5 Rules To Make Foundation Appear Natural Not Cakey

Hey beauty queens,

We’re all learning slowly in life. Be it in our jobs, our personal life, our fashion sense or our makeup. For a perfect-looking makeup look, we need a perfect base. To perfect the base, our foundation must be flawless; it should be a natural-looking canvas. And, to get the natural-looking foundation, here are 5 simple steps one must follow.

Make Foundation Appear Natural

1. Find the perfect match

choosing the right foundation shade

For a perfect foundation, the colour of your foundation should match perfectly with your face and neck. When shopping for a foundation, swatch the foundation on your wrist for the texture of the foundation and then match the colour to your jawline rather than your wrist or body.

Other than the colour, the texture of the foundation should also match your skin. If your skin is dry, go for a cream based foundation. If your skin is oily, go for a matte finish look. Also, check how long the foundation lasts. If it’s not long-lasting, it can give you the muddy appearance after a certain number of hours. This is a really important factor as it can make or break your overall appearance.

2. Prep your canvas

primer with uv protection

Applying foundation over dry, flaky skin can highlight flaws instead than hiding them. Use a good primer underneath to minimise the appearance of fine lines and pores. Also, use a sunscreen. Remember not to create so many layers – moisturiser, sunscreen, primer and foundation. Find products which can be used as doubles, such as a primer with SPF.

3. Blending tool

Use the right tool to blend your foundation. Some are comfortable with brushes while others use their fingers. Blend well in such a manner that the foundation does not leave your face spotty. If using a sponge, make sure your foundation is not water-based otherwise the sponge will soak the foundation.

4. Choose your coverage

For a natural-looking foundation, use a foundation which provides coverage your skin can handle. For skin with fewer problem areas, use foundations which provide light coverage. For skin with more problems, use high coverage. Blend the foundation well and apply it well on your nose, chin and center of the face, and blend it well.

5. Use concealer and powder in the mix

Use concealer on areas which need more coverage such as under the eyes. Use powder on the t-zone to minimise oil on the skin. Blend everything well to make the look more natural.
