Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo Lipstick Dreamer, Seeker Review

Hey Gorgeous Girls,

I am so enjoying this range from Hourglass. They make for quite a change, after using liquid lipsticks almost exclusively for close to 2 years. 2016 was my obsession with Kat Von D’s Everlasting liquid lipstick range and then, 2017 seemed all about Lime Crime Velvetines. Looks like 2018 is all about Hourglass! So, let us find out about the shade “Dreamer” and “Seeker” from the Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo range.

My Experience with Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo Lipstick Dreamer, Seeker:

Packaging: The lipstick comes in the usual Hourglass brown cardboard packaging which looks very elegant. The lipstick itself has a chubby pencil type of design, while the dispense mechanism is regular twist up and not something you need to sharpen. The lipstick tube is again the typical Hourglass brown with gold detailing. It looks quite stunning and classy. And, the tube has decent weight which helps in driving home the whole luxe theme. If you had more than one of these, you wouldn’t be able to differentiate colours except for the sticker at the bottom. For once, the font size is big enough for you to be able to read without squinting.

The lipstick is shaped like a pencil and not like a traditional bullet. While it is still new, it is easy to apply. Being creamy, it isn’t likely to retain the shape. Later, let us see how easy it will be to apply, especially around the outer corners of the lips.

The one con – and, for me, a big one at that – is that the lipstick doesn’t slide in fully once twisted down. Like the tip of a pencil, the tip of the lipstick stays exposed. And, when I say “the tip”, it isn’t a bit, it’s a substantial amount. Yes, there is a cap to ensure hygiene, etc., but, since the lipstick doesn’t twist fully down, you have to be extra cautious while removing the cap or re-capping it. One would think that it is not a big deal, but in daily use, it is a pain to be constantly careful while handling it – what if you nick it while opening or closing the cap? And, one of my lipsticks did come with the top portion totally nicked off – because, someone who didn’t know better tried opening the product. Thankfully, I was able to replace it. But, what if you yourself end up doing this. This is extremely irritating.

Dreamer:
Described by the company as a “Peachy pink”, Dreamer is a light to medium soft peachy pink shade with a soft glossy sheen – appropriately described by the company. On its own, in a swatch, it looks fairly pink – maybe, a little warm pink. But when applied onto the lips, the peach really comes through. It is a slightly pastel peach, but not unbecoming full on pastel shade.

The texture is creamy – creamier than the shade “Creator” (which was quite balmy), but maybe not as creamy as the shade “Seeker”. The pigmentation is semi-opaque but easily buildable. It manages to cover my lip pigmentation. However, as the colour settles, my natural, darker lip line does peep through slightly. I do understand that this is a challenge personal to me and not an issue with the product itself. But, I am sharing this with you, in case you too face similar issue with lip pigmentation. The bright side is that this can be easily countered with a neutral lip liner. The other thing with this shade is that if your lips have dry patches, the colour will get caught at this patches and the application will look patchy and uneven. The pastel-ness of the shade will draw attention to the patches. Despite having a hydrating formula, this shade is not able to even out the application. Also, considering the texture, I guess it doesn’t come as a surprise that it transfers easily. However, the good part is that it does not sink into the lip lines, but building up the colour too much can lead it to collect in the lip corners.

The texture is lightweight and quite hydrating which is perfect for these winter months. The blend of shea moisture, jojoba, mimosa and sunflower seed makes your lips look plumper, more hydrated and nourished. It wears off evenly and it does not look patchy. The lipstick gives me about 3.5-4 hours of wear time. It does not stain the lips at all.

Seeker:
Described by the company as a “Pinky rose”. It is a medium, warm, everyday bright (happy) pink shade with a lovely soft satiny sheen. This is the shade, which will be easy to pull off by a multitude of skin tones, considering that it is quite an everyday shade but still flattering. It is the kind of shade, which one can slap on at any time of the day/night and it will work. Also, it would be perfect for office – assuming you aren’t into full on n*de shades. It has a creamy, lightweight texture with an almost opaque pigmentation, which can be evened out and made fully opaque with a second swipe. It covers all natural lip pigmentation and applies evenly.

The blend of shea moisture, jojoba, mimosa and sunflower seed makes your lips look plumper, more hydrated and plump. However, the texture being creamy tends to transfer onto any surface that it touches. It wears off evenly and does not look patchy. The lipstick gives me about 4-4.5 hours wear time. It does not leave any stain on the lips.

Texture: The formula is definitely hydrating and buildable. The texture is very lightweight and moisturizing. The lips look plumped up and youthful. It fills in the lines on the lips and makea them look more hydrated and plump. If you like a soft colour on your lips for everyday wear, this fits the bill. The shades can be built up.

For someone like me, who loves the hydrating and plumping effect these have but still needs a bit of definition and longevity, I feel the formula benefits from a lip liner. A lip liner helps it give a defined outline, ensures the product does not smudge outside the line post meals, gives a bit of longevity and covers pigmentation as well.

Fragrance: There is no added fragrance. The slight fragrance that it does have is the natural smell of the seed oils in the product. Do ensure that you check this fragrance when you buy a lipstick from this range, as a couple of my shades had a more pronounced smell. This could be the result of slightly older stock. Do note, this line is fairly new, so it isn’t like the stock is very old. But, the seed oils can start turning depending on how/where these are stored.

Do I Recommend Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo Lipstick Dreamer, Seeker?
I think, between the two shades I discussed today, “Seeker” is what I would recommend. It is an easy to wear shade and has good pigmentation and a lovely texture. “Dreamer”, though a pretty shade, I think the balance of texture and pigmentation needs a little more from the user than just slapping it on. It needs properly prepped lips for sure and some may need a lip liner too. I do look forward to trying more from this line.
