Tom Ford Velvet Orchid Eau De Parfum Review

Hello Beautiful Ladies,

By Bella V.

Today, I will be providing you with a full fragrance description of the Tom Ford Velvet Orchid Perfume. The perfumes I usually buy are light, fresh and floral. I am a J’adore and Marc Jacobs Daisy kind of girl; always smelling of fresh floral notes. This time I have gone against all norms, shocked myself and purchased the Tom Ford Velvet Orchid and I love it! This is too sweet compared to my usual taste in perfumes, but, blended with the deep floral and citrus notes; it makes for a very attractive scent. The Velvet Orchid is classified under the floral oriental family, but, I’ll tell you how this one is a “not-so-floral” floral perfume. *Pictures are taken by my friend Mekhala Shingre 🙂

Priced at €134 for a 100 ml bottle, it is what you call trop cher. But, I did get a Sephora discount for it. Perks of being a black card member. So yay!

My Thoughts on Tom Ford Velvet Orchid Eau De Parfum:

I am a sucker for fancy packaging. Well, who isn’t? Us girls, we want pretty things, don’t we? The sleek, deep purple, slim bottle is a class apart – 10 points for packaging. That’s the thing about Tom Ford. He always does classy. It’s evident on all his perfume bottles and makeup products.

My fragrance teacher says that fragrances are best understood when associated with a memory or feeling. I am going to describe what I associate this perfume with. I associate it with strength and sensuality. This scent feels creamy, deep, dark and sexy. If Fifty Shades of Grey was a perfume, it would be Tom Ford Velvet Orchid! The scent reminds me of fancy French dinners and two of my favorite food items – chocolates and coconut, especially, coconut.

The Velvet Orchid is a scent that you can identify from a distance. It’s very distinctive and long lasting. It is a strong heady perfume with some mainstream notes such as vanilla, sandalwood, bergamot mixed with Tom Ford’s magical floral blend. The first notes you smell are zesty citrus notes such as Bergamot and Mandarin/Grapefruit, combined with something sweet like liquor chocolate. Upon reading about it, I realized the sweet smell is due to the Rum and Honey in it. As the smells settles down, you are left with notes such as Sandalwood, Vanilla, Aldehyde C-18 (coconut aldehyde) and Turkish rose. Floral notes such a Jasmine, Black orchid, Orchid and Magnolia are lingering.

So, the fragrance composition of the Velvet Orchid can be summed as:

Top notes: Bergamot, Mandarin/grapefruit, Rum, Honey.
Heart notes: Jasmine, Black Orchid, Orchid, Magnolia.
Base notes: Vanilla, Sandalwood, Aldehyde C18, Turkish Rose.

I do not think this is an every day kind of perfume. More like a special scent for a special evening or night out. When you take a look at the Velvet Orchid, you can see that it’s not a regular female fragrance. It’s a fragrance for a BOLD LADY. The scent is mature; possibly why I associate it with strength and sensuality.

Weird fact: Calice becker, the genius perfumer who collaborated to create J’adore (one of my favourite scents), is one of the creators of Velvet Orchid. So, I can see why I instantly liked this scent.

Pros of Tom Ford Velvet Orchid Eau De Parfum:

  • Long lasting.
  • Unique smell.
  • Seductive scent.
  • Classy packaging.
  • Different from the usual floral scents.

Cons of Tom Ford Velvet Orchid Eau De Parfum;

  • Very expensive.
  • Not suitable for people who prefer light scents.

  1. Awesome review Bella and great pics Mekhala 🙂

J’adore and Issey Miyake are my all-time favorite perfumes Bella. Which is your favorite fruity/floral perfume?

  2. Hey! Thanks! 😀 Mine is D&G L’imperatrice and Salvatore Ferrgamo Signorina. You should try. You’d love them both.

  3. So wanna get my hands on this one! I am not a fan of floral perfumes..I prefer musky ones even for the day! I love Gucci Rush though some people say it smells like a cheap prostitute..but I still love it!
