Why use a Silicone Free Shampoo?

Why Silicone Free Shampoo?

Hey ladies, I recently made a lot of researches on silicon in shampoos. At first I actually wanted to find out why after dying my hair the color was gone within weeks. That’s when I read about silicon in shampoos sort of creates a coating on the hair which doesn’t let hair day stay on the hair at all. It will keep washing out in a short time.

Silicone Names, Types, Disadvantages And Advantages
When I looked at the shampoos that I have I didn’t see the word ‘’silicone’’ In the ingredients. Of course I wouldn’t find that word because the companies don’t want you to find out this easily. Most of their names end with a ‘’cone’’ or ‘’ane’’ such as ‘’Dimethicone’’ or ‘’ Amodimethicone’’.
There are 2 different types of silicones. One silicone type is water soluble and the other one is NOT water soluble. This research helped me find out a lot about what the silicones really do.

We all want shiny and soft hair that is detangled and healthy looking. You can achieve this with either chemicals or without chemicals. The silicone is known to create an amazingly healthy look to your hair making it very shiny and frizz free. For a while at least. What actually happens the silicone creates a coat on the hair preventing any hair treatments to work and preventing hair dye from staying on the hair BUT your hair just feels so good and looks healthy. After a few days or weeks you may notice that your curly hair starts to look weight down and dull.

The advantages of silicone in your hair are the shiny look, frizz free hair and the smooth feeling you get when you wash your hair.

The disadvantages are quite overwhelming. Everytime you wash your hair with a shampoo that has silicone the coating of the silicone on your hair will build up and make it harder to get it out of your hair. Silicones can also lead to hair loss, extremely dry and itchy scalp and cancer. As I mentioned the dying your hair will be useless because it is going to fade very quickly, any hair treatment that will help your hair such as oils won’t work at all because the silicone is sealing up the hair.

Names of silicones
– Dimethicone = not water soluble, helps detangle frizzy hair and create shine
– Cyclomethicone = not water soluble, hardest to remove from hair, creates shine may be also called Cyclopentasiloxane
– Amodimethicone = not water soluble, help detangling the hair
– Dimethiconol = not water soluble
– Phenyl Trimethicone = not water soluble, silicone-oil, helps dry hair look healthy
– Simethicone = not water soluble
– Cyclopentasiloxane = not water soluble, silicone-oil that will help the hair feel soft
– Trimethylsiloxyilicates = not water soluble, hard to remove
– Dimethicone copolyol = water soluble
– Lauryl methicone copolyol = water soluble
– Polysiloxane = water soluble

How to get the silicone out of your hair:
It is not going to happen overnight. It will take a few weeks (4-6) for the silicone to be completely out of your hair. If you need it to be out of your hair faster you can buy a clarifying shampoo which is going to be harsh on your hair but getting out the silicones. I suggest buying a silicone free shampoo which Garnier and L’Oreal or The Body Shop carry.

What will change?
I have heard that women that switched to a silicone-and sulfate free shampoo noticed that the hair looked very dry and dull at first. It was also very tangled and hard to coam through. After a while when the hair gets used to the shampoo the hair started to have a lot of volume and never looked better. You have to remember that it is almost as you are detoxing your hair from all the nasty silicone.

My experience with silicone free and silicone shampoos:
I have had beautiful curly hair. The ends of my hair were really dry and I had to get at least 4 inches cut off but I wanted healthy hair. Once that happened I slowly noticed that my hair looked straighter everyday. I was like o.O what happened to my curls? I thought to myself that maybe the damaged ends of my hair somehow made me have curly hair which is bizarre because I was born with curly hair lol. When I made this research I immediately knew that the silicone totally messed up my hair texture. I am hoping I get my beautiful curly hair back very soon. Thank you reading this long article but I hope you learned a little bit about silicones and since you ladies love my pictures I thought I share some with you and to show you how the silicone made my hair look after a few months ☹ take care xoxo

From this to….

Ughh..no curls..no volume…never use sunscreen if you know you are going to take pictures . 🙂

    1. the body shop has a few, garnier has one that i have seen its in a red see through bottle, all natur (vegan) shampooos are most likley silicone and sulfat free, nivea mostly doesnt contain silicone. the one brand that contains the most silicones are John Friedas which i have been using for the past 2 months 🙁 :scream:

  10. i bought silicone free shampoo lately and when i used it(with lots of expectations), suddenly my thick-wavy (quite manageable) hair got rough and tangle-prone.. i was so shocked and cursed myself for not being happy with what i have and tossed d shampoo away just after 2 use..!! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: now i know why.. patience is what i require now.!! :headbang:

    1. yes the hair has to get used to the anti-silicone shampoo 🙂 if you have a big problem with your hair being tangled you can buy a silicone free conditioner.

