Smashbox Melondrama Be Legendary Lip Gloss Review

I hope you are all ready for this review today because I am going back to my lovely lip gloss addiction! I do not know why but I just can’t give up on my love for lip glosses no matter how hard I try and I just seem to keep collecting them faster than I use them. I definitely have more lip glosses than I have lipsticks and I just find their versatility so dependable. If your love for lip glosses is like mine then stick around because I have a lovely product for you and I even have a drugstore dupe for it as well!

Product Description:

This Smashbox lip gloss comes in a long rectangular clear plastic packaging with a black screw top cap. The wand is white and the applicator holds the product at the end. I also love that the Smashbox website allows you to select up to 12 different skin tones to see what a shade will look like on that skin tone. It also allows you to chose a replenishment service if you buy from their own website.

Price: USD 20 for 6 ml or .20 fl oz of product. I consider this to be an expensive lip product because I always compare everything with the price of a simple MAC lipstick.

My Experience with Smashbox Melondrama Be Legendary Lip Gloss:

I bought this product on an absolute whim because I needed to spend $18 more to qualify for an amazing free gift so I had no idea what Smashbox lip glosses were like when I picked this up. I snatched this up so quickly that I kind of wish I had picked a better colour or even a different product because even though this has proved to be a good product, it is nothing phenomenal or so out of this world.

Packaging: I am not a fan of such square shaped and bulky lip glosses because they are not sleek. When I am at an evening function I do not like to carry purses and I like round and slim lip glosses that I can either give my husband to keep in his pocket for me or I hide them. There is no where I can stuff this lip gloss in my sari or lehenga without injuring myself plus this size gets bulky for a lip gloss too!

Colour: The name itself (Melondrama) suggests that this will be a melony orange coloured lip gloss and it does look so in the tube. It is described by Smashbox as a coral colour with shimmer but I think the colour coral usually has more of pink tones to it than this does. I would describe this is as a shimmery orange in the tube but the effect it has on the lips does not look as pigmented as in the tube. On my lips it is not opaque orange with a translucent effect and shimmer.

Applicator: I like when applicator wands are white in colour so that you can clearly see the excess product on it which can be used with a lip brush or your fingers. This applicator wand holds enough product when you pull it out for one full application so no double dipping is necessary. It is also very stiff and does not move or bend against pressure from the lips so I like that you can squeeze the entire product off it.

Consistency: This lip gloss is pretty lightweight when you apply it. I think it is the consistency which makes the application look very sheer. It is not overly sticky but it is a lip gloss so there is some relative stickiness but nothing gooey that would stick to flyaways. Again your lips will feel very breathable with this on. It does transfer onto cups and glasses but I think every girl knows nothing will touch her lips once she’s applied or touched up her lip gloss!

Staying power: Again, it is a lip gloss so it is not going to last forever. You will need to reapply in 3 to 4 hours after your first application or earlier if you are eating and drinking. If you leave it be, it stays pretty well and fades away leaving the shimmer on.

Performance: This lip gloss does not dry out my lips and it is relatively moisturizing. It does not settle into fine lines and does not bleed. The shimmer is very fine, photographs really well and looks pretty good in person too; nothing overwhelming at all. There is no funny smell to this product and even though its performance is pretty good for a lip gloss I am not in love with this maybe because it is such a simple and common colour.

Dupe: A cheaper drugstore dupe for this product is Maybelline Color Elixir Color Sensational in 525 Glistening Coral which I have reviewed on IMBB earlier.

This lip gloss photographs differently on different cameras in the same light so I have tried to get a variation in my lip swatches for you guys!

Pros of the Smashbox Melondrama Be Legendary Lip Gloss:

• Very fine shimmer.
• No funky smells.
• Stays on for a decent few hours.
• Does not bleed or settle in fine lines of lips.
• Moisturizing.
• Does not accentuate dry lips.
• Fades well.
• Firm applicator.
• Applicator holds plenty of product.

Cons of the Smashbox Melondrama Be Legendary Lip Gloss:

• For its performance, it is expensive.
• Boring colour unless melon/orange/coral colour is your favourite.
• Bulky packaging.

Would I Repurchase Smashbox Melondrama Be Legendary Lip Gloss?
No I will never repurchase such a shade regardless of its performance.

Would I Recommend Smashbox Melondrama Be Legendary Lip Gloss?
Not with enthusiasm. If this is your favourite shade go for it, if not, get the dupe because that is an equally powerful performer for much less. Yeah this is a good lip gloss but this colour for me is just average.
