This review is just in time for the festive season – an actual glitter product 😛 This by the way, was my first tryst with an actual glitter product. I have never been drawn to glitter, maybe because till now it didn’t gel with my makeup aesthetics. Also, I didn’t feel it made sense for me since the whole – “matte shadow with ageing lids” beauty rule. It has been a bit of a journey to have reached where I am today, where I am excited to break the rules and try something new. So, let us see how my experiments with my first glitter product turned out.

A buildable, water-based liner that contains superfine glitter in a clear base. All the glitz of glam rock—without the spandex or bad hair—Urban Decay’s Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner contains superfine glitter in a clear base that dries down quickly and really stays put (for long wear without any fallout). Wear it alone, apply it over Urban Decay’s eyeshadow, or layer two shades together for a more intense effect. It is formulated without sulfates, phthalates.
What else you need to know:
The precise, thin-tipped brush makes it easy to create fine, glittery lines. Want more sparkle? Use the side of the brush to sweep sparkle all over your lids. Or, for an even bolder, jewel-encrusted look, remove the wiper (the little piece that controls how much product comes out of the bottle) and tap on Heavy Metal with your fingers. The glitter is suspended in a gel, so it won’t separate in the bottle. Peach and cucumber extract condition the skin, while carrot extract smooths and softens.

Water, Polyethylene Terephthalate, Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, PVP, Phenoxyethanol, Polyurethane-11, PVM/MA Decadiene Crosspolymer, Methylparaben, Sodium Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber/Concombre) Fruit Extract, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot/Carotte) Root Extract, Prunus Persica (Peach/Pêche) Fruit Extract, Isobutylparaben, Propylparaben.
The product comes packaged in a normal liquid liner packaging. The tube is transparent – enabling you to identify the colour easily. The tube has a wiper (most tube products do) which controls the amount of product clinging to the brush and ensuring that too much product does not get out at one time. The brush itself is an extremely fine one, reminds me of the brush in Armani Corrector/Concealer. I presume the brush has been kept this fine to ensure one is able to draw a fine line with it. However, if you want to use the glitter as an “all-over lid” product or need to cover more area than the fine brush allows, the brand suggests to remove the wiper and use the product without it. My take on it – while it isn’t too difficult to remove the wiper form the tube, I don’t think it’s something I would like to do time and again. I would either want the wiper in or out. I wouldn’t be keen on spending the extra 2 minutes every time I use the product – to pull the wiper out.
My Experience with Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner Midnight Cowboy:
Shade: I don’t know which hoodie does Urban Decay take their product names out of, so let’s just get on with the shade itself. The shade is a beige gold glitter in a clear gel base. So, you basically have particles of glitter suspended in a clear base. The base being clear will not change or distort the colour of the shadow below. The beige gold glitter is striking and distinctly eye catching. This is definitely over the top – depends on how you use it. Since this was my first experiment with a glitter product, I am glad to have tried this shade – golden beige works well with our skin tone and is still neutral enough to be able to pair it with any look – unlike say a pink or purple or green glitter.

I have shared two EOTDs here with you. The first one with the red eyeliner is from Christmas last year. That’s the first time I had tried the product. I thought the red and gold liner would be perfect for the Christmas party. The red liner, by the way, is Kat Von D liquid lipstick in Outlaw. And no, I do not recommend/propagate using a lip product on your lid – the ingredients may not be eye safe. Yes, I have used it, at my own discretion.

The second look was from day 1 of the Ganpat festival. I did a large-ish wing and added this glitter onto the wing. I think I got a bit carried away and also added it to my lower lip line. That sure caught eye-balls!! I think, sometimes I just like to shock the people around me! 😉

Texture: Disclaimer – this being my first full-on glitter product, I did not have anything to compare it with. Being a part of the beauty community, I had read of other people’s experiments with glitter – how it can be difficult to work with; loose glitter needs a base like a glitter glue or something and can still result in fall out. Also, it can be very messy to work with. With this product, I did not seem to face any of these concerns. It wasn’t messy. The thin brush gave me ample control on the product coming out. The gel base ensures that I don’t need a separate glitter glue. Also, I did not seem to have fall out issues with it – maybe just a speck or two. However, all isn’t quite hunky dory. The glitter particles are fine but still distinctly visible, which isn’t the issue.

The concern is that when you apply the product with the brush – if you are looking for a line application – the glitter particles tend to deposit and not move as fluidly in line as you would want them too, so the application is a bit choppy. You are not able to get a clean straight line. Plus, the wiper in the tube prevents too much product to come onto the brush at one time, which means you have to keep dipping in to get more product. One eye takes about 5-6 dips. You can remedy it by removing the wiper from the tube. This will allow you to get more product in one go. But that can end up getting a tad bit messy.

The gel base dries out fairly quickly – in about 30 seconds or so. Once dry, it sets and is pretty much budge proof. It will not move the entire day. There is hardly any fall out. As long as you don’t rub your eyes, it stays put. However, if you do rub your eyes, the glitter will flake off.
Pigmentation: Difficult to discuss pigmentation on this. As far as the glitter is concerned, it is distinct and bright. The base itself is clear – by design. Having said that, the issue is that it can be difficult to disperse the glitter particles uniformly – whether you are drawing a line or trying to disperse it over a larger area. It its impossible but takes a bit of time and effort.
Longevity: Love the longevity of this. It stays put the whole day. It will not fade, it will not smudge. There is barely any fall out – maybe a spec or two. It just doesn’t budge. It gives you full day wear. You need a oil based makeup up remover to take it off at the end of the day.
Pros of Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner Midnight Cowboy:
- Lovely beige gold glitter with a clear base.
- Extremely bright and eye catching.
- Once dry – does not budge at all.
- Effective and efficient packaging.
- The thin tip is easy to work with.
- Did not sting my eyes or cause irritation.
- Hardly any fall out.
- Since the base is clear, it does not change the colour of the eyeshadow shade on which it is being applied.
- Decent packaging.
- Does not need a glitter glue as a base.
Cons of Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner Midnight Cowboy:
- It takes a little effort to apply as a liner – the glitter particles do not flow as fluidly as a colour pigment would.
The product does have challenges to application. However, I do think it is an excellent choice for someone new to glitters (like me). It gives one the ease of working with glitter but with minimal hassle. I would definitely like to check more shades in this range.
