Today is high-end lipstick day. I just reviewed the Burberry Lip Velvet in the shade “Oxblood” for you and now it is time for a Dior lipstick! I love Dior perfumes, but have rarely used Dior lipsticks. I have always thought of the brand as someone who catered more to fair to light skin tone. I remember my first high-end makeup product was a eye, face and lip palette from Dior from the Duty Free. Though I loved owning a Dior product, my naïve self never understood why any of the products did not look flattering on me. It took me a long time to realize that the same was because, it was more fitting for Caucasian skin. Which was a bit of a bummer considering how much I had spent on the product. But, that is the harsh reality. Over the years, I have tried a few more things from Dior but apart from the perfumes, nothing that I repurchased. Let’s see if that changes with this lipstick!

Suggested Usage:
-Start by lining the lips with Dior Contour.
-For perfectly even results, then apply lipstick with the Backstage Lip Brush working from the center of the lips outwards.
-For a bolder finish, apply the lipstick directly on the lips.

My Experience with Dior Rouge Dior 999 Matte:
Packaging: Dior lipstick comes packaged in a black case with silver detailing which has the Dior cannage as a ring towards the bottom. The shade name and number is written on the bottom, difficult to read, though. There is no colour indicator. Love the fact that it does not attract any fingerprints. It comes packaged in a black cardboard box.
Shade: The shade, 999 is an iconic shade in the Dior line and is also known as the Dior Red. It is available in lipstick format – in matte, in satin and even in liquid finish and also as a nail paint. The shade 999 in the revamped Dior Rouge line is an ode to the very first Red lipstick created by the House of Dior – the number 9 and later released as the number 99. The Dior Red is supposed to be the right kind of shade, one that every woman can wear. But, is there really a single Red which can work for all skin tones? Wouldn’t that Red have to be an extremely neutral shade of Red? The shade in question is a medium, neutral to slightly warm toned red and surprise! surprise!…it does look stunning! I am surprised how good it looks on! Don’t believe me? Check the pics. Yes, it could really be a shade which would flatter all skin tones!
Texture: The texture of the Dior Rouge Matte took me by surprise. The texture feels lightweight and slides smoothly over the lips without too much slip. However, despite being matte, it did not tug or pull the lips while applying. Once on, it took a few minutes, post which it became almost transfer-proof. It wasn’t kiss-proof, but it did not seem to transfer at all. With all this, I kind of expected it to start feeling dry and tight after about an hour or so. But was very surprised to find that the lipstick was not drying at all. It was fairly comfortable to wear, though I wouldn’t call it hydrating. But then, I don’t expect a matte formula to be hydrating. Even when layered, it doesn’t feel cakey or heavy. The product adheres wells to the lips.
Pigmentation: Pigmentation is good but not fully opaque in a single swipe. You need to build it over a couple of strokes. The good thing is that the shade applies with an even distribution of pigment.
Lasting Power: The lipstick gives you about 8 hours of wear, post which it leaves a prominent red stain – which could give you another couple of hours of looking put together. However, it falls way short of company’s claim of 16 hours of wear. Like I have said a million times, sometimes brands just set themselves up to fail! 8 hours of wear would be excellent and would give the shade a fantastic rating – if it wasn’t for this claim – which realistically, no lipstick can really live up to. As the lipstick start to wear off, it does so evenly, without getting or looking patchy.
Fragrance: There is a strong fragrance – not surprising, considering that Dior is also a perfume house. But the fragrance is not very pleasant to my nose. It isn’t too bad while applying, but when I put my nose to it – I did sharply draw back!!

Pros of Dior Rouge Dior 999 Matte:
- A bold and beautiful RED.
- Lightweight texture.
- Good pigmentation.
- Very comfortable to wear with no feeling of dryness or clinginess.
- Easy to apply and get clean lines.
- Applies smoothly and evenly.
- No feathering or bleeding.
- Luxe packaging.
- Good wear time.
Cons of Dior Rouge Dior 999 Matte:
- Despite having excellent wear time, the product falls short of the company’s claim of 16 hours!!
