How To Care For Your Lips in Winters

Guess what? Chapped lips are the first sign of winter. You protect yourself from the cold and dry wind by layering yourself. You moisturize the body and the lips, but they are so exposed to the cold and dry winds. The lips only have thin layers of skin, so they are more prone to drying out than the rest of the body. In fact one may lose up to 10 times more moisture from the lips as compared to the rest of the body. Dry cold air, air-conditioning, and low humidity these make the lips dehydrated. Licking the lips to keep them moisturized makes the situation worse. Evaporation of the saliva further dehydrates the lips. Peeling and biting of lip can cause bleeding.  This irritates the skin on the lips and slows the healing process.

Looking after your lips:

Exfoliation helps to remove the top most dry skin layer and reveals the soft skin beneath it.  Some of the exfoliation methods are mentioned here. But make sure that the lips are not already chapped or it will cause them to bleed. Skip exfoliation if your lips are chapped.

Overnight treatment of chapped lips:

A very simple overnight treatment but works like a miracle on your chapped lips. It needs only two ingredients which are easily available in our pantry.

1. Coconut oil:
2. Honey:

Take a teaspoon of coconut oil and mix in a teaspoon of honey to it. Do not heat the oil. It will melt due to body heat. Mix it thoroughly so that the two ingredients are completely blended. Apply this mixture just before retiring to bed. You will be surprised by the results in the morning. Soft, smooth and supple – perfectly kissable lips. Keep the mixture in the fridge and use it till your lips are completely healed.

Cucumber for hydration:  Another method to cure cracked lips is to use the cucumber. Cut a cucumber into thin slices. Place the slices all over the lips. Let the lips absorb the moisture from the cucumber for about 15 minutes.  This method definitely hydrates the lips.

If you have a burning sensation on the lips, this is a perfect cure. Make a cold salt water compress by mixing one teaspoon of salt into 500 ml of water. Soak in a cloth in this mixture. Put it on the lips for at least 5 minutes. Tap them dry. Apply a generous coat of lip balm or Vaseline to seal in the moisture. You can also use the above mentioned coconut oil and honey mixture for faster healing of the lips.

Lip balms: Use a lip balm with sunscreen to prevent sun burn on the lips and stop licking that pretty pout!
