I have been hunting for a primer for a long time now so I decided to try Make up for ever HD primer. I could have tried MAC primer as well but since I have had zero bad experience with Make Up for Ever products in past, I decided to go with their HD primer.

After using this realized how much difference a primer can make to your makeup.

To tell you a little about my skin type, I have a normal to dry skin.I don’t have any redness on my skin nor do I have any problem of big pores. So I was looking for a primer that is more like a moisturizer for my skin as opposed to pure silica primer that would mattify my skin.

  • It’s an oil free primer so I do moisturise my skin before applying it because this primer moisturizes only the upper layers of the skin. I have tried using with without a moisturizer, my skin started feeling uncomfortable. But if you have oily skin, you don’t have to moisturize your skin prior to applying it. The texture of the HD primer is like a moisturiser only. So you pump out a primer on your finger tips and apply it directly on your face.
  • I have it in shade 5, which is supposed to add radiance to fair skin and minimize redness. I don’t have any redness on my face so I can’t say much on that front but it doesn’t add any radiance to my face. I kind of mattifies my face and gives a velvetty smooth texture to skin. :inlove:
  • It does minimize the appearance of my (small) pores and gives a smooth look to my face.
  • Even after 6-8 hours, my foundation looks fresh and my makeup looks intact.  HD primer came as a pleasant surprize to me. My blush and foundation did stay longer than the usual. :inlove:
  • I don’t think that my foundations look better or worse with this as a base but it does help my makeup last longer and makes it look fresh longer than the usual.
  • It didn’t break me out.
  • It barely takes seconds to dry up so I don’t have to waste my time between applying primer and foundation.
  • It didn’t make my face oily.
  • It comes with a pump dispenser so it’s easier to control the amount of product. I apply it directly with my finger tips so there is no wastage of product.

  • A little goes a long way. I just need one full pump for all over my face.
  • Because of this I am wearing less liquid foundation these days. I just apply the primer on my face, apply cream blush on cheeks and set everything with powder . I am good to go.
  • Make up for Ever HD Primer come in 7 variants so you can choose the one for your skin concern. Check out the 7 variants of the HD Primer HERE

This is after I have blended the HD primer. My skin looked smoother and even after I applied it. I wonder if you can make a difference.. ?:-)

Make Up For Ever HD Primer is not silica free and if you apply more of it, it makes your face look pasty.

  1. I love the MUFE primer, they deliver what they promise.
Did you try the HD foundation? There are several beauties I know with similiar skin type as you described using it regulary.

      1. It is very good, especially in combination with a good primer.
I have some other primers I love just as well (or more) but I am afraid they are not available in India so I won´t start teasing here 😉

Without primer (or good collag. booster) the MUFE HD foundation gets to dry in the long run – so they say. Never had this problems but I do not have dry skin. However, dealing with skin over 40 is not easy and the MUFE HD foundation is doing the job very good.

I have to try MACs new HD foundation, too – it was launched here about two weeks ago at the pro stores.

        1. I agree, I like using it with a primer more than using it directly on my skin. Love it’s texture. In fact I am going to review it with a few days. I think MUFE is becoming one of my fav brand. Zero issues so far. 🙂

yeah I saw MAC’s HD foundations, I think they had to manufacture them. I wonder if they are just pro product…Are they?

          1. I am a big fan of MUFE already.
They also have the best MATTE black eyeshadow I ever seen/used.
Forget MAC Carbon – which I do not consider a good, matte black, it only looks good in the container so far.

When it comes to cosmetics in general it is important to pay attention on the individual skin condition. How a product looks on face depends on many things like skin condition, skincare and primers/finishers you use and a lot more, even what you eat. No kidding, I saw same product look totaly different on different beauties, even the onface shown color was.

I am not sure but the MAC HD foundation is supposed to be a pro product, they launched it together with the new HD Sticks (lip- and multipurpose), a product outstanding in deep writing and long lasting MATTE finish. End of the month I will go to the pro store and pick up some of these.

  2. I use this primer every single day and I can’t do without it. I use it with the Hd foundation and these two products together rock my day.

Good review and I agree..

  3. Hey Rati…
i knw it’s a bit out of topic…but can u suggest me a good bronzer.. ?:-) ..not a very high end one…just a regular one..as m not sure how to apply it exactly..just want to have something to experiment..n yes i have a wheatish complexion…

        1. You can use it around the sides of your nose and it would make your nose look slimmer. below your jawline or you can use it as a blush also. actually using a bronzer alone is not a good idea, you must use it with a highlighter. Bonzer alone can make your face look muddy so the highlighter would help to enhance your features. let’s say if you apply bronzer on the sides of your nose but don’t use a highlighter on the bridge of your nose, it wouldn’t look nice.

Do you have any highlighter with you?

