Top 15 Advices for a Makeup Beginner

Hi everyone,

If you’re new to the world of makeup and beauty, then everything out there (the products, the tools, and the techniques) can seem quite overwhelming. So, how do you make the right start? You obviously can’t buy everything that’s out there nor can you immediately master the various (and endless) makeup techniques you have access to. In this post, I have put together the top 15 tips and pieces of advice that you can follow if you’re a makeup beginner.

1. Invest in fewer, high-quality makeup products:

Instead of buying twelve different shades of lipstick, and five different types of foundation, concealer or mascara, make sure to buy very few but high-end products that you’re sure to get a use out of.

2. Invest in the right tools:

You can’t perfect your makeup game until you have the right tools. Invest in a high-quality makeup sponge and a few other brushes for multitasking. You may also want to invest in a good eyelash curler.
Recommendation: Beauty Blender Makeup Sponge

3. Always start with clean makeup brushes:

Using clean makeup tools every single time can not only help prevent skin infections, but it will help apply your makeup smoothly and evenly.

4. Don’t skip wearing a primer:

porefessional

A primer can make all the difference. Always use a primer underneath your foundation for a smooth, even and long-lasting application. Choose a primer that’s meant for skin type.
Recommendation: Benefit Cosmetics POREfessional Face Primer

5. Always set your makeup:

Remember to set your makeup with a setting powder (loose or pressed) and/or a makeup setting spray for a non-cakey and long-lasting finish.
Recommendation: NYX Professional Makeup Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

6. Less is always more:

Don’t pile on all the makeup that you own on your face. You don’t have to wear foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, eyeliner, blush and lipstick every single day. Highlight only one feature of your face and keep the number of products to a minimum.

7. Fill in your eyebrows:

Your eyebrows frame your face and by filling them in, you can completely transform your makeup look. You should consider filling in your brows even on the days that you are wearing no other makeup—it can make all the difference!
Recommendation: Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz

8. Mascara makes all the difference:

Another game-changing makeup product that’s so easy to throw on is mascara. Even if you’re wearing no other eye makeup, make sure to perk up your lashes with some mascara.
Recommendation: L’Oreal Volume Million Lashes Mascara

9. Use your lipstick as blush:

Multipurpose makeup products are the best. And using your lipstick as a cream blush is the best makeup trick. It looks effortless, color-matched and oh-so-natural.

10. Always start with a clean base:

No matter how little time you have, it’s crucial to apply your makeup on to a clean face. It helps the makeup go on smoothly and last longer.

11. Master the application of a liquid eyeliner:

Afraid of liquid liner? Master its application by first tracing the line with a pencil or shadow and then following it up with a liquid pen eyeliner. You can use sticky notes or tape on the outer corner of your eyes to perfect the winged liner look.

12. Invest in a good eyeshadow palette:

Instead of buying multiple single eyeshadows, you may want to invest in a high-quality eyeshadow palette that can help you create multiple looks.
Recommendation: Urban Decay Naked Palette

13. Lip liner is a makeup must-have:

MAC-Lip-Pencil

Invest in a good quality lip liner to help your lipstick go on smoothly and last longer. It’s the perfect base for your lipstick. Instead of buying multiple lip liners to match every shade of lipstick you own, pick a neutral lip liner that can work with most colors.
Recommendation: MAC Whirl Lip Pencil

14. Don’t be afraid to mix lip colors:

MAC+Ruby+Woo+Lipstick

Don’t have too many lip colors in your stash? Mixing two different lip colors can give you incredible results.
Recommendation: Mix Revlon Black Cherry with MAC Ruby Woo.

15. Experiment with consistencies:

Makeup products to even out skin tone and complexion

If you find your foundation or concealer to be too thick or too matte, add some moisturizer, serum or oil to it. You can also mix a cream lipstick with a matte one and a cream highlighter with a powder one. Mixing products with different consistencies can give you wonderful results.
