MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural Medium Dark Review

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural

A luxurious domed face powder with minerals, slowly baked to provide a dimensional yet natural-matte finish. Provides perfect low coverage. Use to set and fix foundation or as a touch-up throughout the day.

MAC Mineralize SkinFinish Natural is one of my first product that I purchased from MAC. I bought this in December along with MAC Mineralize Satinfinish SPF 15 Foundation.

Honestly, when I bought it I had no clue why I was purchasing it. I was pissed with Lakme’s base makeup and the MAC makeup artist did such an excellent job on giving the most natural look to my skin that I picked MSF up in a jiffy. It was expensive for a compact but then I couldn’t go on looking like a white cakey ghost for the rest of my life. Both MAC Mineralize Satinfinish SPF 15 Foundation and MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural that MUA used on me gave me exactly the look that I always wanted. Clear, non cakey, natural, and dewy .

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish

I am NC 35/40ย  in MAC foundations, so they gave me the shade Medium Dark. It goes perfectly with my skin tone. It’s available in 8 shades – Light, Light Medium, Medium, Medium Plus, Medium deep, Medium Dark, Dark, and Deep Dark. the shades are actually quite confusing. The other day MAC MUA used Medium Plus on me and it also wentย  well for my skin. :-/ So definitely try the powder at the store before purchasing.

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural Medium Dark

MAC Mineralize skin finish natural is a baked mineral powder.ย  And it is supposed to give a natural look.I have used quite a lot of it so you see the flat top of the product. Otherwise it’s quite a big dome, good enough to last you atleast 2 years even if you use it every single day. It’s crazy. ๐Ÿ˜› It’s 10 gm of product.

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish

The same day I purchased it, I came back home and I applied it on my face- I could see nothing. I applied more and still nothing.ย  I mean I came from the school of thought where powders should “show” on the face and give the satisfaction that I have applied something. For months I kept using it . I mean for some reason I never hated it but it was not something that I fell in love with. It has super fine illuminating particles in it that used to make my skin look a little better than what it was but coverage was almost nil. It was as good as applying nothing on face. I also didn’t know why was I using it. I just had to finish it up.

During the super hot months of April -May, it even made my T Zone oily after a few hours. I have a dry skin otherwise but this is the only powder that was making my face shiny so I stopped using it during these hot months.

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural Medium Dark

I use it with my Body Shop Mineral Foundation Brush.

And this is the amount of product that comes on a brush when you swipe it once. Do you see how sheer it looks.

Now started my makeup classes. The last thing I wanted to spend time before going to the classes was on makeup. So I usedย  to apply MSF, a little blush , mascara and my colourful lipsticks. ๐Ÿ˜› Our teacher used to tell us thatย  Mineralize Skinfinish is a must have in your kit and I used to be like whatever…As I made friends at the institute, they used to ask me what foundation was I using, and I used to be like nothing.. ๐Ÿ™„

When these compliments kept coming continuously day after day, I realized that it’s the powder that’s giving me an even skin tone and the illuminating particles are making my skin look dewy and fresh. All respect for MSF came back. :silly: I know a lot of people with oily skin also love it, I don’t know how. It has never dried my skin or caused any flakiness unlike a few compact powers. Infact I bloody love it. Later a few girls at my institute also purchased Mineralize Skinfinish Natural and now all I get to hear is”it’s so amazing”.

It blends into the skin like a magic. It’s there and it’s not there. You can’t actually makeย  out if there is anything on your skin, atleast I can’t. May be because the shade also matches my skintone so perfectly. You may also purchase the darker shades and use it as a bronzer.

Now there are a few problems also with the product. There is no mirror or an applicator with the product. That’s the most irritating part about it. This is a baked powder, if this breaks you are going to have a tough time managing it. It stays as is on my skin for 3 hours (in summers) or so and then I feel the need to do touch ups. But that I think would also depend from person to person. The shade selection is quite confusing. Please take help of a friend or MUA while selecting the shade.

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural Medium Dark

So there goes my saga about MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Natural. So much over a powder…..It has become my favourite product from MAC and also one of those that I would purchase till MAC manufactures it. I don’t mind spending 1400 bucks for a products that would last me atleast 2 years or longer, if I use it sparingly. It’s totally worth it.

I use it to set my foundation or apply it as it, I like it the way it looks on my face. :)) It holds true to its name- Skin Finish Natural. I am yet to come across a face powder that looks as natural as this does.

I took way too long to review it because I was always confused whether I really like MSF or just like it because everyone else goes gaga over it.

