Harmful Effects of Using Nail Polish
Why painting your nails too much is ruining them – Things to watch out for!
If you are like me, you absolutely love painting your nails and enjoy while you are at it. But is painting nails too much? Does it have a negative effect on our dear beloved nails? I think yes!
Overload on Acetone: Painting your nails very often means, making use of a LOT of nail polish remover. Nail polish removers are extremely bad for our pretty nails, they contain acetone. Acetone is known for being poisonous, remember your mothers saying “do not paint your nails in a closed room?” Yeah they said it for a reason. More than that, acetone has an extremely drying effect on the nails, making them very brittle in the process resulting in breakage.
Skipping Base Coat: Guilty of making this mistake on mostly all occasions whilst I paint my nails. But skipping your base coat is highly disadvantageous to your nails. This wonder transparent coat of polish simply prevents your nails from turning to that vile shade of yellow because of all that nail paints we expose our nails to.
Picking on your nails varnish: Okay, you have your nail paint all applied and your nails are looking super pretty for the first few days and then it chips. Adding more fuel to the fire, you start picking on those chipped edges. Sure it is a great way to stop yourself from getting bored (sarcasm intended), but on a serious note, what you are actually doing is picking on the top nail cells of your nail beds. Resulting in breakage, brittleness, chipping and ugly white patches.
Gel Nails and Acrylic Nails: If you are a big fan of these nail treatments, beware is all I shall say. Sure they make the top of your nails look gorgeous. But what about the underneath? These popular treatments and let’s not forget expensive ones dry out your nail beds and make your nails highly weak! Don’t think you want that for your nails, do you now?
Now, I don’t say stop painting your nails for the rest of your lives. Just take extra precautions and pamper your nails because they need to be healthy to look pretty with your nail paint on. Here are a few quick tips that might help you in keeping those nails healthy.
1. Keep your nails short, this avoids infection and breakage.
2. Always apply a base coat.
3. Use good quality nail paints free from toluene and formaldehyde.
4. Keep your nails au natural for a week and keep giving them breaks from nail polishes in between.
5. Treat your nails to some pampering, apply some cuticle treatment oils – Jessica has some really good options.
Hope these tips help you ladies, and you all are proud owners of healthy, shiny nails.

this post was much needed as i have just begun using nail paints 😀
Yay!
Ouch! thanks Rasshi
Always welcome Neha 🙂
Nice post. 🙂 I already follow few of these but will try to do all. But I have a question. I do not apply base coat as such but doesn’t the base coat contain similar chemicals as the normal nail paint?
Thanks Madhur!
Yes they do, but as compared to the pigmented nail colours you’re directly exposing your nails to these are better off- also good quality base coats contain vitamin e oils and other essential products that will do good to your nails. I would suggest use a nail strengthener as a base coat!
Thank you for replying back. I use Inglot and Bourjois nail paints. Going to look for their base coat too. 🙂
Thats no problem at all 🙂 Yeah, Opi has nice ones too, I have reviewed one of their nail strengtheners.
Very useful post. Will try to follow all these points.Pls suggest some Gud basecoat available in India.
Thanks Neha :), why not try purchasing one from OPI? I know they do a good range, also they have nail strengtheners, which are great too. Sally Hansen is good too!
Very useful post Rasshi! With so many pretty nail paints out there in the market, it is hard to resist ourselves from using them. But like you said, we just need to be cautious from the next time around…
Thank you Nandini 🙂 Agreed, we just have to be cautious and our nails are happy too.
