ELF Cosmetics Hits and Misses – Part 1

ELF Hits & Misses – Part 1

Hello everyone! I’m here today to do my second ELF post. I wanted to talk about all the ELF products I’ve ever tried, and tell which ones I think are worth it and which products are worth passing! As many of you may know, ELF products are very hit or miss. Sometimes, the quality really reflects the $1 price and what you get is really disappointing. However, other products seem like they should be worth way more than $1 and may even become a must-have in your makeup collection! In Part 1, I’ll go over the eye and lip products I’ve tried so far.

EYE PRODUCTS:

Eyeliner – MISS!

What ELF says: Gel-powder formulation infused with skin soothers instantly brightens and glides on smoothly without tugging the delicate eye area.

Directions: Hold upper or lower lid gently. Glide on liner.

Ingredients: Paraffinum Liquidum, Ceresine Wax ,  Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Synthetic Beeswax, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Rhus Succedanea Cera, Stearic Acid, Petrolatum, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Isopropyl, Myristate, Butylene/Ethylene Copolymer, Iron Oxides(CI 77491, CI77492, CI77499), Manganese Violet (CI77742), Mica (CI77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI77891), Yellow No. 5 Lake (CI19140), Red No. 40 Lake (CI16035), Ultramarine Violet (CI77077), Blue No. 1 Lake (CI42090)

What I think: There are 5 different shades of eyeliner, and I have only tried Noire (black). I would not recommend this eyeliner. It starts out rather hard and you have to test it on your hand a few times for it to soften up. It glides on smoothly enough and the color is decent, however, it smudges like crazy on me so fast! Definitely not a long lasting eyeliner… might give you raccoon eyes!

Brightening Eye Color – HIT!

ELF brightening Eye Colour

What ELF says: Luxuriously smooth, corn silk formula provides eyes with a neutral base and an awakened brightness. The formula blends into skin for a long lasting, beautiful effect. The 4 color quad allows for both natural and dramatic looks. Mirror in compact included.

Directions: Apply to upper lid; gently glide on powder. Blend as desired.

Ingredients: Talc, Mica, Zinc Stearate, Kaolin, Paraffinium Liquidu(Mineral Oil), Petrolatum, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, MethylParaben, Propylparaben, Iron Oxides (CI 77491 , CI 77492 , CI 77499), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Yellow No.5 Lake (CI 19140), Red No.40 Lake (CI 16035), Ultramarine Violet (CI 77077), Blue No.1 Lake (CI 42090)

What I think about ELF brightening Eye Colour: I adore these eye shadow quads! I have Butternut, Drama, Nymph Dreams, Day 2 Night, and Brownstone (last three not available on ELF India website). Some people might be wary to buy these quads because they think the quality will be really poor for so cheap. I must say that I think the quality is outstanding for the price. However, I should note that the quality can differ with these quads. For example, my Drama quad is SUPER pigmented, buttery soft, smooth, applies like a dream, and lasts all day. However my Butternut quad is hard, not too pigmented, chalky, and fades quickly. I think some quads might just be lemons. The other quads I have all have excellent pigmentation and texture. I think they darker shades can do well on their own, but it’s better to use these shadows with a primer for maximum pigmentation. I love these for the price!

Duo Eyeshadow Cream – MISS!

ELF Duo Eyeshadow Cream
What ELF says:
Express yourse.l.f. with the easy to blend, crease resistant, creamy duo eye shadow colors. Each gorgeous shade can be worn alone or together for a dramatic effect. The soft-blending formula can also be layered under powder eye shadow to set the color in and keep it lasting vibrant all day.

Directions: Apply shadow to upper eyelid, blending in the lighter shade to illuminate and the darker shade for contouring and lining to achieve desired effect.

Ingredients: Isopropyl Palmitate, Paraffinium Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Petrolatum, Ceresin Wax, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Mica, Synthetic Beeswax, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, BHT, Iron Oxides (CI 77491 , CI 77492 , CI 77499), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891) Yellow No.5 Lake (CI 19140), Red No.40 Lake (CI 16035) Ultramarine Violet (CI 77077), Blue No.1 Lake (CI 42090)

What I think ELF Duo Eyeshadow Cream: I have this in Sugar Cookie (not available on ELF India website) and I would not recommend this product. The color barely shows up at all and it just ends up looking like a shimmery mess. It is sticky and smelly and creases easily and just feels plain gross on eyelids. I thought of using this as an eyeshadow base, but the texture is just so tacky and it creases so fast that I don’t even want to try. I would pass on this product.

