I am amongst the most unromantic and non-mushy people on the planet and my husband will vouch for it. I find PDAs very disturbing and like Rads, I stare and embarrass those who indulge in PDAs. Also, I would fight and argue with my husband to watch a late-night horror movie over a romantic one and then wake him up in the middle of the night to accompany me to the loo. It is very difficult for a person such as me to comprehend why certain people give up their lives after being ditched by their loves. But, at the same time, I find it infinitely wonderful to see couples who have had successful romances and marriages and have stuck together from the prime to the twilights of their lives. The people (couples) who have grown old together and have remained faithful to each other throughout their lives are incredible people. So, I have sorted out a few of the incredible romantic couples in recent times. (Please note that I have taken some excerpts from wikipedia and web for factual presentation.)
1. Dana and Christopher Reeve
Christopher D’Olier Reeve (September 25, 1952 – October 10, 2004) was an American actor, film director, producer, screenwriter and author. He achieved stardom for his acting achievements, including his notable motion picture portrayal of the fictional superhero Superman.
On May 27, 1995, Reeve became a quadriplegic after being thrown from a horse in an equestrian competition in Virginia. He required a wheelchair and breathing apparatus for the rest of his life.
Reeve married Dana Morosini in April 1992, and they had a son. After becoming quadriplegic, Christopher found immense support and love from his Dana, who stuck to him and stool like a pillar of strength for Christopher and they founded together Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, which is dedicated to curing spinal cord injuries.
After Christopher’s accident, Dana declared to Christopher: “I still love you no matter what. You are still you.” Dana loved to ride horses. In 2005, she told Larry King: “I rode my whole life, and after Chris had his accident, I stopped riding, primarily because he loved it so much, and I think it really would have been painful for him if I was going off riding and he wasn’t able to. And it didn’t mean that much to me to drop.”
2. John Lennon and Yoko Ono
John Lennon was an English musician and singer-songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles. He was assassinated in 1980. John Lennon married Yoko Ono and campaigned for peace in Vietnam. Ono was regarded by Lennon as an “almost magical being” who could solve all his problems for him, but this was a “grand illusion”, and she openly cheated on him. Both he and Yoko were burnt out from years of hard drugs, overwork, emotional breakdowns, quack cures, and bizarre diets, to say nothing of the effects of living constantly in the glare of the mass media. After their separation, “no longer collaborating as a team, they remained in constant communication. … No longer able to live together, they found that they couldn’t live apart either.” (source: wikipedia). Though John Lennon and Yoko Ono were one of a kind, they stuck to each other.
3. Sonia and Rajiv Gandhi
Sonia (from Orbassano, Italy) met Rajiv Gandhi, who was enrolled in Trinity College at the University of Cambridge in 1965 at a Greek restaurant while working there. Sonia and Rajiv Gandhi married in 1968. It was very courageous decision on part of Rajiv Gandhi, the scion of most powerful political family, to marry a person who did not even belong to his nation and make her accepted by not only his family but also the entire nation. Sonia Gandhi played an important role in keeping Rajiv Gandhi away from politics for long and it was not until Indira Gandhi’s death that she allowed her husband to join active politics. They remained married to each other until the demise of Rajiv Gandhi.
4. Nita and Mukesh Ambani.
Mukesh Ambani is a powerful Indian business magnate and the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Limited. Nita Ambani is his wife, who is also a dancer, educationist, social worker, and an art lover. They have been married for more than 25 years now.
Nita says that Mukesh proposed to her in the car at peak traffic time and didn’t start the car until she said yes to his proposal…..how cute. Nita says she was hooked by Mukesh, booked by Mukesh, and cooked by Mukesh. Nita says that Mukesh calls her his true life partner and she just enjoys being Mukesh’s wife.
When asked, “what’s the best thing about being Mrs Nita Ambani?” Without a pause, she says, “I love being Mukesh’s wife!” The warmth with which she talks about one of India’s most powerful men is unmistakable. “He is my soul mate; I love being the mother of his kids, and playing every role that I have to being his wife.”
Ask her, in this age of affairs and divorces, how the two have managed to keep it together and she reveals, “First and foremost, we are great friends. Both of us have very different operating styles, but we value each other’s opinions. We are willing to listen to each other, which I think is very important in a relationship.”