          1. nops :-((
m a bit new in make up…dont knw much abt bronzers n highlighters….
tell me a good highlighter as well…
n m also bad at picking up things that match my complexion exactly… coz sometimes u cant try the product directly on the face…n my wrist n face are quite different….any suggestions on that ?:-)
            m a natural shell in Lakme…

            1. You may pick up beyu sun powder. I reviewed it some time back. or you may pick up two blushes from colorbar – trace gold and one shade darker blush to just earth. 🙂

Just earth would look very pretty as a blush on your skintone. 🙂

              1. Thanks a ton Rati….ur really very helpful 🙂
i’ll read the review… where can i get Beyu cosmetics..actly never heard abt them b4.. ?:-) u knw what.. i told my mom i wanna get a blush…n imagine what she said…ur only 21 and not even married who wears blush at that age    ..i seriously broke out into laughter….why is make up considered an after marriage thing??? ?:-) ?:-)

  4. Rati, nice review
I wouldn’t buy this primer as it’s too pricey 😛
and also that i won’t use a primer for now
    Maybe after i turn 22 😐
    I know stupid reason haha
    😛
    I have a question:
I apply a lot of kohl around my eyes and i do the same thing everyday.
I have big eyes , and fair skin.
I wanted this dewy finish to my face, with some glow 😀 ??
You think i should try the maybelline whitestay?
i want to do something different, but i hate eyeshadows [Like blue, green..and all 😐 ]
    Can you suggest something?
I am asking you this because , we know what works in India 😀
and we cannot go around here wearing Yellow eyeshadow 😛
    so 😉 hahhahaa :silly:

    1. Just to point one thing:
Indian beauties are to 99,9 % winter color types.
And guess what – primary yellow IS part of the winter color type palette.

WARM yellows do not fit well to winter type.
But cool and neutral do very well :-))

      1. Thnks for that bit of info Tatjana. 🙂 It’s just that women in India don’t wear makeup. I think among all my friends, i am the only one who is so crazy about makeup. My friends still love their gloss and kajal only.

the point is that if you start doing things out of the way, it kind of feels odd. No matter how much I love orange eye shadow, i for one know that I cannot go out wearing it. It’s not about what others would think about you but that uneasiness creeps in somewhere.

        1. Thank you Rati for this information.
I got the point. When I see all of these beautiful wedding make ups from India it is the last thing to come on my mind that it may be unusual wearing eyeshadow.

          According to color types:
Orange is not the best bet for winter color type, too.
Because it is a warm color – the cardinal color of the autumn color type.
There are bright, clear oranges (spring color type palette) that do not look that bad on winter types like a muted one does, because there are clear. But it is still the wrong temperature. Winter color type is primary clear and secondary attribute is cool. So the winter color type fits best in clear, rich and cool or neutral colors, hard contrasts, fabulous color drama and so on. It is fm the only color type not looking “overthrown” in black without any makeup.

          1. I think you must write an article on this some time. Would be very very helpful. 🙂

Regarding the beautiful Indian wedding makeup you see, I have to say that it’s the only time of their lives that they do it. Sounds strange no? 🙂

    2. Gia, go for eye pencils. I know what you are saying. these days I have become bold enough to wear eye shadows to market and all but i do get stares from people, especially women.. But you can wear eye pencils in all beautiful colours and smudge them softy with a Q Tip. It gives a nice soft look to eyes and you get to wear your colours a well. Lakme and colorbar do good job wih their eye pencils.

I don’t think maybelline UV gives you a dewy finish. More than that I think it’s disc now. What skin type do you have?

      1. HAHAHAHHA JAHNVI :rotfl: :rotfl:
        hhahahha
Credit goes to her for giving me inputs on “YELLOW EYESHADOWS” 😛
        haha!
Okay now back to business :chic:
I have a Combination skin rati, which turns suddenly “OILY” out of nowhere! My skin suffers from Multiple personality disorder :-((
        so yea?
I love that dewy finish look you get it?
😛 It looks so Angel like 😛

        Please donate your ideas today
You can make a difference 🙂
:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: hahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        1. Oh!! My dew finish comes with my foundations and highlighters.. 😀

I generally use the Max factor Age Miracle foundation or MAC SPF 15 mineralize foundation. I use colorbar’s trace gold or Cliniqe’s fresh bloom all over for highlighters..

All the reviews are on blog. Check archives. 🙂

You can seriously check out Colorbar’s trace gold , it’s a pretty golden highlighter. If you want something super duper natural, I think revlon skin lights or Lakme radiance foundation are good options.

      2. Well: yes 😀
If you can get some f. e. over ebay or somewhere else, try MAC Going Bananas – I used it for the eye make up you se on the avatar eye. There is also a stronger color pigment from MAC, primary yellow – it goes very good with greens and blues – you even do not need green, blending blue and yellow into each other is giving you nice shades of green 🙂

  5. Ive got Smashbox photofinish primer…Initially it was amazing..but now it breaks me out..I wonder if youve had such issue with the MUFE one???.

  6. Rati sweetheart I am coming to mumbai for Diwali to visit in-laws…Please Please do all your wonderful MUFE reviews till then so i can go and shop wisely 😀 😀 😀

I just added the MUFE Primer to my wish list…already had the HD Blush on it…Can you tell us about the foundations, as if they are just as outstanding?

I am currently thinking of giving a try to a new one as my HG foundation is Max Factor Miracle Touch as for me its inexpensive and one of the best I had ever owned, and i did try a looooooooooooooooooot of other higher and lower brands….

