Along with the wonderful results that working out gives to our body shape, health and mental well-being, comes an undesirable result – oily, sweaty, smelly and dirty hair! Shampooing after every workout is not only difficult, but also is not good for your hair’s health. Here are some tips you can incorporate post workout to keep your hair smelling, looking and feeling fresh.

Co-Wash

Co-washing means washing with just a conditioner. Skipping the shampoo and washing with just a conditioner ensures your hair doesn’t get dry as with a shampoo. Since conditioners have cleansing agents in small quantities, they remove away sweat and grime very effectively. The only downside to this is that you need to have time to wash your hair.

Use A Dry Shampoo

This is one of the most widely used methods. Store bought or homemade formulas can be used to absorb excess sweat, oil and grime from the scalp. The only downside to this is that even dry shampooing should be done in moderation.

Wear A Headband

It will absorb all the sweat from your forehead and the back of your neck (the areas where you sweat the most) and this prevents your scalp and hair from getting sweaty. Plus, this also ensures that the sweat mixed with the hair products that you have used, don’t trickle down your face and clog your pores. This is more of a prevention than a cure.

Use A Blow Dryer

For those whose hair doesn’t get very frizzy, this is a good option. Blow drying the hair immediately after working out will dry all the sweat from your scalp and hair. The downside to this method is that people with dry frizzy hair cannot opt for this.

Wash Just The Front Hairline

Since shampooing the whole hair is what takes up all our time, a good option is to just shampoo the front portion of our scalp over the wash basin. We majorly sweat in that region and this will fix majority of your woes.

Use Anti-Bacterial Refreshing Wipes

Run the wipes over your scalp and this will kill any odor causing bacteria that can thrive in the sweaty environment. Plus, this will also give a refreshing smell.

Use Tea Tree, Peppermint or Lemon Oil

They are all antibacterial & anti-fungal and will thus prevent any fungus or bacteria from growing on the scalp. Mix a few drops into a spray bottle with some water and spritz it onto your scalp. This is a really good option if you are prone to dandruff. Like the above tip, this also provides a refreshing after smell.

You may need a combination of these tips to address all your concerns. Experiment and decide what works best for you! 🙂

  1. I really like the idea of washing just front hairline and using anti bacterial wipes. These were much needed since I have oily scalp and frizz prone hair, can’t use dry shampoos.
