Elle 18 lipsticks are so affordable, they give you the option of trying out different shades that you would want to experiment with, without feeling guilty about spending a lot of bucks. Today’s review is about one such super bold and vamp-y kind of shade from the Elle 18 Color Pops Matte lipstick range and it’s named “Berry Dance.”

Packaging: The Elle 18 matte lipstick comes in a cute black packaging with a lovely girl’s face printed over the cap. I am sure you will recognize this standard packaging by Elle 18, but it is quite difficult to pick the shade you want to wear if you have more than one of these in your stash. The cute tube is easy to carry around and shuts with a reassuring click. It is such a fun and girly packaging, but the twist-up mechanism of the bullet isn’t very sturdy. Since this is an affordable lipstick, I can’t really complain.
My Experience with Elle 18 Berry Dance Color Pops Matte Lipstick:
“Berry Dance” is a very dark berry shade, which is a very bold shade. There is an underlying chocolate-y-maroon tint; however, the bullet is totally dark chocolate in color. The shade screams for attention and one would need tonnes of attitude to pull it off. I shy away from such shades, but I saw no harm in checking it out once. The color would suit medium to dark skin tones the best, and might be too tad unbalanced for pale skin. If you are looking for a shade to pull off “gothic makeup,” this is PERFECT! Also, mature ladies would be able to carry this color with greater panache. My mom loved the color, and told me that this kind of a lipstick shade was a runaway hit in the early 90s.
This lipstick is greatly pigmented and in one or two swipes, the full color shows up. Elle 18 markets it as a “matte lipstick,” but it is more of a creamy-matte lipstick. The texture is smooth and glides so easily on the lips. It provides an even application. The finish is not exactly matte – a velvety finish with a light sheen. Like most other Elle 18 lipsticks, it is of a non-drying finish which keeps the lips soft and moisturized for some hours. Layering doesn’t cause any clumping, does not feel heavy on the lips.
This lipstick settles down to a semi-matte finish after 2-3 hours. People with very dry or chapped lips might need a lip balm underneath. The problem with this shade is that it is very unforgiving on dry lips, so prepping your lips is a necessity. Also, you need to be careful with application since you can easily go wrong with this deep and highly pigmented shade.
It doesn’t stay on the lips for as long as other matte lipsticks (like the Lakme 9 to 5 range), but the staying power is decent, around 4-5 hours. After 4 hours, it starts to fade and leaves a stain. Reapplication is needed after 3-4 hours. This shade is difficult to remove and needs a good oil-based remover for the dark stain to come off.

- Transfers a little.
- This shade won’t appeal to everybody.
- Reapplication is required.
- Fades after a meal.
- Colored-coded packaging would be better.
- Stain is difficult to remove.
Would I Repurchase/Recommend Elle 18 Berry Dance Color Pops Matte Lipstick?
If you can pull of this kind of a bold shade, then this is a great lipstick at this price, I won’t repurchase!
