ColourPop Lumiere 2 Ultra Matte Lip Review

Hey lovely ladies,

Today, I have for you the review of a US Drugstore brand which has created quite a noise and a lot of hype. I had wanted to try Colourpop since ages, if nothing else, just to see what the hype was all about. However, it was increasingly difficult to get my hands on it. I placed an order with Colourpop twice, but had to cancel it each time as they just wouldn’t ship on time and the person who was to get them from US, was scheduled to leave before the package could reach them. Finally, I was able to procure a couple of shades, let’s find out how they fared.  In this post, I would be reviewing the shade “Lumiere 2.”

Colourpop does have International shipping option (including India). They charge about $25. However, please note that this may levy customs charges on it, which can vary from 30-43%. Alternatively, you can buy the product from Instagram sellers as well. So, by the time you get it in India, it’s not gonna cost you $6.

My Experience with ColourPop Lumiere 2 Ultra Matte Lip:

Packaging:  This one comes in a lip gloss kind of packaging with silver detailing. The shade name is written at the bottom but since the tube is transparent, it’s fairly easy to make out what colour it is. Unless you have them in a plethora of shades, it comes packaged in the standard Colourpop white outer box.  The applicator is a doe-foot applicator (refer to pics). Makes for easy and precise application.

Color: The shade “Lumiere 2,” is apparently the not-so-distant cousin of Lumiere, which is available in Lippie stix variant. Lumiere “dusty mauve pink in a matte finish” was released by Colourpop in collaboration with Kathleen Lights (youtuber). As per “Kathleen Lights” – it’s a universally flattering shade, I’ll come to that aspect a little later. So, for her Birthday, Colourpop released the liquid version of the same color. Cute story, but let us talk about the color itself. Firstly, Lumiere and Lumiere 2 are definitely not identical. They are in the same color family of dusty mauves, but Lumiere seems more pink while Lumiere 2 has a touch of grey in it. They are both lovely, pretty shades. However, are they universally flattering? Well, that’s debatable; I don’t really think everyone comprehends the full spectrum of skin tones or age demographics when they make such claims.

Anyway! The first time I tried Lumiere 2, I wasn’t very impressed. One – because it didn’t look like Lumiere. Two, it didn’t look like any of the swatches I saw online! The reason for it – the formula is quite different from the other liquid lipstick formulas that I have tried – mainly Armani Maestro, Stila All day wear, Kat Von D Everlasting and the new Chambor liquid lipsticks. The formula is such that the colour looks fairly different post drying and becomes much darker. While, difference in lighting anyway creates a difference in the swatches we see online; whether the picture is taken immediately after application to half and hour or more down, the color is going to change substantially. Immediately post application, the colour looks quite insipid on my lips. It looks like the colour of my pigmented lips – which isn’t too flattering. However, over time, it deepens and becomes a more acceptable deeper mauve which is easier to pull off.

Texture:  Apparently, Colourpop recently changed their formula which ensures that it isn’t too drying on the lips. I can definitely vouch for this. The lipsticks are extremely thin water consistency. The texture is lightweight. It does take time to set. What I noticed was that it had two levels of setting. Post initial application, it dries down. However, it does not become 100% dry. There is about 1-2% – meaning ever so slight – softness/wetness to it. This does not cause much transfer. If you stick your lips together, you will feel the bare hint of tackiness. This aspect kind of ensures that the lipstick is comfortable to wear, even over a prolonged time period, which is a boon for people who shy away from liquid lipsticks cause of their death grip on the lips.

Pigmentation: Pigmentation is fairly good. Despite the colour initially looking like my sad pigmented lips, it went on fairly evenly and covered the pigmentation well. So, what you see is what you get. The pigmentation of the wearer’s lips is not going to change the colour post application.

Lasting Power:  The product lasts about 6-7 hours through light snacks. As is common with long-wearing formulas, oil will break down the product, be it cleansing oil at the end of the day or the oil in your food. You can easily do a touch up, it will not look patchy. You do not need to remove the entire lipstick and reapply. Eating would cause the lipstick to wear down from the inner portion of your lips.

To sum this up for you:

Pros of ColourPop Lumiere 2 Ultra Matte Lip:

  • An interesting shade.
  • Lightweight texture.
  • Decent pigmentation.
  • Easy to apply with the applicator.
  • It applies smoothly and evenly.
  • Decent wear time, 6-7 hours.
  • No feathering or bleeding.
  • Decent packaging.

  • Fairly transfer proof.
  • Does not flake.
  • Does not go patchy with wear time.
  • Not does make your lips look prunish.
  • Not tested on animals.

Cons of ColourPop Lumiere 2 Ultra Matte Lip:

  • Nothing at all.

IMBB Rating:
4.5/5
I am glad I tried this brand, the liquid lipsticks totally live up to the hype around them, especially when you consider the price of $8, it’s an absolute steal. Having said that, for readers in India, this is not gonna cost you $8. It will cost you about INR 750-800 – whether you buy directly from Colourpop or from a re-seller. So, is it worth the price! Most definitely! And that’s what prompted me to try this line. I love my Kat Von Ds but I really wanted to find a cheaper option for my liquid lipstick addiction. So, I tried Chambor considering all the hype around them. Though Chambor has some great products, liquid lipsticks aren’t one of them! I know some people will disagree with me, but I am stating what is my opinion on the product. Yes, they may be among the better options available currently in the India market, but it’s not even a close comparison. I find them going patchy so quickly. Anyway, coming back to these lip colors, even bought at the same price point as Chambor ones, these are a much better option and have such fun colours to work with. I will be reviewing some more soon.
Would I Recommend/Repurchase ColourPop Lumiere 2 Ultra Matte Lip?

  1. i love the shade. it’s fun and unique. although I dont mind the chambor lipsticks. I find them pretty good! 🙂 would absolutely love to try the color pop ones though. you look lovely. 🙂

    1. You should definitely give these a shot Rati! Considering they have such a huge array of shades, i had a tough time narrowing down my list!

  2. I must admit I am the slightest bit dissappointed this shade is not similar to the lumiere lippy stix.. This very much reminds me of Nars dominique but in a liquid lipstick form..

And I must agree we must find a cheaper dupe .. Those KVD lippies are creating a hole in the pocket??

    1. I can see why it reminds you of NARS Dominique. I feel this shade is a bit more wearable than the NARS one coz Dominique has bit more grey in it.

You have no idea…or actually, you do!! Those KVDs are becoming a Bane of my existence. I want them all – and backups of some!! 😉
