MAC Studio Fix Lash Mascara in “Black Fix” Review

MAC Studio Fix Lash Mascara in “Black Fix”.

The studio fix lash “Black fix” mascara was released as part of the Prêt-à-Papier collection from MAC. Since this had received rave reviews, I wanted to see what the hype was all about.

Does it really live up to the hype? Read on to see that.

What’s the Prêt-à-Papier collection all about?

This is what MAC has to say: Craft-paper couture – an inspired idea cut like a pattern and whipped up into a seamless spectrum of parchment-to-vellum beiges with an occasional, clever colour spill, coral among the most au courant. Avec Prêt-à-Papier, a new couture star is born!

About Studio fix lash from the MAC site:

Innovative, mousse-like formula gives superior definition, volume and lift by filling in sparse lashes for a dramatic effect. New moulded brush prevents clumping. Rich in pigments. Long-wearing polymers quickly coat from root to tip. Keeps lashes light, lifted, supple, and full. No clumping

Shades available: Black fix and Studio Brown. Although there are 2 shades, only Black fix was released as part of the Prêt-à-Papier collection.

Price: US $13 / INR 900

My two cents on this: Although MAC mascaras are pretty much affordable compared to their other products, I’ve always felt that MAC lacks a lot behind in the mascara department. That said, I still love the other products though 🙂 . Volume is one of my top priorities when it comes to choosing a mascara, and then comes length. And MAC says this gives both. Really? Let’s see that. Personally, when it comes to mascaras I prefer Maybelline and L’Oreal. They perform wonderfully without burning a hole in your pocket. But then, out of all the mascara’s that MAC has actually come up with so far this one is the best.

Packaging: It’s the standard MAC packaging. Nothing to be really exciting about. The usual boring black case with MAC engraved on it.

This is how the mascara brush looks.

MAC Studio Fix lash Mascara The formula is actually mousse- like according to MAC. To me, it looks richly pigmented. It’s “REALLY” black in my opinion.

The very first look at the brush gave me the feeling that this is not going to clump as much. And yeah, I was right. It doesn’t clump that much.

What about length? Yes, definitely lengthens my lashes a lot.

Curl? Hmmm…yeah whatever  🙁

Volume? Not that much. Quite achievable with about 2 coats or so. I don’t mind 2-3 coats since I do that with most mascaras anyways, thanks to my super sparse lashes. But don’t expect something as much as 5 or 6 times volume.

Does it feather you may think. Nope. Does not. Maybe the mousses like formula? Probably.

I have never experienced smudging or feathering with this mascara ever.

It feels really light on my lashes. Does not weigh them down at all. The look is still fresh at the end of the day. In fact, the “rich black” colour is retained too. Does not fade or anything. Good nah? Also does a good job in separating my lashes. Me likey . 🙂 MAC Studio Fix lash Mascara on eyes The first pic is my naked lashes without any mascara. Then with one coat, 2, 3 coats and so on.

What I like about this mascara:

  • Really black pigments
  • Does not weigh my lashes
  • Lengthens really well, volumizes (to an extent) and separates without clumping.
  • Keeps lashes soft
  • No smudging or feathering.

What I dislike about this mascara:

  • The price tag. Cheap for something from MAC, but a little too much for an everyday mascara. I tend to change my mascara every 3 months or so. Because of that I see no point in buying costly mascaras.
  • Not waterproof .

Will I re-purchase? Maybe. Not sure. Not a bad mascara. Although you won’t achieve va va voom volume, it still gives you decent volume and super length .This is definitely a lengthening mascara in my opinion, volume comes second .If length is your top priority, this is definitely worth trying at least once. If you are looking for extra volume and curl I would say skip.

Am pretty sure Maybelline and L’Oreal can do the same thing for a cheaper price. But what the hell? This Is Make up Art Cosmetics we are talking about right?

So, my search for the perfect mascara still continues. (Actually happy 🙂 since there are so many new mascaras out there that I haven’t tried yet).

What about you? Have you found your perfect mascara match?

Have u tried this? What are your favourite mascaras?

Share your thoughts.

PS: Prêt-à-Papier collection would be launching in India in a month or so. 🙂

  2. I agree on what you mentioned about MAC not being an expert at making mascaras. I have zoom lash mascara, it nice, gives me dramatic lashes and all goody good but I couldn’t fall in love with it. Generally I like most products from MAC but I guess Mascaras are not MAC’s forte. 🙂

  3. which is the best mascara tell me someone plssssssssss …. 😥 hv’nt found one good mascara till nw… the lashes clump or there r blotches of mascara on my lashes… :-(( ….. hey Appu u a mallu???

    1. Here are a few I have tried :

Maybelline Volumn’ express turbo boost – REAL volume

Loreal Volmunious Carbon Black – REALLY black but smudges like a bitch 🙂

Maybelline Define a lash – LENGTH and separation, not much volume

Maybelline Collossal volume espress – Think thats already reviewed on IMBB.

      MAC

      Hope that helps.

And no, I am from Chennai…I understand malayalam though 🙂 Can’t speak fluently 🙂

          1. Appu, I never had any “lash fall” (lol!) with any Estee Lauder Mascara. I have tried 3 from their brand and this is my fav so far. 🙂 Thank God, this one is from their permanent line. 🙂

  4. I have to try the Estee Lauder Sumptuous Bold Mascara. I have to, I have to, I have to…. 😉 :cute: :giggle:  ………… pitna hai kya pakka trykarungi heheheh :kissblow:

    1. Rashmi, initially i was like yeah that’s an okay kind of mascara but it just grew on me slowly and my lashes have never looked so awesome (sorry for the lack of modesty :rotfl: ) . I love it completely. And if you are not from India, you might even get a sample to try. 🙂

    1. Yea…everyone seems to be liking Coco Chanel…Saw the ad Rati…very classy right? Inspiring to makeup maniacs like us 🙂

    1. Thanks Neha 🙂 I have never tried cover girl lash blast inspite of reading so much about it online…high time 🙂

  5. Even I don’t like investing much on mascaras that would last for a max of 6 months.. I got a Dior one and forgot that I had that 🙁 After few months when I found, it was completely dried out.. So now I am with the Maybelline Colossal Volume and I like it 🙂

    1. ya…true aarthi…and colossal volume is really good…as I told u, maybelline and L’oreal good mascaras themselves 🙂

  6. Loreal Volmunious Carbon Black waterproof one. Great all day long , thick
lashes but very difficult to remove but with a good makeup remover for eyes you’re done 😀
I use Avon’s Moisture Effective Eye Makeup Remover Lotion ( well the older version) but is the same thing 😀

    1. Hi Fadeela,

I’ve never tried the waterproof one in voluminous black. Just the ordinary one. Its really black, but smudges a lot for me…but thank god it washes off with water 🙂

    1. Hi Sheshines,

I’ve tried the false lash mascara in waterproof once. I found it to be really making my lashes “stiff”. is there a normal one? And removing it was also a bit of a pain…Good to know it worked for u 🙂 I used it for abt a month or so and then left it…L’oreal really rocks in the mascara dept 🙂