I never knew silicones caused this much trouble… as a kid I never used anything except Shikakai and other such herbs…but then moved on! Now somehow that feels so hassle-free! Atleast you don’t have to peel your eyes for all those harmful ingredients!!!
But really, this article just reiterates why IMBB is such an important part of our lives! Thanks to the likes of you, Rati, Jomol, Nupur et al who make us all that much more aware of what we buy! :teddy: :teddy: :teddy:

  14. Thank you for the useful article, Sahar! :woot: :woot: I’m also using a silicon free shampoo these days, L’Occitane’s Olive Tree shampoo. I’m using it like the world’s worst miser though considering it’s excellent but expensive. :silly: :silly: Are all TBS shampoos silicon free?

  16. sahar, u r gorgeous….
almost all beauty products seem loaded with chemicals…….it would be greatly helpful if someone can write an article on ‘good’ brands of shampoo, lipstick, etc etc so that lazy ppl like me can go and directly buy……..

    1. i may do a list of silicone and sulfate free shampoos and conditioners 🙂 and thank you for your nice words 😀

      1. hi Sahar

Waiting for your next article eagerly on- sulfate and silicone free shampoos . Also clarify that in herbal brands like Nyle & ayur etc. they do not have silicon but Sulphate is still present in that. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

again confused b/w them :chewnails: :chewnails:

  17. OMG….now I know why my curlzzzz vanished toooo 😥 😥 😥 😥 😥 I so loved them….will try to get rid of these “Cones” to have them back!! Thanks for the info Sahar :puchhi:

  18. you look so fabulous Sahar 🙂 and your son is so cute 🙂
even these days I’m very careful. I’m getting everything from whole foods. all organic.

  19. sahar , you look goorrrgoeus girll.. :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot: and your baby :-* :-* thanks for sharing this article. I also am quite careful with selecting shampoos. :))

  20. Thank you so much for this wonderful article Sahar. I now realise for few minutes of shine, we are losing the quality of hair. I am suffering from bad splits ends, guess this could be the reason :spank: :spank: .. Now I am switching to Khadi’s Reetha shampoo, after I read the review here at IMBB.
Sahar, you are so very b’ful and so is your son.. :snicker: :snicker: :snicker:
And for silky hair, we can always use the raw, either yellow or white part, its a great conditioner as as good for your hair… :pigtail: :pigtail: :pigtail:

      1. you are welcome and thank you for the kind words. i used to mix a whole egg with olive oil together and massage into my hair and scalp and leave it there for 1-2 hours and wash it out that indeed helped my hair but now that i think about it it neevr really made a huge difference and the reason to that is that the silcone obvioulsy didnt let the protein and vitamins from the egg and olive oil get to my hair 🙁 :waaa:

  21. Sahar… Thanks for such an informative article… thats your baby..cho cutee :teddy: :teddy: .. me too had such curls and I totally lost them .. :(( :((

and you look so stunning hun :puchhi: :puchhi: hope you get those curls back

    1. if you use it once a week or once every two weeks you should be fine because the silicone will go away in time 🙂

  24. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: omg..i dont know how much i have tortured my hair unknowingly… but loved the article sahar.. an eye opening article..
waise… sahar, when ur son will grow up,, his friends will surely stick around u… sexy aunty… 😆 😆 😆 😆 and ur eye makeup looks awesome in the last pic…

  25. thank you Sahar for the fantastic post…. I too swear by the silicon free shampoos! I have been using TBS shampoo and the improvement is such that I can even skip the conditioner now :)) I have my hair back !!! But one thing I fail to understand is that even the so called herbal brands add silicone to their products… First they add these cones and increase the price and when they make them silicon free they further increase the price….!!! I mean I don’t understand the math here… Even the good old hello shampoo now comes contaminated with silicones!!
Beautiful pics and ur son is a cutie pie…!

    1. woow. yes i dont understand that either. maybe they want to make people think that the more you pay the better the quality?

  26. I’ve heard V-Care has launched shikakai paste.. V-Care is a popular trichology center in South India.. Btw, is anybody using it? How is the result?

  27. ur son is so damn cute Sahar :puchhi:
u luk very pretty too 🙂
n xctly wat happns to my hair 🙁 even I have curls bt dey lay flat and hair acts crazy on day 1 of shampoo
i will definitely switch to silicone free shampoos thank u

  28. Awww so pretty !! I looove ur style !
    A very useful article…..I didn’t know what Silicone actually does… Thanks a lot !!
Looking forward to your future posts!!!!
Time to buy a new shampoo! 😐

  29. Very informative article, Sahar! 🙂
But I don’t agree with what you said about silicones making curls disappear. I used to use silicones before, and my hair was as curly as ever. Possibly because my hair is very curly? I dunno.

  30. Hi Sahar,

I’m afraid I’m a bit confused by your article and pictures.

Did your voluminous curly hair eventually return after using silicone-free shampoo?

The way I’m understanding the pictures is that the silicone shampoos gave you body and the non-silicone made it go flat. Or did you experiment and go from non-silicone to silicone just to see what would happen?

Sorry confusion, just need some clarification.

    Thank you!
