10 Foundation Basics That’ll Change Every Beginner’s Makeup Game

By Chanchala Bose

Hello IMBBians!
Here I am with yet another, very different and yet much required post. This is about foundations. We all might not use foundations daily but definitely pat some on for parties. But, if you want to get it right each time, make sure you are aware of these basics!
10 Foundation Basics Every Beginner Must Know

1. Type of foundations

There are different types of foundations available in the market. So, make sure you know what all those are meant for. You have cream foundations, pressed powder, liquid, mineral powder and gel.

2. The right shade

Well, this is the tricky one. Choosing the correct shade is very essential. When you are at the store, you can not apply foundation on your entire face. So, you must apply foundation on your jaw line. But one more tip – ask the SA to apply on your face. Spend some time outside the mall in sunlight. Move inside the mall for some time. Leave it on for 1-2 hours or even more. This will give you more time to judge the shade. Checking shade under natural light is definitely crucial.

3. Right foundation as per your skin type

I am sure you know the correct foundation as per your skin type. If you have a dry skin, like me, then use cream based or liquid foundations. Whereas if you have oily or combination skin, then pressed powder or compacts are best for you.

4. Foundations as per season type

You must upgrade your foundations as per the season. Like, in winters, you must go with cream based foundations, whereas in summers you can easily go with pressed or compacts. Also, in case of sweaty rains or humid weather, go for powder ones which will prevent sweat for longer time.

5. What kind of skin you have

No, this is not a repeated point! This one has more to do with your skin’s age. If you have a matured skin, then you should go for the long staying ones which will reduce the appearance of fine lines. If you have sensitive skin, then go for silicon free formula and the ones which target for acne prone skin and will cover your scars too.

6. Prep your skin

Prepping your skin is the most important part when it comes to foundations. Always begin with a clean, well moisturized face. And, finish it with a good makeup setting spray.

7. Foundation direction

Always try to apply your foundation in downward, and never upwards strokes. Applying it downwards will give a streak-free look and will make your facial hair less prominent.

8. Always use powder

Now, you might be thinking why should dry skinned girls use powder? So women with dry skin need not apply a powder, but it is necessary for the t-zone. This is the area where we all sweat and the area where the foundation starts to appear discoloured.

9. Always start from the middle

Your t-zone is the most red area and thus needs maximum coverage. So, it’s always advisable to begin with your t-zone and then blend outwards and downwards.

mix and match foundations

10. Mix and match foundations

The skin colour of the jaw line is completely different from the one on your face. So, in such case you can use two different types of foundations. But, this trick takes a lot of practice. Also, if you are not able to find your perfect match in one shade, you can pick the lighter and darker one, and match them.