LIP PRODUCTS:

Moisture Care Lip Color – HIT!

ELF Moisture Care Lip Colour

What ELF says: True color therapy is here. Intensive hydrating agents along with natural pigments leave lips with long-lasting color and moisture. This luscious liquid lipstick creates wearable color that flatters a multitude of skin tones and looks.

Directions: To activate twist pen 10-20 times or until color is seen. Layer on color. Reapply anytime.
Ingredients: Paraffinum Liquidum, Polybutene, Silica, Synthetic Beeswax Fragrance, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Iron Oxides(CI 77499), Red No. 7 Calcium Lake(CI 15850:1), Red No. 6 Barium Lake(CI 15850:2), Blue No.1 Aluminum Lake(CI 42090:2), Red No.40 Aluminum Lake(CI 16035), Red No.27 Aluminum Lake(CI 45410:2)

What I think about ELF Moisture Care Lip Colour: I have this in Baby Lips, Natural Blush, and Perfect Pink (last one not available on ELF India website). You do need to twist it at least 20 times to get the color flowing, which kind of makes you feel like there’s barely any product in the tube… but for so cheap, I can’t complain. I really like the texture of these lip glosses. They are slightly tacky but not overly sticky and feel moisturizing and comfy on lips. I like to use these glosses as an overnight lip treatment actually. I find that they leave my lips softer and smoother in the morning. The pigmentation varies. Baby Lips is really sheer but a pretty baby pink. Natural blush… I don’t like very much but it is very pigmented. It’s kind of a dusty mauve shade. Perfect Pink is very bright pink but sort of sheer and makes my lips look red. All the shades are really shiny though. And for the way it feels on my lips, I think it is worth it!

Super Glossy Lip Shine SPF 15 – MISS!

Super Glossy Lip Shine SPF 15

What ELF says: This Super Glossy SPF 15 formula fights environmental damage while leaving your lips with a healthy glossy glow. The delicious flavor and sweet scent will leave you licking your lips in delight! The perfect on the go tube that is mess proof for anywhere

Ingredients: Paraffinum Liquidum, Polybutene, Silica, Fragrance, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Benzophenone-3, Ethylhexyl, Methoxycinnamate, Titanium Dioxide, Red No.7, Calcium Lake(CI 15850:1), Red No.6 Barium Lake (CI 15850:2), Red No.27 Aluminum Lake(CI 45410:2), Red No.40 Aluminum Lake(CI 16035), Blue No.1 Aluminum Lake(CI 42090:2), Iron Oxide(CI 77499).

What I think about Super Glossy Lip Shine SPF 15: I hear some people rave about these glosses… I hear some people say the pigmentation is great and whatnot. However, I don’t feel the same. Maybe my gloss was just bad but I personally wouldn’t recommend this gloss. I have this in the shade Candlelight, and it is very pretty in the tube and on lips, but it just is SO sticky and thick. It feels gross on lips. It also smells sickly sweet and it also burned my lips for some reason. Needless to say, I was not fond of this at all. 🙁

Therapeutic Conditioning Balm – MISS!

ELF Lip Balm

What ELF says: Salvation for parched lips. This innovative lip balm coats lips with natural nutrients and skin soothers to condition even the most sensitive lips. Infused with Shea Butter and Vitamins A & E for long lasting protection.

Directions: Twist up bottom. Massage balm into lips. Allow excess to absorb into skin.

Ingredients: Paraffinium Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Polyisobutene, Silica, Synthetic Beeswax, Fragrance(Aroma), Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Iron Oxides (CI 77491 , CI 77492 , CI 77499), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Mica (CI 77019), Red No.6 Lake (CI 15850), Red No.7 Lake (CI 15850), Red No.28 Lake (CI 45410), Blue No.1 Lake (CI 42090), Yellow No.5 Lake (CI 19140), Yellow No.6 Lake (CI 15985)

What I think ELF Lip Balm: I have this in Strawberry Crème. It is cute and smells nice enough, but I don’t think it’s all that great. The packaging is flimsy too. If you’ve ever heard of making your own lip balm with Crisco & Koolaid, I think this product is what it would feel/taste like. It goes on smoothly but kind of feels like you’re smoothing grease onto your lips. It does moisturize but I think there are many other inexpensive balms out there that work and feel way better than this one!

So, I hope these reviews were helpful to anyone wanting to try ELF products and not knowing which products are worth it or not. However, everyone is different so you may have better luck with a product I didn’t like. Still, I would really recommend the Brightening Eye Color and Moisture Care Lip Color!

