Treatments to Stop Severe Hair Fall: Ask IMBB

Swarnashree asks:

I am Swarnashree, a college-going girl.  I am having severe hair fall. By severe, I mean like really severe! No matter what I do. Home remedies like egg treatment and banana honey hair pack, hot oiling, I still have hair fall.  It’s getting worse day by day, I don’t know what to do.  I feel like crying. Even if I don’t touch my hair, I can see some hair where I sit or sleep. When I comb, so many hair strands fall every time. I have used lots of hair fall control shampoos and conditioners.  I am using Pantene shampoo and conditioner now and Matrix hydrating hair mask and L’Oreal Leave-in Conditioner.  Also, coconut oil + almond oil (Roghan badam shirin).  I have even consulted doctors but what they prescribed, those medicated shampoos made my hair fall problem even worse.   need your help. Please tell me how to prevent this hair fall, please.

THANKS!

  1. Hi Swarnashree,

Has your doctor ruled out any underlying hormonal issue that might be causing the hair fall. Another reason might be vitamin or mineral deficiency – ask your doctor to prescribe you vitamins, zinc, iron, selenium. Also, include green leafy stuff in your diet. Stop experimenting with shampoos and switch to a herbal shikkakai + reetha hair wash.

  2. Hi, plz dont be disheartened. Please get yourself checked for hypothyroid, pcod, amemia, scalp infection etc. do you have any other symptoms? Have you recently started or stopped any medication? Please rule out these issues first, coz the topical masks, shampoos and all are not going to work unless you are internally healthy and disease free. Hope it helps.

  3. I had hairfall due to pregnancy and severe antibiotic treatment…but I suggest you visit a trichologist first and then try new hair products
A friend of mine suggested eating dates, figs, and walnuts daily and adding lemon to your bath water and using a wooden comb try it 🙂

  4. Your problem seems to be related to either hormonal imbalance or some vitamin deficiency. I have had severe hair fall for a few years now due to several different reasons…started with thyroid…then pcod…biotin and vitamin d deficiencies. You definitely need to visit a good doctor and get yourself tested first. I have tried to tackle the root cause each time and have succeeded to an extent. I still take biotin and vitamin d supplements and try to follow a good hair care regime.
An unbalanced lifestyle and improper diet is what causes these problems in the first place. I hope you have a few pointers to begin with 🙂 good luck!

  5. I was facing the same problem last year. I consulted a homoeopathic doctor and was able to see the improvement within a week. Do the same! 🙂

  6. Hello swarnashree!
-Did you have hair fall problems before or just started recently? ( new place? change of water? change of food etc?) – try reverting back to previous regime.
    – Do not take headbath everyday if you are using shampoo. If you have hard water for bathing, please take headbath once in 3 days and try applying oil on your hair and scalp as often as possible. Conditioners are chemicals hence try to opt for natural coconut oil for your hair so that not much hair is pulled out while detangling/combing ( now that you have a huge prob, better avoid chemicals till you are happy abt your hair :).
    – You can always ask your doctor to check and give you multimineral tablets to balance amount of zinc which helps in maintaining hair strength.

  7. As others wrote above, get yourself checked for vitamin/mineral deficiencies or hormonal issues if any. Try not to take stress as stress is a major cause of hairfall even if you are perfectly healthy.
Oil your hair before every wash (let it be for atleast 2-3 hours). Use mild shampoos and a drop or two argan oil/coconut oil to tame frizz/any flyaways instead of a conditioner. Stay away from styling tools till you see improvement.
Use a tea tree shampoo for dandruff. Or you may visit a dermatologist to get a prescription strength anti dandruff shampoo. Dandruff causes hairfall too.

    1. Take a balanced diet, drinks lots of water and stay away from dust and pollution. Cover your hair whenever you have to go out in the dust.
Use home made masks (henna, curd, methhi powder pack) instead of store bought ones.

  8. Sometimes, stress also contribute to hair fall..try to stay stress free…
Try to use natural or herb-based hair care products..if you have no other option but to use store bought shampoo or conditioner, try not to apply them directly on your scalp..also avoid using hot water to wash your hair.
Hope you may get rid from this problem soon…God bless!!

  9. hi swarnashree,
u told that u consulted many doctors..but did u get any tests done..thyroid profile, haemoglobin & blood sugar..?? it is very important to rule out thyroid abnormality, anemia other issues if u hav serious hairfall..!! wot u should do now is consulting a good dermatologist & discuss ur problems & get all the tests done..if evrything is alryt, then focus on taking supplements & a balanced diet…

    hope this helps
