How to Exfoliate Your Skin After Using Epilators

In general terms epilation is removal of hair by the roots. Although, the word ‘epilation’ may call up the images of an epilator, small electrical device that is designed to pull out individual hair from the root, waxing, plucking and threading are few other kind of epilation methods.

Epilation is more painful than shaving but tends to last longer. The hair may re-grow after three weeks, but repeated use of an epilator should make the returning hair less coarse and easy to manage.

But before going into the details of how to exfoliate after using epilators let me share with you few quick tips on how to use a epilator correctly. Doing so will help you deal with the ingrown hair problem with ease.

Tips on how to use an epilator

• Take a hot bath or shower in warm water.
• Exfoliate your skin before undergoing any hair removal procedure to get rid of dead, dry skin cells which in turn will lessen the likelihood of clogged pores and ingrown hair problem.
• Dry your skin well, but do not apply any lotions and creams before using the epilator.
• Stretch the area of skin you’re working on so the epilator can pull out the hairs easily.

• Epilate in the natural direction of the hair follicle. When the hair is removed against its natural direction, it is more likely to break and become ingrown.
• Apply cool compresses on the skin after you are done with epilation.

Expect at least minimal amounts of stinging pain as the hair is ripped out of the root and red patches on the skin after an epilator session. These patches will fade overnight, but if you are preparing for a night out, the epilator should be done the night before to give the skin time to recover from the epilator session.

Tip for exfoliation after using epilators

• Look out for a body exfoliator that contains salicylic acid or beta hydroxy acid. These acids help remove the dead skin cells effectively. Make your own salicylic acid exfoliant at home by crushing aspirin and mixing it with a few drops of water to make a paste.

• If you cannot get your hands on the scrub then opt for an over-the-counter salicylic acid lotion. Apply it on your skin to unclog hair follicles.

• You can also use tea tree oil on your skin before and after epilating. Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic that prevents ingrown hairs from forming after the epilation process.

  1. Thanks for the wonderful article! I do epilate my skin and it’s really painful but worth it. Hairs that grow after epilation are much softer and easier to get rid of as compared to the ones that grow after shaving. Thanks for the great tips! Will use them when I epilate next time 🙂

  2. Thanks for this information….I have a query for all the ppl who use epilator….we need to epilate in the opposite direction of hair growth or same? it is really confusing for me….plz ans….