  1. Have you tried this in natural light? I’ve been using it lately and it appears a little muddy on me for some reason. I think I’ll try medium plus next time.
Overall it works great for my oily skin!

    1. I have tried it in all kinds of light. ๐Ÿ˜› It’s been 6 months I have this now. I think it’s about the shade, as you said. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. hey rati i really liked how you reviewed this… i know its a HG product for 95% women out there…
me too joing the gang soon , i purchased it online so i dont have any idea but yes i did get myself color matched ( LATER ON) hahah
    thats me mac crazy ..
    lovely review

  3. If you have been using this for all the pictures that you click, then it’s an awesome product. I own MAC Blot Powder. I don’t think I would buy this until I’m halfway thru the product ( which means not for the next 1 year :pain: )

    1. Aww!! thank you. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeah, a lot of people love MAC blot powder. How do you find it.

I totally relate to your feeling. MAC’s powders just don’t seem to finish. You’ll get bored of them but they would go on and on. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

  4. I am using the MAC sheer/pressed powder and I am ok with it. As you say Mac powder’s never get over ๐Ÿ™ and so I don’t get a chance to try anything else.

    1. I know. I was cribbing the other day that i would never get the free lipstick by using ” MAC to MAC” offer. Nothing seems to get over. ๐Ÿ˜›

But it’s good also na. We pay so much and the amount of product we get justifies it. ๐Ÿ™‚

At the recent fashion week, all they used was MAC Sheer powder to set the makeup. Take pride. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      1. Sheer powder looks like a fav too?? N now I am confused..

Hey Aarthi can you review the sheet powder or maybe just a tiny review here would also do

  5. Im using the studio fix compact (my first mac pdt), looks like its gonna last a very long time, i too hv heard raves abt mineralfinish..im so tempted :-((

      1. I am mostly getting this Renuca so if ur tempted enough to buy this as well we can maybe go together and tag the MAC guru along with us ๐Ÿ˜‰

        1. arey HD now ur tempting me even more ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ but I want to use restraint coz I hardly go out except on the weekends so buying an additional pwd when I just bought this is kinda of sinful, but if u and MACqueen make a plan, let me know Ill tag along if possible and pick up some e/s ๐Ÿ™‚ will be fun

          1. yes dear we shud surely make a plan with the MACQueen…even if we dont have to buy anything I guess just gng to MAC wth her is gng to be fun by itself….

            MACQueen are you listening :announce:

            1. i wonder if it me????? if yes yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i will go with u and if not me bahoooooooo m still not able to impess u thats bad :(:(:( me crying ..
just confirm and dont disappint me ๐Ÿ™‚

              1. lol Rashmi ur NUTS!!!, of course its u, MAC n u r synonymous now, MAC ppl if ur reading this, pls consider making Rashmi PTM aka idrops your official brand ambassador (may take some strain off her husband too :P)

        1. oh alright. Might pick it up after my vitalumiere gets over. ๐Ÿ™‚ Don’t use too much powders for my face. I have dry skin no. ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Hey Rati……cant believe it was a dome before and you made a chappati out of it  …..that shows how much you like this one ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I was trying to finish it up. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

While I was uploading this article, Sanjeev was asking me what this product was. And i was like guess..He said that it looks like mitti. grrrr… He was super happy to read devika’s comment when she said that the one she has looks muddy on her face. Imagine..

Men will always be men. He was like it doesn’t mention anywhere that it’s a face powder, how is he supposed to knw what it is. :pissedoff:

  7. Finally this review is here!! Thank you sooo much!!!

Its supposed to give a matte finish?? But wht attracted me to this is ur glowing face ?:-) ?:-)

I guess it def is value for money since it lasts so long…but gotta be very careful in picking it up since ur gonna be stuck with it for a long time….

I am def checking it out and most probably buying it too

    1. No HD, it doesn’t give matte finish. that’s the whole point. ๐Ÿ˜› It has these light reflective particles that give glow to your face. ๐Ÿ™‚

        1. yeah…n wud have been glad if this included a mirror and an applicator ๐Ÿ™

Did u try the studiofix powder whn you bought this? whts ur opinion abt studio fix? that also seems to be quite popular

          1. I have tried it during my classes. All the MUAs there had 3 studio fix each-very light, medium and dark . They used to mix and match the powders to come to the perfect shades. Studio fix powder is like a compact powder that would give you medium to buildable coverage and if applied more, you may also look cakey with it. Studio fix is more of a powder foundation than a setting powder.

            1. hmm…gotcha….mixing n matching is too much ya  but I will still check it out atleast…I think my next MAC visit is gonna be all exploration mode..

