Kanebo Media Shiny Essence Lip A Lipstick in RS-05 Review

Kanebo Media Shiny Essence Lip A in RS-05 used to be my favourite lipstick when I first came to Japan. This is my second lipstick bullet – same shade, same line. I was absolutely blown away by how natural this colour is. But, as I started learning more about makeup, I changed my mind. Let’s see why!

My Experience with Kanebo Media Shiny Essence Lip A Lipstick in RS-05:

Packaging: The lipstick comes in a slim, cylindrical lipstick tube that has silver body. The body makes it easier to apply the product because it is so thin. The cap clicks open and shut. The top of the cap has a unique pattern.

Shade: The range has 14 different shades to choose from, but my this particular one’s shade is RS-05 (RS stand for rose). From beigy shades to oranges, pinks, rose and reds, the collection is pretty, but not very wide enough for people who want brighter or unusual shades. This shade is pinky-rose colour. It has a very nice, shiny finish as the name suggests, so a lip gloss is not exactly needed with this shade.

Texture and Finish: This product is very comfortable to wear as it feels very light on the lips. I would not say it is creamy, but it has more of a lip balm texture. It is shiny and shimmery. I find this lipstick very moisturising, so you don’t really need a lip balm underneath (I find this true with most of the Japanese drugstore lipsticks).

Staying Power: This product isn’t great in the staying power department. It rubs off quite easily. Especially if you are eating or drinking, it goes away completely. But, the positive part is that it doesn’t leave any awkward lipstick lines when it disappears. Silver linings, I guess! But, if I don’t eat or drink, it lasts about 2-3 hours on me. But I recommend using a lip liner underneath to prolong the wear time.

Scent/Taste: This lipstick is unscented and does not taste weird. In fact, it tastes like nothing at all. So, it won’t bother you when you are having your meal or drink. All of their lip products are unscented and this is something I like about the company.

Pigmentation: Pigmentation is very low to average. Since this shade is on the sheer side, you can wear it without the help of a mirror and it works out just fine.

Spreadability: This lipstick spreads out very nicely and coats the lips well, but you have to go over the lips and get a few layers on for it to show up. I am not sure about how the reds perform, though (red lipsticks generally have more pigmentation). It has a few specks of shimmer running through it, which is more visible when it has rubbed off. It does not settle into fine lines and leaves the lips shiny and glowy.

Swatch:

Tip: If you are unsure of applying any lip product without a mirror (even bright lipsticks), just put the lipstick on the inside of the lips on the top and bottom, then keep pressing and sandwiching your lips together. This will disperse the product in a sheer way and also will make sure it does not go out of your lip lines!
