Make Up For Ever – HD Brush 25N

You may have heard this saying that a good brush can make an okay product work well, whereas a bad brush/tool cannot make even a great product work. I totally agree and abide by this. I see a lot of people being adventourous towards makeup or willing to buy a high end lippy or eyeliner – but not comfortable shelling the same money for a good brush. The lippy you might use once in a week, but the brush you will end up using every day…and still…

And I have not come across anyone personally, who feels adventourous towards brushes – as in willing to try different shapes and types – experimenting with what works better with what foundation, etc. The same foundation can look patchy when applied with a wrong brush and can look flawless when applied with the right one!

And one perception I will change – once I am through with my brush reviews is that MAC is the ultimate authority on brushes. Yes, MAC does provide good brushes – I own a few of these – but MAC is by no means, be all and end all of Makup or brushes….there is such a wide world to explore here.

PRODUCT (from the website):

What it is:
A nylon-bristle brush for applying liquid foundation.

What it does:
HD Brush #25N’s medium-size, smooth bristles distribute the perfect amount of product to leave the skin looking completely flawless. Its unique size and shape are ideal for quickly and precisely covering large areas.

HD Brush #25N is the perfect tool for applying HD Invisible Cover Foundation.

My experience with Make Up For Ever – HD Brush 25N

Size: The brush has a medium stout wooden handle. Its not long handled like MAC eye brushes but not as smalll as a MAC SE brush or Shiseido foundation brush (reviewed earlier). Refer pics.

Bristles: Nylon

Bristle shape: Flat, densely packed, tapered bristles

Coverage: Provides light to medium coverage

The brush head consists of tightly packed artificial bristles which are soft to touch but do not have much give. Meaning, the feel of the bristles is soft. However, they are not pliant or don’t bend to soft touch. They resist bending, which ensures a smooth, streak free application of foundation.

Background and Experience: I was lucky that my first ever high end brushes were Make Up For Ever – in essence, they spoiled me for other brands. When I started my quest for brushes, the first foundation brush I searched for was a standard paddle brush for applying foundation. I bought a 35N, a 20N and then this 25N (refer pics for size). Its a great brush, though not used much by me coz of the other 2 brushes in my stash (which I will review subsequently) and my stippling brushes.

When I was buying these brushes, I was initially unaware how much of a difference the quality of bristles can make on the application. Since the bristles are packed tightly together, don’t have much give and the size is convenient, what you get is a streakless apllication. So, I was extremely lucky not to have grown through the rigorous trial and errors when it came to searching for a good paddle brush. When you have used this high end a product and got flawless results, you need not become aware fo the duds out there.

Though I love my stippling foundation brushes more than the paddle brush – are they truly interchangeable? In my opinion….NO! Like I said earlier, different foundations work well with different brushes. The paddle brush works better with more sheer, runny foundations. They will not work as well with creamy, thicker foundations.

One rule of thumb you follow while applying foundation with the paddle brush is that your strokes need to be downward and never upward, against your hair flow. Yes, everyone has some fuzzy hair on their face – no matter how much more or less, how pale – its there. If the movement of brush is upwards, you will end up going against the hair flow and raise them – making them prominent and making your foundation application streaky.

To sum this up for you:

Pros of Make Up For Ever – HD Brush 25N:

1. No shedding – at all!
2. Soft bristles
3. Sturdy brush
4. Synthetic bristles – nylon – easy to maintain
5. Short handle gives more control over the application and portability for travel
6. Gently tapered head allows bristles to reach all facial contours.

8. Easy to clean
9. Little time to dry post cleaning

Cons of Make Up For Ever – HD Brush 25N

1. MUFE products are not easily available in India – only Sephora in Saket.

IMBB Rating:

Yes, a 5/5 product.

Its an absolutely fabulous paddle brush – works well for applying streak free foundation. While travelling, can double up for application of concealer as well.

My recommendation to you –try the same foundation with different tools – including fingers. You never know what makes an okay foundation into a HG product – it might just be the brush you used!!!

    1. Good quality brushes do come with a hefty price tag Arzoo…but if you take care of them, they last you for decades. My experience with MUFE brushes – Not a single hair shed out – there will be cost attached to such quality.

    1. *hihi* *hihi* I try a lot of stuff Megha – but I do come across duds as well – they aren’t as much fun to share (review)!! So you see me talking about winners rather than duds!
