I have explored a lot of products from Guerlain – strangely, their Rouge Automatique was one product I skipped each time. Though I was intrigued by the lipstick packaging, yes, its very unique, but something always deterred me from buying one. It might have something to do with a friend of mine telling me they aren’t that great, she refers Rouge Gs to Rouge Automatique. Finally, thanks to IMBB’s generosity, I was able to buy one and test them out for myself. So, did I like this? Or did I agree with my friend? Let’s find out :))
Hydrating long-lasting lip colour. Automatically irresistible. Automatically Fashionable. As Coveted as an It-bag. As Precious as a gem. As Glamorous as stilettos. Rouge Automatique is the moisturising and long-lasting “it lipstick”. It combines the radiance of a crystal pigment, the luminosity of colours and a fine, sensual texture. It glides over the lips like a second skin. Smoothed, moisturised lips are adorned with pure, luminous and deliciously sheer colours. Rouge Automatique comes in a bouquet of 25 absolutely modern, playful pop shades. As a homage to the history of Guerlain fragrances, each shade bears the name of a cult creation of the house. Inspired by the legendary Rouge Automatique from 1936, it is nestled in a jewel case, a golden sheath that closes with one flick.
The light, delicate scent of a vanilla “floriental” leaves its incomparable mark on Rouge Automatique. Top notes sparkle with a lemon, orange and bergamot accord. The rose and iris heart exudes sweetness. The vanilla and tonka bean dry-down gives Rouge Automatique all of its intensity.
Apply directly to the lips daily or for a more sophisticated look, apply using a brush after outlining the lip contour with the Guerlain Lip Liner.

Packaging of this lipstick is extremely eye-catching and is the reason its called an “Automatique.” The golden square bullet has no cap, no twist-up mechanism. It’s a golden square knob which needs to be slid down for the lipstick to appear out of the bullet. Easy to operate with one hand – a dream for a women carrying an infant on her hip!! Okay, maybe that was not the picture they wanted to create. They probably wanted you to hold your party clutch with one hand while you apply lipstick with the other. But, here I am, being my practical self!Refer pics for the design! Unlike Rouge Gs, this is not heavy and easy to carry around. The bullet has the number and a colour indicator at the bottom for easy identification of the shade. It comes packaged in a black cardboard box, just as all other Guerlain products.
My Experience with Guerlain Rouge Automatique Lipstick – 121 Rouge d’enfer:
Color: The website describes the colour as “Strawberry Red” – which is apt. The red does have a bit of pink in it, makes it more easily wearable, but I do feel the colour to be fairly neutral red which will show differently as per the skin tone of the person. It will lean warmer on darker skin tones and cooler on lighter ones. It adds a beautiful pop of colour to the face and isn’t garish or loud.
Texture: The texture is lightweight and extremely creamy though not so creamy that would make lines on your lips when they are pursed together. The lipstick is extremely smooth and hydrating. The hydration lasts beyond its wear time. The formula is very comfortable to wear. Once I tried the lipstick the whole day, it took just one touch up and I felt my lips to be soft and hydrated even the next day.
Pigmentation: It is extremelypigmented, about 80-85% colour deposit in a single swipe and easy to build up to the colour in the tube in 1.5-2 swipes. The colour is opaque in the first swipe itself and hides lip pigmentation.
Lasting Power: The product lasts good 7 hours on me, post which if I do a touch-up, I’m good to go for another 7 hours. The touch up comes off smooth and does not feel patchy at all. What surprised me was that the lipstick transferred easily, so I had lipstick on my cutlery and cup (post dining); however, when I checked the mirror (assuming my lipstick would have vanished, instead it was still there. The transference happened but lipstick still seemed intact, loved that! It leaves a nice pinkish red stain, which lasts for another couple of hours.
