Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo Lipstick Futurist, Idealist Review

Hello Gorgeous,

I hope you checked out my earlier review on the Pat McGrath LuxeTrance lipstick in the shade “Beautiful Creature”. Today, I am back with some Hourglass reviews from their Girl Lip Stylo range. When I reviewed the Hourglass Femme N*de shades in N*de no. 1, N*de No. 2 and N*de No.3, I had mentioned how well the n*de range had done and that prompted Hourglass to release the Lip Stylos in a horde of other shades. When the new shades were released, these again had a handful of n*des in them. Today’s review is on two of these shades. So, let us get on with it!

My Experience with Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo Lipstick Futurist, Idealist:

Packaging: The lipstick comes packaged in the usual Hourglass brown cardboard packaging which is very elegant. The lipstick itself has a chubby pencil type of design, while the dispense mechanism is regular twist up and not something you need to sharpen. The lipstick tube is again the typical Hourglass brown with gold detailing. It looks quite stunning and classy. And, the tube has decent weight, which helps in driving home the whole luxe theme. If you had more than one of these, you wouldn’t be able to differentiate colours, except for the sticker at the bottom. For once, the font size is big enough for you to be able to read without squinting.

Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo Lipstick Futurist, Idealist Review Outer Cover

The lipstick is shaped like a pencil and not like a traditional bullet. While it is still new, it is easy to apply. Being creamy, it isn’t likely to retain the shape. Later, how easy it will be to apply – especially around the outer corners of the lips. The way you can manage this for some extra time is that apply the lipstick to your lip outline with the pointed end of the lipstick, but fill in the rest of the lips with the side of the lipstick. This will ensure that the tip remains pointy for longer.

The one con – and, for me, a big one at that – is the fact that the lipstick doesn’t slide in fully once twisted down. Like the tip of a pencil, the tip of the lipstick stays exposed. And when I say “the tip” – it isn’t a bit – it’s a substantial amount. Yes, there is a cap to ensure hygiene, etc., but since the lipstick doesn’t twist fully down, you have to be extra cautious while removing the cap or re-capping it. One would think that is no big deal, but in daily use, it is a pain to be constantly careful while handling it – what if you nick it while opening or closing the cap? And, one of my lipsticks did come with the top portion totally nicked off because, someone who didn’t know better tried opening the product. Thankfully, I was able to replace it. But, what if you yourself end up doing this. This is extremely irritating.

Shade:
Futurist: Described by the company as a “Mauve nude”. Futurist, when swatched, looks like a soft, light, dirty pink shade with light brown undertones and a glossy sheen. However, when applied on my naturally pigmented lips, it is pretty much the colour of my lips. I cannot say that it is flattering because, it does not cover my naturally dark lip line.

The pigmentation is semi-opaque and even with my attempts to build it up, I could not get to an opaque coverage. Personally, it is a shade I find difficult to work with. It is more likely to suit someone with fair to light skin tone. I could use it as a wash of colour like a lip balm does, but in that scenario, it is a waste of money for me. The lipstick has a buttery smooth texture that glides easily and has substantial slip.

Idealist: Described by the company as a “honey nude”. Idealist, when swatched, is a soft, light peachy brown shade with warm caramel undertones and a glossy sheen. On the lips, this again is pretty much a n*de shade with just a hint of peach. Definitely, more workable than the shade futurist, but not my ideal N*de shade.

This shade too is semi-opaque, but is ever so slightly more buildable that the shade Futurist. In terms of texture, they both are pretty much at par with buttery smoothness, which easily glides onto the lips and imparts even pigmentation. This too had substantial slip.

Texture: The texture is smooth, buttery, and yet, it doesn’t sink into the fine lines of the lips. It may bunch up a little when you press your lips together. But, I realized that this was happening because I was overloading my lips with product in an attempt to make the colour look opaque. This did not help. What would help for people with naturally pigmented lips is to use a lip liner (or maybe concealer – although that is personally not favored by me) to counter the lip pigmentation. You can even use a considerably drier lip liner like MAC, and get away with it because, once these are layered on top, your lips will remain hydrated anyway. The lipstick is hydrating and has this amazing polished lustrous finish. The blend of shea moisture, jojoba, mimosa and sunflower seeds really nourish the lips. It actually makes your lips look plumper.

Lasting Power: Considering the shades and how emollient the product is, it gives only a couple of hours of wear. You will need to re-apply every 2.5-3 hours. There is no stain with these (atleast not to the naked eye!!) 😉

Fragrance: There is a slight fragrance which is not an additive. The fragrance comes from the plethora of seed oils in the product. Do ensure you check this when you buy a lipstick from this range as a couple of my shades had a more pronounced smell. This could be the result of slightly older stock. Do note, this line is fairly new, so it isn’t like the stock is very old. But, the seed oils can start turning depending on how/where these are stored.

IMBB Rating:
Futurist– 3.5/5
Idealist– 3.5/5

I love the formula since it is a boon in this weather and allows my lips to look and feel well hydrated. These are not my kind of n*des. The good thing is that the line does have a couple of n*de shades, which will work better on the medium skin tone. I will share those with you soon.