ELF Hits & Misses Part 2 will consist of face products, nail products, and tools! Stay tuned. 🙂

  1. You know I have a high shine lip gloss from TBS, quite similar to these elf ones. Honestly I am not liking them. they are so thick and I am not a gloss person as it is. All the high shine things are not for me.

But thanks for the post, Erynn. Would be very heplful while shopping stuff from ELF. 🙂

    1. The High Shine lip glosses are so thick aren’t they? I have trouble putting them on and spreading them evenly and I don’t like the way they feel on my lips.

  2. That was a very good post. In my opinion the following products are good for what they cost(atleast worth a try).

    – Elf High defnition powder
    – Elf lash and brow clear gel
    – Drama quad
    – Hollywood false lashes kit(i bought it for the stand that it comes with) And i would recommend this for the beginners.
    – Fire Coral lip gloss
    – Watermelon spf 15 lip gloss
    – Lash curlers
    – Tweezers
    – Boosters in spotlight and camilia

Definite misses for me so far are:

    – Colour correctors (both in cream and powser).
    – Eye shadow stick

Have ordered some more products and fingers crossed.. 🙂

  3. Thank you.I have been wanting to try ELF for quite sometime. I now know what to purchase & what not 🙂
btw, are the elf nail polishes worth trying?

  4. well those brightening eye colors the shades avaailble in india are not good
    sorry to disagree
i have luxe which is okay to good
i have nuetrals…thats chalk trust me
i have butternut half shades are okay rest are awful
and the creamy eye shadow i have in olive is above average and better than brigtening quads….
heard a lot about their lip glosses too
but this is my opinion….the eye shadows are chalky

    1. I do think the quality of those eyeshadows are inconsistent 🙁 For the most part, I’ve gotten good ones though. Luck, maybe? I think mostly the darker shades like dark brown, charcoal, black are really pigmented, and the bright colors like turquoise, pink, and purple are really pigmented. But the more neutral colors like you said are really chalky 🙁
.-= Erynn´s last blog ..HURR DID- Another Angled Bob &amp Bangs – =-.

  5. Hi Erynn… Nice reviews!!!

  7. I recently used elf eye liner and after a couple hours felt my eyes start to sting intensively. I had just bought it so I knew it could not be the problem of sharing makeup. After a couple days my eyes were huge and swollen and stinging like crazy. I tried everything; pink eye crème (which made it worse) warm compressions, cold compressions, but nothing helped. I emailed elf customer service 5 times in a week and got no reply. I called corporate office and any other number I could find on the internet and only spoke to robots. This product had the worse customer service I have ever heard of. I was not going to blame elf for my problem I just wanted a solution, but I was obviously not important enough for them to even call me back. I later found out that I could have gone mildly blind but I had not only because I found a cure myself. Great help elf, next time this will be a legal problem.

  8. This post was really too helpful and encouraging for college goers who r new bee into makeup..bt anyone can u pls. Help where can I buy or ordr them in India..

  9. This is a really informative post. I like how you included what e.l.f. said and what you actually think! Honestly, I just love that they’re products are so affordable. It’s great for girls that are just starting out with their makeup obsession. My favorite e.l.f. product has to be their Makeup Mist & Set. I actually wrote a review on it if you wanna check it out!! http://www.tinizine.com/2011/09/review-e-l-f-makeup-mist-set/ 😀

  10. I used several e.l.f products for myself and endorsement models I work with. the products’ performance is somehow affected by the skin type, I guess, for some really works for me (I have normal skin) but doesn’t work for the model who has dry or sensitive skin.
Personally, I’d like to recommend the LBB palette. I own the palette in Cool & Warm shades. they do wonders to most skin type, particularly after the application of eyeshadow base (I use the NYX one hehe). with proper application, the colors blend well & don’t fall out easily, and there are a lot of colors to play with. I like the shimmery tones, because they’re very nicely pigmented. the matte ones, like some other women might have said, aren’t as quite pigmented. but they’re okay afterall. I also love the Luscious Lipstick. I own it in Cherry Tart (deep red) and it suits my skin tone, even though it wasn’t as deep-red as I expected when I ordered it, so basically I can wear it to campus or casual occasions.
I wouldn’t recommend the eyeliners, except the gel liner, because they don’t stay long (proven only for 6hrs before they fade) and smudge easily. also the Matte Lipstick, it’s a bit too thick and chalky on the lips.