    1. I’ll tell you about foundation and a few more things from MUFE. 😉

I love their age renew foundation , after it gets over I am going to try the miracle touch foundation. the only problem with max factor is that you should be able to find your perfect match. Otherwise they do a beautiful job with bases. 🙂

  7. I’ve tried Smashbox photo finish primer and din like it so much  …It kinda mattifies your face and leaves it dry…This one sounds nice and the texture is much creamier compared to that of Smashbox 🙂

    1. You know, Appu I didn’t want a primer like that. I was looking for something that is a little like a moirturizer and not exactly a product that sits on top of my skin. So I am pretty happy with this. I can always repurchase it. 🙂

  8. Rati – I wanted to know the back ground of MUFE, was wondering if you could shed some light. General stuff like who owns MUFE, when was it founded, whats their policy statement etc etc. Unfortunately MUFE doesn’t seem to have its own wiki ?:-)

    1. oh!!!

The go-to brand for industry insiders and beauty buffs the world over, Make Up For Ever was created in 1984 in the discreet Parisian workshop-boutique of makeup artist Dany Sanz. It didn’t take long before famous makeup artists, models, and movie stars heard about the collection and came calling for its amazing shades and high-performance formulations. Now, Make Up For Ever has grown into a major beauty brand, without ever losing its cult appeal.

      🙂

        1. Oooooh is that so ? – Just checked it out – turns out LVMH owns just about every fancy french company ( this is me exaggerating) :-/ :-/ :-/ I have a love/hate relationship with conglomerates – they own bloody everything !

          1. Same here, Janhavi.
I am a NO´real cat, too (they own about 50 to 60 beauty brands actually and I buy none of them for years now). When it comes to the big conglomerats, Estée Lauder Companies (they f. e. own MAC, Bobbi Brown are more sympathic).

            1. Lol Im assuming you mean Lo’real ? I get what you mean though I do use L’oreal on occaision, mostly just coz its stuff i picked a while ago and haven’t had the heart to throw away. I get why you would prefer the estee lauder companies and i think its cause their companies function more autonomously, with lo’real often I find they have a product and you can find something almost similiar for half the price at Maybelline ( while both are owned by Lo’real ). I was heartbroken when Lo’real bought The Body Shop !!!! :brokenheart: :brokenheart: :brokenheart: Even though I have it from a very credible source that Lo’real isn;t planning on interfering with the The Body Shop products etc .. but stillll 😥 😥 😥

  9. Since Ihave not yet started using a primer..I have a few doubts here Rati..
1.So primer has to be applied after moisturizer and before foundation is it?
2.You had mentioned tht you dont use your liquid foundation when you use this primer-is tht just ur experiment or when a primer is used foundation is not required?
3.Do you use a seperate primer for your eye make up or the same one holds good?

    1. 1. Yup, after moisturizer and before foundation., It’s a base of your makeup. if you have oily skin, you cna skip moisturizer and apply primer directly.

      2. primer basically evens out the skin tone, your pores are less visible, you skin looks smoother and whatever you apply on primer tends to stay longer. I started doing it as an experiment, it works well for me.:)

      3. I use MAC paint pot for eyes. Like to keep my face and makeup stuff separate.

      Hope that helps. 🙂

  10. Dear Rati,

it was gr8 coming thru ur blog while i was searching some info on primers. i m basically frm dubai n a learning makeup artist. i have some issues n confusions on the primers which i guess u have sorted. Cos being n artist n esp a starter i dont wanna spend so much into products. i have done a short course frm mumbai n now doin a lil bit here.

now since i got some info on primers n get to understand their importance i had recently purchased an inglot eye primer to c how long does it holds the eye makeup. my question is what if someone has a color difference on their eyes like a person being fair but the area around eyes is darkbrown n the brow area is again fair. so do we use the primer first n then use the foundation/concealer to give it n even tone?? i have this kryolan foundation pallette which is creamy base n gives good coverage. i dont use liquid foundation much as my tutor says that however the type of skin it is of a client but on the function day u need to give them good coverage which cant be given with liquid foundation.

i have still lot more to ask if you can tell me n easier way i can chat with you.. or i will continue writing here….ur doing a gr8 job:)

    1. welcome to IMBB Ekta. :))

When you apply foundation on your clients face, apply some foundation lids as well. then set it with powder and then you can move ahead with the eyeshadows. that would neutralize the darkness on eyes. Infact your eye primer should do the same thing. just apply a layer of eye primer all over , set it with loose powder. that should neutralize.

if you are using a primer on lids, you dont need to use a foundation on lids again. that might cake. use either.

you get a lot of full coverage foundations too such as mac studio fix but kryolan foundations are pretty awesome. 🙂

      hope that helps. 🙂

  11. I love this primer. I use green during the summer because my skin can look VERY red when it’s hot and blue during the winter. This primer helps to keep my skin matt longer and minimize my pores. I always get them in bulk when I visit the States because I can’t get them from where I live. I have finished at least 5 of these already and will continue to buy them.
