I am a matte lipstick lover and the collection I have consists mostly of matte lipsticks or liquid lipsticks. When the Kat Von D collection was launched some time ago, the world of beauty was taken by a storm and the reviews were really mixed and mostly negative. This made me stay away from the range and the brand, but last week, during our anniversary, I was gifted one from the above-mentioned range and the shade is called “Lovecraft,” which is a matte pinky mauve shade, which looks different under different light conditions. This particular shade looks like my MLBB shade, but a bit darker than my lips.

What it is:
An innovative lipstick that coats lips with bold color, long-lasting wear, and luxe comfort.
What it does: Drench your lips with bold color and unstoppable femininity. Designed to look as rock ‘n roll as its wearer, this revolutionary, hybrid lipstick is formulated with Color Cushion Technology™, which combines lasting-wear, one-swipe payoff, and velvet-touch comfort. This color-true lipstick leaves lips supple, and its wide color spectrum offers stunning shades, including red for every skin tone, statement-making colors, and classic, everyday neutrals. What it is formulated without parabens, sulfates, phthalates. Kat Von D’s Studded Kiss Lipstick is infused with vitamins A, C, and E, an antioxidant complex that leaves lips feeling soft, and the Crème Brûlée scent provides a subtle, sweet experience when you apply it. Designed by Kat to resemble one of her favorite bracelets, the black, monochromatic casing is uniquely studded.
Vitamins A, C, and E: Powerful antioxidant complex that keeps lips supple.
The lipstick has an attention-grabbing packaging like a studded case which seems to be the creator’s signature style, who was a tattoo artist (I am sorry for my lack of knowledge about her).
My Experience with Kat Von D Lovecraft Studded Kiss Lipstick:
Well, when gifts are given, they have a lot of thoughts attached to them and telling them that you don’t like it might hurt their feelings, so I keep all my gifts with a lot of love even if I don’t like them. The same was the case with this lipstick as the reviews and trial at the store never made me get one for myself, but anyway, I have one now. The packaging is nice, but not something that had blown me off my feet.
Talking about the application, it’s dry and tugs on the lips. I have horribly dry lips all year round and it gets bad to worse during the winter. Though I have used a lot of matte lipsticks and loved most of them, this one is a different story altogether. The hand swatches as you can see look more pinkish in tone and on my lips, it looks more mauve. It makes me look much older than my age :’( The lipstick looks more pink under artificial light and more mauve in natural light ….what is this??
Now comes the texture and application part, as I have mentioned before, it is dry and that means “dry.” The texture is more of a waxy feel and doesn’t feel comfortable on my lips. I have used the MAC Retro lipsticks, but they might be dry, but no way do they feel waxy. The Lime Crime lip colors were much more comfortable than this. I was surprised to see lipstick marks on my juice glass as I did not have anything oily prior to that and a matte lipstick like this transferring like that was an epic fail. It made my lips look smaller and lifeless.
The application is not even and does not cover lips in one coat, so that’s another negative. I am sorry to say I failed to fall in love with this product and I can understand the rants of various bloggers.
The maker “Kat Von D” had tried various publicity stunts like naming the products in an offensive language, which was the talk of the town for some time, but all that counts and matters is a good product at the end of the day, period!
Pros of Kat Von D Lovecraft Studded Kiss Lipstick:
- Nice color.
Cons of Kat Von D Lovecraft Studded Kiss Lipstick:
- Feels super dry and waxy.
- Loads of chemicals.
- Does not live up to expectations.
- Settles into fine lines.
- Multiple coats needed to cover lips as it feels patchy in the first application.
1/5, just for the shade and packaging.
Would I Recommend Kat Von D Lovecraft Studded Kiss Lipstick?
No, I would not recommend these lipsticks as these are epic fails, there are awesome matte lipsticks all over and MAC seems to be the best bet.
