MAC Pro Longwear Lip Creme in Soft Sell Review

Writing reviews for beauty products isn’t an easy job. Reflecting on why one loves or loathes a product may come easily to people; it surely comes easily to me. But that’s just one facet of a review. I have liked reading beauty and fashion blogs for a while, but I never fully appreciated all the effort that goes into writing, editing, photographing and sharing until now. So, kudos to y’all! As for me, as challenging as I find this to be (especially the photography part), IMBB keeps pulling me back because of all the support and love that goes around here! So here I am, today, sharing my experience with MAC’s Soft Sell lipstick. I hope you enjoy it and find it useful.

MAC Pro Longwear Lip Creme in Soft Sell Review

Product Background and Description:

Soft Sell is part of MAC’s Pro Longwear Lip Creme line.  According to MAC, this lip creme has a “lightweight texture, creamy finish and comfortable longwear.” And is “slick in use, applies without need of a top coat and still lasts up to 12 hours. Won’t feather or transfer, and the colour stays true. Helps lips stay soft and hydrated.” These lipsticks promise long lasting color, without any feathering or drying of the lips.

MAC describes this shade as a neutral pink with pearl. The packaging, just like all MAC products, is sleek and black. However, unlike the usual “bullet style” MAC lipstick tubes, this lip creme comes in a cylinder-shaped, flat top tube. This lip creme also offers slightly more product than the regular MAC lipstick (the former contains 3.6g, the latter 3 gm).

Price:

Rs. 1450, according to the last review on IMBB; $18 at MAC counters in the U.S.; I paid $13 for this at a Cosmetics Company Outlet store.

My Experience with MAC Pro Longwear Lip Creme in Soft Sell:

I realized, some time ago, that I had a lot of fun, bright lipsticks, but no colors that were more neutral and conservative and could be worn for academic events and interviews. Soft Sell was one of the first colors I picked to add to my “conservative lip colors” collection. The color looked really pretty and sophisticated in the tube and I was equally pleased with it once I swatched it on the back of my hand (I rarely try on testers at the store). I decided to get it. However, to my surprise, the way the color looks in the tube and on my hand is completely different from the way it looks on my lips. In the tube and the swatches, the color appears to be more brick-reddish and far from a “neutral pink.” Nonetheless, on my lips, the color shows up as a pretty, opaque, matte pink with a hint of shimmer. I’m still scratching my head over this, it makes no sense!

Soft Sell 3

I didn’t get 12-hours of wear from this lip creme, as MAC had promised, however, it did last a good 5-6 hours on me, which still is pretty impressive. Unlike other long-wearing lipsticks, this isn’t drying. In fact, it goes on pretty smooth even if I don’t wear lip balm under it and provides constant hydration to the lips.

Soft Sell 4

I love that it has a little bit of shimmer in it, which pretty much eliminates the need to wear a gloss on the top. While my lips feel soft with this on, I feel like the color settles into the lines of my lips and makes them look very prominent. I’m still finding a way to rectify this effect!

Pros of MAC Pro Longwear Lip Creme in Soft Sell:

  • Longwearing. For a lipstick, this lasts pretty long. I think it lives up to its name pretty well.
  • Non-drying. The lip creme is creamy and hydrating and glides on even without a lip balm.
  • Opaque color. The color payoff is great. You just need 1-2 swipes to get full coverage.
  • Subtle shimmer.  The “pearl” in the formula offers just the right amount of shimmer. It makes the lips look pretty, without the disco-ball effect!
  • Doesn’t transfer.  Eat and drink on with this on, the color stays on the lips and doesn’t get on glasses, food etc.

Cons of MAC Pro Longwear Lip Creme in Soft Sell:

  • Tricky shade.  Seriously what’s going on with that? I thought I bought a completely different lipstick. Even weirder is the swatch they have up on the website for this shade!
  • Settles into the lines on my lip. I’m going to try applying this with a primer and lip brush to see if this can be fixed. It’s a slight nuisance, but not something that will keep me from repurchasing this lip creme.

Bottom Line:

Get this formula if you’re looking for a long-lasting lip color that offers good coverage and pretty shades. Get Soft Sell if you’re looking for a color that looks pretty and works well for everyday college /office wear.

    1. Thanks, Rama! You know, I ache to wear corals to classes and meetings, but I’m afraid I won’t be taken seriously :\ , this indeed is perfect for those occasions!

    1. Hey Mithu! I got this from an outlet shop called the Cosmetics Company Store (CCO) located inside a Saks 5th Avenue Department Store outlet. So, the way makeup companies have counters in big department stores, CCO has counters inside Saks 5th outlets and sells a range of products (everything from Estee Lauder to Clinique).