Mukesh, she says, enjoys watching her perform bharatnatyam. “He loved my performance at my mum-in-law’s (Kokilaben Ambani) birthday recently. I like to do things that he likes. He likes Indian art and culture, and I make it a point to take interest in those things,” she adds.
Here’s more dope…….Mukesh Ambani gifted his wife a private jet worth 242 crores!!!! and they live together in a 4500 state-of-the-art house (!!!!) and the electricity bill amounts to 70 lakh rupees (per month).
5. Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles
The relationship between Camilla and Prince Charles began when they met at a polo match in 1970. Though she became one of the numerous girlfriends of Charles, and he was said to have wanted to marry her, Camilla was seen by royal courtiers as an unsuitable match for the future king. Charles had met Camilla too early, and that he had not asked her to wait for him when he went overseas for military duties in 1972. They renewed their romantic relationship in the 1980s.
After the fairytale wedding with Princess Diana went sour, Prince Charles went back to Camilla and they kept the relationship alive. After the death of Princess Diana, it was Prince Williams who made an effort to bring them together in public eye again and Prince Charles and Camilla Parker got married in 2005.
6. Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio
DiMaggio was considered to be one of the greatest baseball players, but he hated the limelight and sports fans were stunned when he suddenly married Monroe in 1954. Marilyn Monroe was an American actress, singer, and model. He was 39 and already retired, she was 27 and at the height of her fame. The couple split within nine months, but DiMaggio continued to love Monroe throughout his life.
Monroe, who allegedly enjoyed affairs with both John Kennedy, the US president, and his attorney general brother, Robert, committed suicide with an overdose of sleeping pills in 1962.
DiMaggio organized Monroe’s funeral and for the next 20 years had half-a-dozen red roses delivered to her grave thrice a week until his death.
Joe DiMaggio’s last words were, “I’ll finally get to see Marilyn.”
7. Hrithik Roshan and Suzanne Roshan
Hrithik had previously confessed that he saw Suzanne Khan across a traffic light and fell in love with her. Although, they were childhood friends, both of them fell in love much later. Suzanne maintains that neither of them verbally made a commitment but they knew that what they had was RIGHT! They have been married for more than 10 years now and Hrithik Roshan seems very much in love and committed to his wife. Though, there was a very much fabricated story for publicity’s sake about Hrithik Roshan’s and Barbara Mori’s love affair to fuel their film “Kites”…..neither could the affair story save the film nor rock the marriage. Hrithik Roshan and Suzanne are still going strong.
8. Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri
Shahrukh’s personal story can never be complete if one were not to talk about his romance and subsequent marriage with Gauri. Shahrukh being a muslim and Gauri being a hindu, his marrying Gauri whom he had met in 1984 and eventually married in 1991 was indeed a tough task to accomplish. After falling in love during their school days and after years of courtship and being married for 20 years, nothing seems to affect the rock solid marriage despite the gay rumors and kissing the foreign guy. One of the best married couples in Bollywood who are still going strong.
9. Ajay Devgan and Kajol
The 24th of February, 1999 witnessed the culmination of Ajay Devgan and Kajol Mukherjee’s five-year-old long courtship as they tied the knot in a simple family wedding. This unassuming couple is very much in love and spend a lot of time together and away from the limelight. There are not even the occasional indispensable linkups and rumors associated with a celebrity. Even though both of them have successful showbiz careers, their family life is their first priority, which is what works for them. Good going!!!!.
10. Sachin Pilot and Sara Abdullah
Sachin Pilot is the young congress MP from Rajasthan and son of the late Union minister Rajesh Pilot and a minister of state in the Ministry of Communications and Technology. Sarah Abdullah is daughter of ex-CM of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah.
Sarah Abdullah and Sachin Pilot’s love story looks like the one out of a Bollywood movie. A typical – Hindu boy, Muslim girl love affair, reported family disapproval, a secret wedding. Both Sarah Abdullah and Sachin Pilot are young and charming, both have studied abroad and belong to the powerful political backgrounds.
Sara Abdullah and Sachin Pilot tied the knot in 2004 in a quiet ceremony in Delhi, which was boycotted by Sara’s family, who didn’t approve of the alliance. Both of them fought all odds and influences to get married to each other. Sarah Abdullah is the women behind Sachin Pilot – not coming into limelight but supporting him all through.
