Nails: Remedies for Nail Discoloration

After the discoloration of fingernails article, it was obvious that a cure and prevention article was coming, but then I realized that there are actually a lot of us who need these cures and preventions.

So here I am, with some instant home remedies to get rid of stained and discolored fingernails.

Toothpaste: Apply some toothpaste on your discolored nails and brush them with a tooth brush. But ensure that the bristles of the toothbrush are not too harsh and brittle. Do this for twice or thrice a day and your discolored nails will certainly get back to normal.

Mouthwash

The Listerine mouthwash in particular has great curative powers. Take a warm water bowl, and add around one fourth of the bottle of Listerine in it, and soak you fingers in it for about 20 minutes. You can use any mouth wash you have handy.

Lemon Juice

Citrus fruits are great for stain removal, so just take a lemon, cut it and apply it on your nails. You can use cotton to apply lemon juice on the nails, or simply rub lemon on the nails. Or squeeze in a lemon in a bowl and dip your nails in it.

Vinegar

Pour some clear vinegar in a bowl, you can use the one you use for cooking or apple cider one, and soak your nails in it. You can also dilute vinegar and lemon juice and soak your nails in it. 🙂

Baking soda

nail discolorationMix a tablespoon of baking soda in equivalent quantity of lemon juice and apply it on your nails. Buff this off. Wash and moisture your hands after this.
Mix approximately three tablespoons of baking soda with one table spoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Apply this paste on to your nails. Wash after about 10 minutes and moisturize.

Denture Tablets

Denture tablets whiten fingernails too. Dissolve these tablets in water and soak your fingernails in it for about 10 to 15 minutes.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil won’t just brighten up your nails, but it will also moisten your cuticles. Pour some lemon essential oil in a bowl and soak your nails in it. Keep them soaked for some time and then you can wash them or simply massage in the remaining oil, keep it on for sometime and then wash of with a mild handwash and moisturize it.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil may take around two to three months for brightening you nails, but its all worth the time. Massage your fingernails with 2 drops barely of the oil twice a day.
You can amalgamate butenafine hydrochloride (Easily available in a medical shop) and tea tree oil and massage the solution onto your nails. T his will give your nails a bright look, a bit quicker than only tea tree oil.
Mix tea tree oil with lavender oil and massage the duo into your nails for bright nails. You can do this as many times as you wish to.

Honey

Honey shall kill the possibilities of any growing or nurturing fungal growth which may also affect your nail’s color. Thus preventing nail discoloration.

Light buffing

nail discolorationLight buffing is another way of brightening up fingernails. This not just removes stains and lightens the yellow shade from the nails, but also encourages the growth of the nail as it escalates blood circulation. Remember to buff in one direction only with a good quality buffer since extra buffing and wrong buffing can have ill effects on the nails.

Whitening pencils

There are many whitening pencils available in the market, which can be used for whitening the fingernail tips. These are the easiest, quick, handy and affordable alternative for fingernail whitening.

Base nail polish

Nail polishes are the culprits for yellow nails mostly. Hence a base coat must be used for preventing yellow nails. You can have a clear base coat too, since this will give a protective layer between the nail and the polish. Base nail coats give you healthier and thicker nails, and absolutely prevent staining of nails and yellowness.

Vicks, or any medicated vapor rub

The Vicks you use for bad throat and cold, can cure your discolored nails too. Apply and massage your nails with it twice a day. The smell may irritate you for sometime, but then you can wash it off, and the results you will get are just amazing. 🙂

Avoid formaldehyde

Check the contents of the nail products you use, this compound causes mail discoloration so avoid it to the fullest.

Chlorinated water

Once you get in the pool or any such formulated water place, make sure that you bathe, formulated water can cause nail discoloration too.

Onion peel

Rub an onion peel on your nails regularly; you can do this while cooking too. This will make your nails whiter and curb all possibilities of fungal growth too.

Alcohol

Alcohol abuse causes nail discoloration too, but the same alcohol can treat your nails too. Soak your nails in alcohol for around 10 to 15 minutes and wash them thoroughly. DO not forget to moisturize.

Olive oil

Simply massaging your nails with olive oil is great for your nails too, but then mixing olive oil with oregano oil and massaging the dilution into your nails is simply great for discolored nails.

Salty water

The water of the sea or simple water mixed with lots of salt helps you in getting rid of discolored nails. Simply soak your nails in salty water and scrub them of gently with a brush to have bright nails.