Can we use a compact puff to apply this? You know the kinds we get with compact powder? Atleast that would be convenient to carry arnd…excuse me if this sounds like a v stupid Q..

              1. Actually MUAs have to work with all kind of skin tones so they can’t go on buying all shades of studio fix. SO they mix and match. ๐Ÿ™‚

You may use a puff but I feel that it woks better with a brush. Actually HD test and try and see what works best for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

And also initially it’s in a dome shade so I wonder if the puff would fit in there. ๐Ÿ˜›

  8. rati,
i’m a little confused…please forgive me if i sound a little naive….but can MSF be applied on top of studio fix powder or as it is or only to set the foundation……your answer would help me to make my decision whether i should get it or not…..coz i’m joining work next week and dont want to carry too many things for touch ups….i do have studio fox with me as well as select spf 15 foundation from mac….thanks and take care…..
.-= gunmeen´s last blog ..APRIL FOOL BANAYA!!!!! =-.

    1. Oh no, Gunmeen. Don’t do that. You can apply this over the liquid foundation to set your makeup, not over studio fix powder. Powder over powder would only make your face cakey. ๐Ÿ™‚

I think studio fix with touch ups would be a better option because it has mirror and applicator…think so. It would be easier for you to carry. ๐Ÿ™‚ Alos studio fix gves you a little coverage, this one doesn’t. It’s very sheer and natural looking.

  9. Hey! Rati,
I have mine in Medium…and I totally agree with you, when you say “I will keep buying it till MAC keeps making it”. I caryy a little make up puch with me in my handbag, and MAC MSF is my must have in it… ๐Ÿ˜€ , it’s even great if you need to do touch ups in the evening after office and head out.. it has come to my rescue all the time :-* :-* :-* :-*

    1. Same here Rajol, I keep my tiny brush and MSF always is my pouch. I have this on my face and I am good to go. ๐Ÿ™‚

You must pick up the quick blush from Clinique sometime.

Sooper amazing thing to travel with. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Thanks! Rati, will surely do that. Currently I have a tiny kabuki kinda looking brush, that I use. But, I guess will have ti invest in a good one, sometime soon… :-))

        1. oh..just in case body shop also has a retractable blusher brush. It has a cap so it doesn’t get dirty while travelling…It’s a gyaan day today. ๐Ÿ˜›

          1. oh! Cool…that would be great. Since I keep travling a lot  , this would be awesome…any thing else that you feel I should look into, that could help me during travel time let me know

  10. hey thanks….so on days when you dont feel like dolling up and going through foundation concealer powder and et al… :-)) you can just use MSF and you’re done right ?:-) hope my questions r not irritating you ๐Ÿ™
.-= gunmeen´s last blog ..APRIL FOOL BANAYA!!!!! =-.

    1. no gunmeen. Your questions are not irritating me. Don’t ever think like that. We all are here to help each other no? ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeah, on days when you don’t feel like doing anything, just dab concealer, MSF and blush and your base is done. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Thanks for the article Rati. I am convinced to buy it.. Looks like its time to bid goodbye to all my other powder bases and get this one. This + Studio Fix will be perfect for my needs all year through.

    1. Yeah, poornima. Especially when you have such humid weather, you definitely need powders over liquid or cream bases.

Let me know which shades you pick up. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Sure Rati..

Mostly it would be the same shade of yours I guess..I am also NC 40 in MAC.

Btw, Gals…There is a sale of Lotus Herbals products in Fashion and you. I have posted it on my blog. If anybody is interested, you may check it out.

  12. hey rati…one more thing yaar….going out of context here….does mac make kajals…if yes…do they smudhe…coz i have very watery eyes and my kajal invariably smudges…no matter what…maybe i’m not using it the right way ๐Ÿ˜ฅ so was wondering since the products are so good….then theres hope for me as far as the kajal is concerned…. ๐Ÿ˜•
.-= gunmeen´s last blog ..APRIL FOOL BANAYA!!!!! =-.

    1. MAC makes kohls pencils and technakohl liners. The most talked about black Kohl b y MAC is Smolder, which smudges like hell and if you don’t set it with eyeshadow, you are definitely going to have racoon eyes. Honestly, if used correctly, it’s a gorgeous shade of black. Technakohl liners smudge lesser than the kohl pencils. Infact I quite like them except the fact that they are mechanical pencils. There is, a shade called graphblack , you may pick that up if you want. But all kohl pencils smudge- some more and some less. You have to set them with a shadow.

      1. Try powerpoint pencil. Forgot the name of the black shade. NO smudging. Same price as smolder.thers also a review i wrote on the blog.

