What it does:
This award-winning foundation is formulated with micro-fil technology, producing a low-density product that pairs high-impact pigments with weightless texture. Inspired by the silk shantung worn by kings and emperors, this foundation glides seamlessly onto the skin leaving a finish that’s reminiscent of charmeuse silk.

What else you need to know:
“These products are directly inspired by the way I choose fabrics for my collections. They allow the natural glow of the skin to come through no matter how many layers you apply.”—Giorgio Armani, Fashion Designer
“Quite simply, the best foundation there is.”—Linda Cantello, International Makeup Artist
Application techniques:
Apply with the unique blender brush for a radiant, air-brushed finish.

My Experience with Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation Shade 5 :

This is one of those foundations which is raved about like crazy by beauty bloggers and has won numerous awards; the latest one being 2013 InStyle Best beauty buy. Hence, I had to try this out and bring the amazing readers of IMBB, my take on this hyped product and whether it is worth your hard earned cash.

Packaging:
It comes in a frosted glass bottle with wait for it … A pump!! One of my biggest pet peeve is when foundations don’t come with a pump. No matter how much I like a particular foundation if it doesn’t come with a pump I will think twice about repurchasing it. The pump disperses just the right amount. 1 pump is all I need to cover my full face.

Consistency:
This foundation is on the thinner side but it is not watery. The thin texture makes spreading and blending very easy and it does blend with a natural skin-like appearance and a lightweight feeling.

Finish:
This foundation gives a semi-matte look and truly as suggested, by the name a luminous look to the skin. It is in no way dewy or shiny looking on the face. It gives a very natural luminous glow from within to the skin without it seeming at all like I have very much product on it. It truly enhances skin rather than covering it up.

Coverage:
The coverage is medium but it is easily build-able. I can apply one layer on my skin (blended with my trusted beauty blender) and I find it covers most of my skin flaws like redness and uneven skin tone. For places, where I do need heavier coverage like on my post-acne scars, I do need to build up another layer on that particular area with about half a pump and it does not look piled on or cakey.

Shade:
This foundation comes in shade numbers rather than names which might be a bit tricky. I have the shade 5 which does match my skin tone (for reference I am a MAC NW23) It does have a neutral undertone which is too yellow nor too pink.
I do have very dry skin overall with areas of my chin and underye oily. I did find that it accentuated and stuck to my dry patches hence I do have to make sure my face was properly moisturized before using this. It did settle a little bit into my pores but did not accentuate them horribly and I find I can avoid this issue by using a good primer underneath.

On areas where I do turn oily I do have to set this foundation with a light dusting of powder but that does tend to take away some of the luminosity of the foundation hence if you do have to set I would recommend staying away from highly mattifing powders; instead go for something with has a light reflecting quality to it. I use my Charlotte Tilbury Skin Perfecting Micro powder with it.

Now let me tell you the best and the biggest selling point of this foundation for me. It photographs absolutely beautifully. Skin looks absolutely flawless and with a heavenly glow without looking even a little bit shiny.

Since it does not contain SPF, it makes it ideal for flash photography but not so much for day time wear.

Staying Power:
It does stay looking fresh for 6-7 hours. My oily areas do need slight touch-up during the day; but on the areas of my face which are dry it stays matte and grease-free all day long. It does not crease.

Overall, I am really loving this foundation. I love the silky texture, lightweight feel and the fact that it looks ohhsoo beautiful in photographs (much more beautiful than in real life).

I do not love the fact that it is so pricey and also I would not recommend this product for people with very oily skin who do need to set their makeup with heavy duty powder since powder tends to take away the luminosity of this foundation away, which is the best part of the product.

For the record, the L’Oreal True Match lumi foundation is supposed to be a drugstore dupe for this product. I have not used that foundation hence I cannot compare but I know tons of beauty bloggers who support this opinion.
I will recommend this product.

  1. Neha brilliant review.I think it got so hyped that I cringed at buying it myself. Totally convinced that I made a mistake by not picking it up! 😀 The packaging and the texture looks sooo gorgeous!!! :))

  2. This is my favourite at the moment, Neha and you’re right about it photographing beautifully.
LumiMagique does not hold a candle to this by any stretch of the imagination. Plus, GA is oil-free, LO isn’t.
