10 Health and Beauty Benefits of Kale

Hi all,

“Every leaf of kale you chew adds another stem to your tree of life.”

10 Health and Beauty Benefits of Kale

Kale is famously called the queen of greens and a nutritional powerhouse. You must have noticed this ingredient in various green smoothie recipes. Well, this superfood has many benefits and few are shared here.

1. Works as a detoxifying agent
We all know what detoxifying agents do! They flush out excess toxins from the body and keep the liver healthy. This is one of the many reasons why kale is an essential ingredient in those green smoothies.

2. Aids in weight loss
Kale is high in fibre and protein and gives a feeling of fullness and satiates your tummy for longer intervals. So if you are trying to lose those extra pounds, then you must incorporate kale in your daily intake of food.

3. Prevents premature aging of the skin
Kale is much higher in vitamin C than most other vegetables, containing about 4.5 times much as spinach. A cup of raw kale even contains more vitamin C than a whole orange. Vitamin C is necessary to synthesize collagen, the most abundant structural protein in the body. So if you want to keep your skin healthy and glowing, include kale in your diet.

4. Keeps hair healthy
Kale is loaded with both Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids which keep the hair and scalp moisturized while Vitamin C in kale increases blood circulation on scalp inducing hair growth.

5. Strengthens nails
Kale is a rich source of Vitamin A, K, and C which increase the production of keratin. We all know keratin is very good for our hair as well as our nails. Kale prevents dryness of nails and makes them stronger and healthier.

6. Nourishes skin
When applied topically (or consumed through the diet) kale protects skin elasticity by protecting elastin molecules improving skin suppleness. Vitamin K present is ideal for reducing redness of the skin, promoting healing and reducing swelling.

7. Improves vision
Green vegetables are anyway good for our vision but kale is better than all of them as it has lutein and zeaxanthin that protect your eyes against ultraviolet rays and also reduces the risk of various eye sight disorders.

8. Helps during pregnancy
Kale also contains folic acid which is very important for fetus’s growing nervous system. Kale is also rich in iron and also helps increase breast milk supply after delivery.

9. Lowers cholesterol
Substances called bile acid sequestrants can bind bile acids in the digestive system and prevent them from being reabsorbed. This reduces the total amount of cholesterol in the body. Kale contains substances that bind bile acids and lower cholesterol levels in the body. Steamed kale is particularly effective.

10. Protects against cancer
Kale is a rich source of organosulfur compounds, which have been shown to reduce the risk of many cancers, especially one of the most deadly forms, colon cancer. The cancer-protective compounds in kale have thus been the subject of intense research, particularly their role in blocking the growth of cancer cells and inducing cancer cell death (apoptosis).
