10 Tips to Apply Concealer Properly to Hide Dark Spots

Hi everyone,

If you love full coverage, flawless makeup look, a good concealer is a must have in your stash. Even when we opt for natural makeup, a little concealer to hide the spots brightens up the face without giving you any cakey look. But, the concealer application may go wrong if we are not careful enough. In this post, I will share 10 tips that will help you to apply concealer like a pro.

10 Tips to Apply Concealer Properly to Hide Dark Spots

1. Detect the Spots

You do not need concealer all over the face. People often apply concealer on areas of concern and then end up blending it out all over the face. This will give your face a cracked cakey look. You definitely do not want to do that ever. Try to mark the areas where you will need the concealer. Generally, most women need concealer under the eye and around the mouth. Apart from this, you may need concealer on the blemishes and acne scars. Apply the
concealer over the area of concern and dab it in that area. This way you will set the concealer in the targeted area without dragging it all over the face.

2. Apply Concealer Over Foundation

Do not ever apply the concealer under foundation. When you do that, the foundation actually rubs and removes the concealer from its place. Always apply your foundation first. It covers up the light blemish and spots depending on its coverage power. Then, spot the scars that needs more coverage and apply concealer on that.

3. Choose the Right Concealer Consistency

Choosing the right consistency of concealer is important and it depends on the type of your scar and also your skin type. If you have dry skin, you can use cream concealer. But for oily skin, liquid concealer is a better option. Also, you must keep in mind the type of your acne scar. If the scar is old and flat, you can use a thick, matte product on that. But for raised scars, using lightweight product is much better. Also dry, thick concealer under the eye should be avoided by any mean. That will settle into fine lines and give a horrible finish. Opt for thin light weight product under the eyes to give a flawless finish.

4. Choose the Right Color

Choosing the right color of concealer is as important as your foundation color. The color should match your foundation color or your skin tone. As you apply it over the foundation, the two should blend up well together. For under-eye area or around the lips, you can opt for a shade that is one shade lighter that the foundation. But, do not go for a very light shade as that will make the area look grey.

5. Prep the Skin First

When you are planning to use a concealer, make sure to clean and moisturize the skin. Concealer like all other makeup products sits well on clean skin. Also, concealers tend to make the skin dry. So, moisturize the skin well to blend in the concealer seamlessly and to avoid a dry, caked up finish.

6. Set concealer with Powder

Setting the concealer properly is very important. Using a powder over concealer allows you to seal the deal with perfection. You can use a compact or loose powder or setting powder depending on the type you prefer. You can apply a loose veil of powder all over the face. You can also dab some powder on the concealed spot to set it properly without making the whole face powdery.

7. Concealers are not Correctors

Concealers and correctors are not the same thing at all. While correctors neutralize the shadow that the blemish or spot casts, the concealer hides the spot totally. You cannot use a concealer as a corrector or vice versa. You may skip corrector even when you are doing full glam look, but a concealer is a must. However, often applying concealer under the eye gives a grey effect. For that, use a corrector beneath the foundation first and then apply the concealer on the top of the foundation.

8. Use the Right Tool

Blending concealer with your fingers is not a great idea. You must use a concealing brush with a stiff tip to set the concealer at the targeted area. You can also use the tip of a blending sponge to set the concealer in the desired area. This will help you to get the coverage at the desired spot and giving a flawless finish.

9. Use Bronzer to Bring Back Colors

When you are using a concealer to hide all spots and scars, your face looks too flat. When you are going for a full coverage makeup like that, make sure to use some bronzer to bring back the colors. You may also contour and apply some blush. This will bring back the color to your face and give dimension.

10. Do Not Use Expired Product

We often need the tiniest amount of concealer and thus the product expires even when it is not half finished. But, do not use expired concealer on your face. It will not only affect the skin, but also the consistency changes which reduce its concealing effect. Try to grab refills and smaller versions when you are picking concealer. This will allow you to finish the product before it expires and you get the desired look every time.
