Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Shadow Single Aubergine Review

Today’s review is on an Anastasia Beverly Hills eyeshadow single. I feel so behind times here because while the world is abuzz with the subculture palette, here I am, still talking about the singles! Anyway, I still have a handful of these to review for you. So here goes the detailed review on the shade “Aubergine.”

My Experience with Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Shadow Single Aubergine:

The shadows come individually packaged in a plastic sleeve – like a refill packaging. The same is then enclosed in a cardboard cover which has the product name and ingredients mentioned on it. Apart from that, the name is also mentioned on the flip side of the eyeshadow itself.

I thing the packaging excellent. Not a single of eyeshadow was shattered upon arrival. The metal pans are easy to pop into a magnetic palette – like a Z palette. Alternatively, you can also pick a empty palette from the ABH site.

My Experience with Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Shadow Single Aubergine:

Shade:  “Aubergine” has been described as a “satin deep inky purple” and it’s a medium to deep warm-toned, bruised, plummy purple shade. It isn’t a brightening purple but more of a muddy one because of its warm undertones. If you look very closely, it seems to have a sheen, but honestly, it works pretty much like a matte – both in application and texture. It doesn’t swatch the best but is fairly easy to use on the lid. This is the kind of shade you would use to darken the outer “V” for a pink/purple toned eye look or for a smokey purple look.

Texture: The texture is buttery smooth, though it isn’t dense like the shimmer shades in the line. It does not emphasise texture on the skin. It is very easy to get onto the brush and then transfer onto the lid, but the texture is quite dusty and kicks up product when you touch it with a brush. So, unless you tap the brush before applying, it will result in fall out. The shadow is actually supposed to be satin finish; however, the sheen is visible only when you apply it with fingers and build it up, which actually does not happen in real application because this isn’t the kind of shade you would apply with fingers (unlike say a pressed pigment / metallic shade which can be applied with finger to the centre of your eye to give the halo effect). Applied with brush, it looks and work like a matte shade.

Pigmentation: The shade has decent pigmentation. It does not swatch very well, but when used with a brush – it works fine. It takes very little effort to apply and show up true to pan. With such a shade, it is actually better to not have intense pigmentation since that can be difficult to control for everyone.

Staying Power:  I apply my eyeshadows over a primer because my lids are way too oily. This shade gives me about 8 hours of wear time before showing signs of fading. With a primer, it does not crease on me.

I have shared 2 EOTDs with this shade. In both, I have used this on the outer V to darken it, in order to contour the eye and give it definition. If you look at the “LOOK 1” – you will see how nuanced the shade is. It does not project as a full-on purple or plum.

Pros of Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Shadow Single Aubergine:

  • A medium-deep, warm-toned plummy purple.
  • A good shade to define your pink/purple-based eye looks.
  • Good pigmentation.
  • It does not emphasise the texture of my skin.
  • Decent wear time – with primer – about 8 hours.
  • Buttery smooth texture.

Cons of Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Shadow Single Aubergine:

  • It kicks up a lot of dust which can result in fall out unless the brush is tapped before application of the shade.

IMBB Rating:
4/5

I find this shade very useful because I do like my purples. This may not be the kind of shade one looks for when buying a single because one tends to gravitate towards shimmery bright shades or the constant neutrals. I think this is an interesting shade to play with because it can be an integral part of an existing look or even be used on its own for a twist on the usual brown/black smokey eye look.
