Ways to Remove Hair Dye

Our world almost ends when we get the wrong cut or color for our hair, we picture something heavenly and more often than not, our hair dresser does not understand us 😛 Although it’s nearly impossible to remove hair dye there are some methods to lighten it a shade or two so that you can live with it.

Use an anti-dandruff shampoo, which is supposed to be heavy duty and stronger than our regular ones, mix some bakind soda into it, which is a bleaching agent, baking powder will not work, wash your hair often with this until you think it has lightened.

Make a paste out of Vitamin C tablets (I have celin everyday, I hate the chewable ones :/ might as well keep it for this day :P) make a thick paste of crushed Vitamin C tablets and water. Apply the paste to your damp hair and rest an hour before washing out. This does not damage hair and apparently works within few days of hair coloring.

There are color removers in the market that will make your hair get back to the color that it is naturally, then there are some that work slowly and gently, but make sure you research and ask the sales person before buying and read the instructions thoroughly before you use it.

Use a washing powder or clothing detergent. it works within 5 washes, don’t use detergent with bleach or any bleaching agents. Work with small amounts and be careful it does not get anywhere else apart from your hair. Deep condition after this very well.

Cream of tartar is used for cooking when mixed with lemon juice to make a paste works. Massage the paste into your hair so each strand is coated. Wait about 15 minutes then rinse and shampoo and condition, do this often till you think you have happier hair.

Mix four or five drops of dish washing soap and your regular shampoo. Wet your hair and apply the dish soap/shampoo mixture to your hair. Leave for a couple of minutes and rinse and condition, you really need to deep condition with hot oil because this can be very drying.

Use a hot oil on washed hair, the hot oil will strip the color and also deep condition.
Heat a bit of coconut oil with the help of boiling water or a microwave. Wet your hair again, if necessary, and apply the warm oil to both the roots and tips. Wrap a towel and let it sit for an hour. wash, shampoo and condition like usual.

Bleach your hair and then dye it back. This is an extreme method to rip your hair off all color, so keep it as last resort.

Tips:

  • Before you add more color, seek professional help.
  • Even before attempting any of the above, talk to your stylist for any better options.
  • The first 48 hours are crucial to lighten the color.
  • Use hot water to rinse to tone down the color, when trying these methods.

  1. Enjoying the wide range of articles you are putting up Neha! Good work! This is indeed a helpful article….even if not for me! Fortunately for me, Mumma gave me nice brown hair which seem naturally highlighted! The problem was when I streaked them and it was utter mess (as per my hubby)…so I decided never to colour / streak my hair ever again!!

  2. Great article Neha 🙂 , though not for me will try on my mom on days when hair colour does not come out as per expectatations *haan ji*
