Preeti P. asks:
Hello ,
I purchased the Lotus Purestay range foundation. Although the shade I chose is right, my face looks ashy on applying, not whitish, it looks ashy. I have oily skin and so I don’t need a moisturiser beneath foundation . Which other foundation can I try ? Are BB creams or tinted moisturisers a better alternative ? I hate the ashy effect Lotus Purestay range foundation gives me. Please help.

You should try a color neutraliser/corrector in peach…
I don;t get that ashy effect with Lotus Purestay foundation, it works perfectly for me. However, you can try MAC fluid foundation because there are so many shades available or Clinique’s Superbalanced foundation
Thanks Jomol 🙂 can you please tell me price of these MAC and Clinique products ?
Preeti, Clinique Superbalanced costs Rs. 1900 for 30 ml.

personally bb creams dont work for me, they look white and ashy on me
lotus works fine for me 🙂
you can try Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24H foundation, it is matte, waterproof and smudge-proof and you wont feel as if you’re wearing a foundation! trust me! and you will find a perfect match as well.. it is the most light-weight foundation I’ve ever used, it costs Rs 2800/-
Preeti, the reason the foundation can look ashy is:
1. incorrect shade – I hope you tested the product on face/jawline, instead of hand. Also, you have to wait for the foundation to settle on your face (get warmed by your body heat) – as certain foundatains tends to oxidise resukting in a different shade to the one you thought you had applied.
2. High SPF content – it can give a white cask/ashy effect
3. The most common reason I have personally encountered for ashy effect – with both foundation/concealer is that my skin is Yellow toned, and if the foundation/concealer are pink toned (instaed of yellow) – it results in a ashy look.
I would say, go with Jomol’s advice – try the MAC foundation. I do not know how much Lotus one costs, but even if MAC one is a little higher in price, a good base pretty much takes care of 60% of your makeup needs.
Also, for the oily T-zone – try a primer.

Hi Preeti 🙂
I would like to address the myth about oily skin not needing moisturiser first. Oily skin needs hydration just like any other skin type and if left dehydrated it gets the message to secrete even more oil (sebum), therefore, you should make sure that you hydrate your skin using a moisturiser suitable for your skin type. There are a gazillion variety of water based moisturisers in the market these days. I found Clean & Clear daily wear moisturiser really effective without being over priced.
Also, dehydrated skin does not absorb makeup well and foundations do not blend easily which might be another reason for the skin to look ashy.
KK’s advice is very well summed up and I totally agree with it as I went through a lot of struggles myself before landing plop! on the right shade of foundation and yes it is a MAC Studio Fix Fluid foundation…..they have so many shades that you will definitely find one that is perfect for you. It is currently prized at Rs. 1,800 for 30 ml and will easily last you a year or so if you use it only on occasional basis. I hope you find yours soon 🙂
Take care!!
Thanks a lot everyone for answering my query 🙂