  13. Rati..this graphblack..is it safe to be used on the waterline..am not sure of the term..would it cause any irritation to the eyes if used too close to the eye? I want a BLACK BLACK black..hehehee..and I read somewhere this is pretty black.

    1. all the liners that say kohl are safe to apply on the waterline. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have a blue one from the technakohl liner range, it doesn’t bother my eyesa at all. no irritation, nuffin,. ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Oh then I have to get this Graphblack..nothing stays on my waterline..disappears in no time..doesnt smudge or anything..but it just disappears. I think its because I sneeze quite often and eyes watering washes off everything. I like that black black look to stay on..or is it something I am doing wrong? :-(( :-(( Maybe you should do that tutorial after all :-(( :-((

    1. The tears in our eyes have enzymes that break the makeup. So anything that’s on the waterline would start fading after a few hours. The longest staying power I have so far come across is that of the chromagraphic pencils but they also kind of start wearing off after a few hours. You may always do the touchups. regarding smudging, you can always control that by applying shadow on your lower lash liner. The powder prevents the colour from moving down on your under eye area.

So it’s not bad a situation also, you can keep your makeup looking fresh for good long hours and a little touchups here and there can make your makeup go on for whole day. ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. please please pleade rati….do it…both the review and the tutorial….more so the tutorial…i need to see how to set your kajal with the shadow…i never even you’re suppose to do that….the things i’m learning here…gee what a lovely blog rati….thanks….and pleae do the tutorial….i’m eagerly waitin for it….. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€
.-= gunmeen´s last blog ..APRIL FOOL BANAYA!!!!! =-.

  16. I never have problems with smudging, Rati, so no problem with that..but am waiting for your tutorial…am sure its going to be an eyeopener ๐Ÿ˜€

  17. you and nervous….what are you saying….god cant wait for the tutorial….coz i love applying kajal and i end up looking like panda each day….but that doesnt stop me from using it…i’m just glad that i’ll be able to do it without looking like that animal i mentioned in the above line….he..he…he… :-)) :-)) :-))

  18. Hi All,

I write comments very less as I get very little time to visit the sight. But today I am reading all the blogs and sharing my thoughts. So I have a couple of things to add to in agreement to what Rati is saying. With respect to MSF; initially I also did not like it since it did not show and its firmly set it our minds that makeup has to show. But its new age makeup – Nude-natural. But gradually my mind changed. Have a wonderful makeup artist at MAC with whom I gel and discuss & she made me realize (And I dont let anyone else sell me anything). I am not a foundation and powder person at all. But since I work by evening my skin used to look very tired haggard too. MSF is sheer as Rati said butwhat I observed- it has the tedency to become luminiscent as the day goes by making you look radient and fresh and glowy. The trick that I realised by trying and testing it is a good and healthy moisturizer over which to apply it. So your skin should look very hydrated. Of course another enhancement is that your skin should be good without blemishes. Same goes for the Mineralize lose foundation. Make sure to tone your skin also before moisturizing it
Now for the eyes I agree with Rati on blackgraph; this is for gunmeen; I have similar problem. Very watery eyes and nothing sticks. Have tried many kohl pencils and kajals but nothing stays and everything smudges. And I like my eyes as black as possible. But this one worked very well and my satisfaction on its staying power is more than 85%. For not smudging, the trick I apply is to line the waterline (and does not irritate) very dark with it and with a mac smudger smudge it with very very light hands. Do not let it come out. If you are wearing it for 10 hrs so may be after 6 hrs you may like to do a touch up . I wear it for almost 10/11 hrs daily

    1. I agree 100% with you Anshu. It gives that luminous glow after half an hour or so . But when you apply it you just don’t get that satisfaction of applying anything on your face. And yes since it gives very sheer coverage, your skin has to be even and good. I generally dab a little concealer under my eyes and apply it. And I am good to go.

Excellent and useful comment. It totally added to the review. Thanks a ton!! :hugleft:

  19. Hi!
    Thanks for the review ๐Ÿ™‚
I have a question, could you please answer asap because im going shopping soon and this question determines whether i get this product ๐Ÿ™‚
Would my face look cakey if i wore just the mineralised skinfinish natural and a mac powder blusher?

    Hasina x

  20. I recently purchased it for 48SGD. When MUA applied it on my face, it was great. And I asked her to do a little makeover to all my face. I came home and did not wash my face till night coz I dont wanted to lose that effect. I was very happy to purchase this product.
But now since I apply it regularly I dont find any difference. ๐Ÿ™ Even I tried it with Mac studio fix foundation and my regular Revlon colorstay

Can anyone tell where I am wrong???
