My Experience with Philips Satinelle Advanced Wet and Dry Epilator BRE630/00:

Philips Satinelle advanced epilator comes packed in a sturdy and compact cardboard box packaging. The box houses all the information regarding the product. There is also a leaflet inside the box for the instruction, caution and other details. Further, all the contents, epilator with epilating head, facial epilator cap, delicate area epilator cap, shaving head, trimmer comb, massage roller epilator cap, brush cleaner and charging adaptor, come individually packed in plastic and the whole process of unboxing is very tiring. But, once done, all the things can be placed in the basic pouch provided along in the package. Overall, the packaging was sturdy and including a pouch makes it travel friendly. Just slid the pouch filled with all the parts and you are good to go.

Now, let’s talk about the epilator itself. Philips Satinelle epilator has a sleek S-shaped handle with light purple-coloured epilating head. The epilator is very lightweight and the sleek s-shaped handle makes it very easy to work with. The epilator has a chic design and looks very appealing and classic. On the bottom side of epilator, there in an icon shaped like battery to let you know the charging status. And, the socket to connect the charger is at the base of the epilator. When the charger is connected, the icon keeps blinking for few minutes and then it stops blinking and remains steady throughout the charging time. The light of the icon turns off as soon as the epilator is charged. The charging time is 1.5 hours. When the battery is almost empty, the icon flashes red light. At the back of the epilator, there is button which is needed to be pushed to remove an attachment.

On the front side of the handle, there is a button and two inscriptions – I and II. There is only a single button to perform three different functions. When the button is pressed once, the epilator starts at its full speed and the mark with II lightens up depicting the high speed. When the button is pressed once more i.e. pressed twice, the epilator runs at low speed setting and the mark with I lightens up depicting the slow speed. And, when the button is pressed one more time i.e. pressed thrice, it turns off the epilator. The single button helps immensely in maintaining the sleek design of the handle. That’s all said about the epilator.

Now, we will be discussing about the each attachments. There are two main heads – epilator head and shaving head. The massage roller cap, facial cap and delicate area cap are used with epilator head while the trimmer comb is clipped on the shaving head. Let’s read further to know about each of them.

Epilator head: Philips satinelle advanced epilator is quite different from the previous Philips epilator as these are built of ceramic discs. The ceramic discs comparatively make less noise than the regular metallic ones. It has bigger epilating area with curved surface. It makes the movement and epilation easy and comparatively fast. There is also an in-built LED in the epilator head, which turns on as soon as the button is pressed and turns off only when the epilator is turned off. The light really makes a difference. It helps in catching fine and bleached hair easily. The light only focuses on the skin not anywhere else, so it is not at all a discomfort.

I have used this epilator on myself and my mom. My mom has fine hair and minimal hair growth while I have coarse hair with dead right growth. When using for my mom, the epilator plucks all the hair from its root, which is very good. However, it fails to catch very fine hair and she has to go multiple numbers of swipes. And, in the end most of the times those fine hair aren’t plucked.

Coming to my case, I have coarser hair and the thickness is more on legs when compared to other areas. When I use for hands and underarms, the epilator plucks all the hair from the roots and with regular exfoliation there is no ingrown hair. On the other hand, when used for the legs, the epilator break 15-20% of the hair and it leads to ingrown hair sometimes. Since, the hair is plucked from the roots, the growth happens at its usual pace.

Hence, the efficacy of epilator depends on the hair type and from the above observations, it is safe to say that it is not effective in removing very fine hair and breaks off coarse hair. The epilator can be used in the shower as well, but the number of swipes are more in the wet condition. Hence, I prefer to use it dry, but for thighs and underarms, I prefer in wet condition. It reduces the sensation to a greater extent.

If you are wondering about the pain during the epilating process, no one, including my sister, my mom and I, feel any kind of pain. To be honest, we only feel tingling sensation that keeps minimizing and maximising throughout the process. And, if you have very low endurance limit, then you might not like the idea of using an epilator. For us, it is just like the same as waxing.

Facial epilator cap: The facial epilator cap reduces the epilator area to make it work for facial hair. This cap has comparatively lesser opening than the delicate area cap and the glossy material glides over the skin easily. I always use this cap while removing facial hair. The cap makes it easy to remove the facial hair, including upper lips and near the eyebrows. However, it cannot be used to create precise eyebrows and you will have to get another epilator especially for that. Other than that, the cap works perfectly.

Delicate area epilator cap: Delicate area epilator cap is similar to the facial epilator cap except in the difference in exposed area. The delicate cap covers lesser area of the epilator head when compared to the facial cap. It is meant for epilating the delicate areas like underarm and bikini area. I, however, have never used an epilator for the bikini area and prefer waxing. I also do not prefer epilator for underarms, but at the sudden circumstances, I find it the best option. The glossy material of the cap makes it very easy to slide over the skin.

Massage roller epilator cap: This cap is meant to reduce the sensation from pulling of the hair. And, trust me, it really does comfort the skin. The roller cap has beads over the perimeter that rolls while the epilator moves on. The beads massage the skin and reduce the sensation. Also, it gets clipped on the epilator head easily.

Shaving head: The shaving head works good, providing a close enough shave. However, I really find it difficult to clean up the head as the few hairs get stuck in it. To be honest, I would always prefer using the Gillette Venus razor above this, but providing a shaving head in this is smart move to keep the grooming tools at minimum while travelling.

Trimmer comb: The trimmer comb works alright when coming to the do the trimming job. I use it for the bikini area. It gets clipped over the shaving head easily and does not come off. It is made up of plastic dyed purple. And, while using the trimmer comb I have to be careful because its pokey. It sometimes pokes into the skin in the process. That’s all about the epilator and its attachments. If you find epilating painful or the epilating session leads to bumps and redness, then here are a few advices. I am not new to epilators and prefer using them now and then.

So, let’s explore some helpful tips:

  • Always take shower before an epilating session. Also, ensure that your skin is clean and free from any other product like lotions or moisturizers.
  • For best results, exfoliate the skin. It helps in preventing ingrown hair.
  • During epilating, if you cannot endure the pain, then use numbing balms or creams. These are readily available in the market. However, I feel like that it is more like tingling sensation rather than true pain.
  • Also, if you have full hair growth, then first use a trimmer to shorten them. It is very likely that an epilator will break long hair.
  • After epilating, slather on aloe vera gel or witch hazel lotion. It will help in preventing the bumps and red skin completely. When I had used an epilator the first time, it made my skin red and bumpy. Hence, as a precaution, I used aloe vera gel and witch hazel lotion over different areas to see which one would work better, and both work perfectly. After using aloe vera gel or witch hazel lotion, the skin remains hydrated while there is not redness or discomfort. Don’t wait for till the end for applying the gel or lotion. I apply over an area as soon as I finish using epilator there.
  • To prevent ingrown hair, exfoliate the skin in between the sessions.

Would I Recommend Philips Satinelle Advanced Wet and Dry Epilator BRE630/00?
If you don’t have extremely coarse hair, then yes. It tends to break the coarse hair on my legs sometimes and I don’t think it is a good idea to use for extremely coarse hair.
