Herbal Essences Body Wash in Body Burst Review

There are many perks of being a beauty junkie. You get to try and array of new products and look darn good doing it! The downside, of course, is that you’re never ever satisfied with any amount of products you have. I can’t walk into a drug or department store without taking a beauty product home with me. For those of us living in the states, free samples are a great way to justify these purchases (hey, you get to try a lotion and a perfume when buying a lipstick). And as for drugstores, most products are a steal anyway.  I will be reviewing one such “steal” today, Herbal Essences’ Body Wash in Body Burst. Yup, the much loved hair care company now has a line of body washes. To see how this one performs, read on!

Here’s what the brand says about this body wash: “Your favorite Herbal Essences scents, now a body wash. Indulge in an exhilarating shower experience. Invigorating bursts of citrus essences. And enjoy irresistible, long-lasting fragrance.”

My Experience with Herbal Essences Body Wash in Body Burst:

As I was sauntering through the beauty product aisles at Wal-Mart at the end of a long work day, something bright, big and orange caught my eye. Feeling energized by the sight of a new beauty product, I quickly walked over to the shelf and grabbed the bottle. “Herbal Essences makes body washes?” was my first thought. Followed by, “it must smell great!” One whiff of the of the body wash later, it made its place in my shopping cart and about 25 minutes later in my shower. Herbal Essences is known for three things – their innuendo-loaded ads (check out YouTube!) and their clever names for products and amazing product fragrances.

With this product, however, Herbal Essences missed the mark. While a whiff of the product was certainly citrusy and energizing, it smells entirely different in the shower. The smell is mildly citrusy, very sweet and frankly borderline cloying. It smells like a cheap orange candy, that has way too much sugar and too little citrus flavor. I don’t find the smell “exhilarating,” as the description states and it doesn’t make me feel more awake in the mornings. The fragrance is definitely long lasting and fills up my bathroom, hallway and bedroom with the smell and leaves everything smelling like candy.

What works for this gel is that it isn’t drying. It’s not a creamy gel and I wasn’t expecting it to be moisturizing. The fact that it doesn’t dry my skin out was a pleasant surprise, since a lot of “clear” shower gels I have used in the past leave my skin thirsty for some moisture. It lathers up pretty well and rinses off without leaving any dirt or residue behind. You’re getting a lot of value for your money with this product – it’s a huge bottle for $5 bucks and at that price point cheaper than a lot other drugstore shower gels like Olay and Dove. But it isn’t really as good as any of the brands I just mentioned. This might work for people who are looking for a basic body wash for the summer, but it’s not for me. Overall, it’s pretty average.

I decided to fill this in my hand-soap dispenser and use it as a hand wash. I can tolerate the smell in small doses and it doesn’t dry my hands out like the previous hand wash I was using. I still want to try out the other Herbal Essences body wash fragrances, but this one just isn’t for me. If you’re not too bothered by overly sweet smells and are looking for a basic body wash, give this a shot. Otherwise, it’s just not for you!

• Sweet, artificial cloying smell.
• Contains sulfates.
