Too Faced Melted Latex Liquified High Shine Lipstick Hot Mess Review

Hello peeps,

I remember reviewing Too Faced Melted Matte lipsticks ages ago (Melted Fuchsia, Melted Candy), I used to quite like them. It was after a few months that I realized how crappy the packaging actually was. If you didn’t use it for some time, the applicator nozzle would get blocked and I just couldn’t figure how to open it! An absolute waste of money! Needless to say, a number of customers must have shared this experience with Too Faced which made them change the packaging to a gloss-type packaging with a doe-foot applicator. So, when there is a matte lipstick by the brand, a gloss would soon follow. So, this Melted Latex collection is the gloss version by Too Faced. And I cannot believe that I am reviewing yet  another gloss product! What happened to me?? Anyway, let us get on with it!

Packaging:
It is a gloss tube packaging with a difference. It is cylindrical on top and flat at the bottom. Functionally, it doesn’t make any difference, but yes, the packaging is visually distinct from other liquid products, by other brands. The sponge applicator is shaped like a shovel, allowing product to sit on it – as the texture of this one is fairly thick. I feel the product s easy to travel with – there is little likelihood of any leakage.

My Experience with Too Faced Melted Latex Liquified High Shine Lipstick Hot Mess:

Color: The shade “Hot Mess” is aptly described as a “berry pink” color. It is a beautiful fall shade, just the kind I like, medium to deep, cool toned, bright berry, purple pink. The shade itself is quite stunning – the kind of shade I often gravitate towards. It is quite bright in itself. Add to it “latex” gloss finish, it makes the product look extremely high shine and very glossy, like one of those avant-garde editorial looks. The effect of the finish with the colour is stunning. It is absolutely eye catching and would be perfect for a night out. This is the kind of colour which would work for almost all skin tones, as long as one is comfortable with wearing something this bright.

Texture: It is funny but the shade name is an apt description of the texture of this product!!!! It is an absolute hot mess!!! The texture is extremely thick and goopy which makes it difficult to spread across your lips. The product feels extremely sticky and heavy on the lips and collects into crevices – read inner corners. And that is not the look I was intending to go for! *eye roll* The worst part is that it does not self level. For better understanding of what I mean, when you apply a nail paint, sometimes, it goes on a little streaky initially, but most nail paints will self-level themselves.

So, in a couple of seconds, you see the thicker portions of the nail paint settling down and levelling out – giving an even finish to the application. A good gloss would do the same, like Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss in Vintage. This liquid lipstick however refuses to self level. Meaning, whatever portion has more product, it remains there. Despite your attempts at levelling with the applicator, it doesn’t level out smoothly. And then, it doesn’t level out on its own either. Net result is an application which looks and feels uneven. And even though you may think you can carry it off with a slight unevenness, it’s all downhill from there. With wear, the gloss gets patchy and unbecoming, collecting in places and it feels too sticky and heavy on the lips. So, this is something which would work only for a YouTube/Instagram/Snapchat types where you wear it for an hour or so and it is viewed over heavy light, from a distance. It isn’t something you can work for real life. As the shade name suggests, this is a hot mess!!!

Pigmentation: The pigmentation is there but when the product doesn’t apply evenly, the pigment doesn’t spread evenly. So, the effect is patchy for the start. It isn’t that you cannot put in the effort to make the product apply smoothly, but it takes way too long. And it is a gloss, so it is bound to have lesser wear time anyway. Who will put in 15 minutes to apply this and then do re-application a couple of hours down?? Not me!!

Lasting Power: I am at this point where I am thinking why are we still discussing this product, but since we do need to dot our I’s and cross our T’s….here goes! The product would last for about 3-4 hours, but honestly, you would probably take it down long before that because post an hour of wear, the product just feels too sticky and thick and like a jelly. Nope! Not appealing.

Fragrance: There is some fragrance, but I can’t put a finger on it! It isn’t too strong, so not too bothersome either.

Pros of Too Faced Melted Latex Liquified High Shine Lipstick Hot Mess:

  • Gorgeous berry purple pink shade.
  • Has a luscious glossy effect on lips.
  • No feathering or bleeding.
  • No-fuss packaging – easy to travel with.
  • Free from parabens, sulfates, and phthalates.

Cons of Too Faced Melted Latex Liquified High Shine Lipstick Hot Mess:

  • The formula just isn’t upto the mark – doesn’t spread, doesn’t level, gets gloopy, too thick, accumulates in corners. It’s pointless.
  • Gets patchy with wear – with patches of thick mass. No! No! No!!!

IMBB Rating:
A 2.5/5 product.

I really tried with this product. I so badly wanted it to work, just look at that colour and the luscious effect it gives!! How gorgeous is that. Unfortunately, too much effort goes into it and it is still gonna be a mess couple of hours down. Its not worth the effort. Why bother?
