Threading: How to Thread your Eyebrows at Home

Thread your own eyebrows

Although its true that we trust our beauty parlour, wouldn’t it be magical if we could thread our own eyebrows ? Eyebrows are the most important feature of your face. They make your break your look. Messy eyebrows look untidy and unkempt. Neatly shaped eyebrows makes a face glow, without any makeup. Threading eyebrows is not hard at all, one you get the hang of it. I learnt threading at 22, in just one day, and within a week, I could shape perfect brows.

Interesting Information about Eyebrow Threading

In Arab countries, Eyebrow threading is commonly known as Bande Abru, which translates to ‘eyebrow band.’ Other Arabic words used to describe this procedure include Fatlah or Khite. Both of these words mean threading.
Many celebrities use eyebrow threading over other hair removal methods for the brows because this procedure leaves straight and tidy lines. The brow is essentially better defined through use of this hair removal method, and it is easier to shape the brow with this method.

How to thread your own eyebrows
Part 1 : How to thread
Head out to your local store and buy a cotton thread. Cotton threads work better in pulling hair than normal (sewing) thread. Plus its crazy cheap!! Cotton thread comes at around Rs.30 for 300m , which will last at least about a year if 1 or 2 persons are using.

Hold your hands, palms facing each other at shoulder wide, this is the length of thread you will need. Cut this lengths thread and tie a knot, making a loop. Now twist your right hand in a circular motion, so that the thread twists itself. Twist 8-12 times. Now hold the thread on your point finger and thumb facing outwards, on both hands. Put the twisted area of the thread on your skin. Now choose one hand, say right hand, and touch move your 2 fingers such that the twisted area whisks the hair and pulls it out. This will happen by touching your 2 fingers to each other, and then spreading it apart, and so on. When you use your right hand, the hair removal is in the left direction, and vice versa. Do the upper side first, the upper side defines shape. Do the lower side next, the lower sides defines ‘neatness of the eyebrow’

In parlours, the beautician shapes your eyebrows one by one, but when you are threading your own eyebrows its best to do both eyebrows together, area wise. Divide your eyebrow into 3 sections – A :Inner corner, B: Arch, : Tip. Start with part A. Do both eyes part A, move onto to B on both eyes and then finally C.

The one and only advice that I can give you to learn threading is : Practise. Practise on your legs, one your thighs, on your cheeks (these areas hurt less, when you a rough beginner)

That’s all there is to threading !! It’s a very simple process, but requires a lifetime of perfecting. The hard part about learning to thread your own eyebrows is not threading, its SHAPING your eyebrows.

Part 2 : How to shape
There are various shapes that you can do, choose one that suits your face shape.

Indian faces look best with thick, angular shaped eyebrows.

Do’s And Don’ts of Eyebrow threading-
Do’s-

  • Do wash your face and powder the area before your start threading.
  • Do stretch the skin where you are threading, it will hurt less.
  • Do feel free to thread any hairy areas, cheeks, upper lips, chin, etc.
  • Threading is the best form of hair removal for face, since shaving hurts the skin, and waxing makes the face skin loose.
  • Pluck out stubborn hair with a plucker.
  • Do watch and learn. You can watch videos on youtube, and get a visual.
  • Do use ice or soothing creams or astringent once you are done, it might burn, but that just shows its working.

Don’ts –

  • Don’t jump directly to your eyebrows as a learned. Try the upper lip, chin and cheeks, and get better control of the thread, before your move on to the critical eyebrows.
  • Don’t over practice on the first day itself, the thread might scald your folds on the thumb finger (its an occupational hazard)

Advantages and Disadvantages –

Advantages – Results last long enough, nearly 2- 3 weeks. Its extremely cheap, easy once you learn it, takes 15 – 20 minutes all together. Threading is the healthiest hair removal method, better than waxing, plucking or shaving.

Disadvantages – No method of hair removal comes without disadvantages. Threading can be painful for persons with sensitive skin, but trust me on this one, the result is well worth the redness and the pain.

  5. Alexandra – I tried my best best to explain it, do try it and let us know how it was!

Rati – You mean high like Tyra Banks? Its all about how you shape it, so you might want to try to shape it a bit lower next time.

IK – Tweezing results are okay, Threading results look more natural n tidier.

Deb – Do try it its easy once you learn. For thicker brows, try castor \ coconut \ almond oil ,apply it on your brow every night

  6. Great Smitha….definiately goign to try it…..and the eyebrow chart for different shapes and faces was just so great……

  7. I totally agree, once learned you can do it on your own. I have been threading my eyebrows and upper lips since class 10. Learnt it then… :-))

  8. I know its kinda late to comment on the post….I do my eyebrows occasionally if i cant go to the saloon. But I used to wrap the thread on my fingers. I Could do the right side pretty well but not the left, even got a cut on it. This way sounds much better. I’ll try it for sure. Thanks! :-)) :-))

    1. Never to late to post a comment Meenal. Best thing about knowing how to do your own eyebrows is that you can ‘fix it up’ whenever you want, like suppose they haven’t grown completely but you have an important event – you can clean it up yourself in a few minutes.

This is a very common problem, righties won’t be able to do their left eyebrows properly (and vice versa) unless they are reeeeeally good at threading. Even i can’t do my left eyebrow perfectly, theres always one or 2 hair left or a li’l out of shape. Getting cuts is a side effect of threading 🙁 No way to avoid them, but you can use a surgical tape, just put a small tape on your fingers where you are likely to cut them.

  9. Very Well explained Smita. I do my own upperlips and after finishing my upperlip, there is a small hurt on my thumb or the little finger…which is ok. I try to put some powder on so that it doesnot hurt much.
Little worried about shaping the eyebrows by myself as once i spoiled the shape and was horrible. I will slowly give it a try.
My eyebrow is slightly angled :yelo:
