How to make Tinted Lip Balm at Home

Hey everybody,

I’m Surbhi.I am a student and I love makeup!! Recently I’ve become quite obsessed about lip balms, especially the tinted ones  fascinate me a lot.I  love them more than lipsticks and lip glosses because they moisturise my lips. Tinted lip balms give my lip[s some colour and shine.

So here I was looking for reviews of some great tinted lip balms. By chance I came across a page telling me how to make my own tinted lip balm.

Tinted Lip Blam

To start with, I collected the following ingredients:

  • A lipstick of my choice – an old one.I  loved the colour at a time but I don’t use it anymore so thought of experimenting with it!!
  • A jar of Vaseline (you can use a chapstick if you want, it solidifies better!! )
  • Little olive oil
  • An empty jar (its an empty jar of a gloss I used long back)
  • A spatula (you can use anything you want to use for mixing the ingredients) and a plastic bowl

And these were the steps I followed:

In the bowl, I emptied the Vaseline jar( mine wasn’t completely full) and added 2-3 drops of olive oil. Make sure you don’t add lots of oil as it will spoil the consistency – just a few drops.

Then I heated the bowl in the microwave for around 40-60secs.During this step, make sure that you don’t keep it in there for too long. Keep an eye on it and as soon as you feel it has melted, take it out!!

Now I took my old lipstick, cut a small piece of it and added it into the melted Vaseline. I mixed it and again microwaved it for around 15secs.

After taking it out, I mixed it properly and put it in an empty jar.My superlovely brown lip balm was then ready!!
Yippee!!

This was the lipstick I used…

And this is my final product in the jar!!

And this is another one I made using a chapstick instead of Vaseline and I find it better!!

If you want, you can not only use your lipsticks but also your favourite pigments, blush or eyeshadows for this purpose. It is so easy!! And the results are lovely. After melting and mixing, you can also add glitters for shimmer and yau can also add your favourite flavoured essence for the perfect smell and flavour!!

Yippeee! i jus love this thing. Now I don’t need to buy any tinted lip balm because this is super quick and easy!! So here is my 1st blog people and tell me how it was. I am open to all suggestions and criticism. 🙂

PS-This one is not only for the people who just love lip balms n those who want to use their broken lipsticks or try out new colours on their lips. 🙂

I am sure all of us have tried a red lipstick but never used it because of the fear that it looks too bold. So  that red lipstick can now be used by all of us with confidence and grace!! I am yet to try it on my red lipstick. Will post the pic as soon as i do it!!

This is my recent haul after reading various reviews!!

    1. Lol Uzma, what is Irani chai? Ingredients?

I had one funny experience once. We had a ‘Yoga Mess’ In IIT where they served ‘Herbal Tea’ Those days I used to drink 20- 25 glasses of tea in a day and would order anything with ‘tea’ added to the name so ordered this ‘herbal tea.’ Us herbal tea mein saare ghaas phoos ka taste aa gaya but chaai ki patti ka nahin aaya.

Coffee is my wife’s specialty..I am good at making tea. Woh bhi kadak adrak waali. 🙂

  4. Sanjeev ji,
(1)Tea cafes serving Iranian Chai were brought to India by Persian traders. Iranian Chai is a blend of brewed tea leaves, boiled milk and sweetened condensed milk. This kind of tea is available at small and old cafes and is usually served with sweet and salty Osmania biscuits.
    (2) Bun Maska, is buns of soft bread slathered with a generous amount of butter.
    This is how it looks!

  5. OMG!! Bun Maska..I am going to purchase buns tomorrow. I love eating bun that ways. We used to get this in our hostel . Totally forgot about it. :((

    Thankies for reminding. :-* :-*

  6. I bought this MAC tinted lip balm for Rs 870. Feels like a total waste of money. Lotus lip balms are equally good and now this. Thanks for the red tinted lip balm tip. I have a red lipstick which I dont use at all but I can carry of sheer reds. yay!! I’ll make a tinted lip balm out of it. 🙂

    1. mac tinted lip balm…which one? i got one as a free sample 2day…its called fuschia pink! nice..but ur rite its a waste of money 😛 n moreover there can be much more variety in colors this way 😀 😀
tel me when u make a lip balm outta ur red lipstick…m also gonna try it soon… 🙂 as im so scared of wearing a bold red 😀 :rotfl: :rotfl:

      1. yeah that fuchsia pink. It’s pretty but it’s no way better than the nivea star shine lip balm..It’s so expensive just because it’s mac . and my burtbee’s lip balm (thanks Aarthi :-* ) is many times more moisturizing than the Mac Tinted lip balm. grrrrrrr….

    1. hey m glad u liked it 😀 n u tried it too 😀 thats gr8…me too thinkin of cuttin on my red lippy 2day :rotfl: :rotfl:

  7. Wow! this is lovely. I can’t find any brownish tinted lip balms in the market, so will definitely be trying this out. Have decided to tweak the ingredients a bit – lip balm + body oil + lipstick since I don’t have olive oil and don’t want to buy a whole new bottle to use just 2-3 drops.

    1. Emami Vasocare has a brown tinted lip moisturiser in stick form called ‘Sinful Chocolate’ priced at Rs 100. Someone has also done a review on dat. But then, of course, u can try making ur own one. 🙂

I guess we can completely do w/o d oil part, coz once melted, we can simply add lip color str away. I’ll hv to try dat myself.

  8. Wow! This is such a cool trick. Thanx Surbhi. I m definitely gonna try this. Its actually cheap n easy way coz plain lip balms in d mkt r cheaper compared to d tinted ones and we pay a higher price just for d tint! I hv many lipsticks which my sis gave me coz she wasnt using them. So will try with them. 🙂
I actually made candles 2-3 times using d same trick. I had beautiful diyas which were empty after diwali n I had left over candle stubs and spilled over wax from candles. I collected all d wax, heated it in d microwave and poured it in d candles with batti in d middle. And after cooling I had beautiful diyas for d next diwali!

  9. Hey hi
i always wanted a lip balm with a brown tint, and when i saw your idea i found myself lucky. But the lip balm i made hasn’t set yet. I don’t know what i did wrong 🙁
