Face: Skin Whitening Products

Since skin ‘whitening’ has become such an infamous word and whitening products are turning up to be disasters and causing side effects, I have turned to skin ‘brightening’ and that too the natural way. I have found out a few ways to brighten and polish the complexion instead of using Lotus Ginseng type fairness creams. So, here you go with some herbal and natural ways to tone up and clarify your skin.

1. Kumkumadi Tailam/ Thailam

kumkumadi thailamKumkumadi Tailam/ Thailam is an ancient recipe consisting of 16 precious Ayurvedic ingredients as detailed in the ancient texts of beauty secrets.  Kumkumadi thailam is the high quality saffron oil.  It contains Jasadbhasma, an Ayurvedic sunscreen, known to protect the skin from the sun’s darkening and damaging UV rays. Saffron saturates the skin to give it a natural golden glow.  Lotus, sandalwood, and vetiver plump the skin, diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while extracts of Indian Madder and Banyan tree lighten the appearance of brown spots caused by acne scarring, the sun or aging. Licorice, known for its antiseptic and microbial properties helps to protect blemish-prone skin from bacteria and other impurities.

kumkumadi thailam oilWhere Can You Buy Kumkumadi Thailam?

You can find this tailam in all ayurvedic shops.

What Does Kumkumadi Thailam Do for Skin Whitening?

• Kumkumadi tailam adds radiance to the skin.
• It brightens the skin.
• Removes acne scars, blemishes, scars, and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.
• Since this is an ayurvedic product, it has no side effects.

2. Kasturi Manjal with Mil Cream or Rose Water

kasturi manjal

Kasthuri manjal – Curcuma aromatica – This “cosmetic manjal” is often boiled, dried and powdered to use for external application to the skin. It makes a wonderful skin rejuvenative for skin whitening when used in fresh or raw from in face pack. Kasthuri manjal grows larger than normal haldi used in curries, is lighter in color, more aromatic and has a thinner skin. Unlike Curcuma longa (used in curries), Kasthuri manjal won’t stain the skin yellow.

Kasturi Manjal is used to cure leprosy, skin disease, insect bites and imparts glow to the skin. Applying on the body before bath is a good preventive measure against skin diseases and for a glowing skin.

It also helps to restore or maintain youth by controlling wrinkle and crease formation on the surface of the skin. Turmeric can also benefit skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis and acne.

How to Use Kasturi Manjal for Skin Whitening

People with dry skin can use kasturi manjal with milk cream and let it dry before bath.  Oily skin people can use either rose water or water to make a mixture.

Where Can You Buy Kasturi Manjal

kasturi manjal packedKasturi manjal or raw manjal can be bought from vegetable shops or can be bought in powdered and packed forms in supermarkets and beauty shops.

Raw turmeric can also be used in face packs.

3. Black Grapes Face Mask

black grapes face mask
Grape seeds contain resveratrol, flavonoid and tannin which are excellent anti-oxidants for skin whitening. Such anti-oxidant from fruits is good at toning and tightening skin. Skin of black grape comprises most of the nutrients of a grape. Generally speaking, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron and vitamin B1, B2, B6 and C are major nutrients of grapes. There is also a huge amount of amino acids contained in grapes. Amino acid is essential building blocks for proteins and hence body cells.

How to Use Black Grapes as a Face Mask for Skin Whitening

I usually like to make black grapes juice at home. After extracting juice, I get the pulp containing skin of grapes and seeds.  Since these contain high amount of iron, vitamins, and antioxidants, I use this pulp directly on to my skin without adding anything to it.  It refreshes, tones, and rejuvenates the skin and helps in lightening the skin tone also. One thing to be careful is that broken grape seeds can be “abrasive” and you have to be very careful and try not to rub like a scrub.

4. Milk Powder and Fuller’s Earth Face Pack

milk powder fuller's earth face mask
Multani Mitti is called as Fuller’s earth and it makes an excellent cleansing mask and possesses highly absorbent qualities. It is rich in minerals and when applied to the skin in the form of a paste, it helps improve circulation.  Milk powder is believed to bring on lightening effects on the skin. Some people suggest using hydrogen peroxide with milk powder, but I am not pro-hydrogen peroxide with milk powder because it tends to darken skin.

How to Use Milk Powder and Fuller’s Earth Face Pack for Skin Whitening

Make a paste of milk powder and fuller’s earth separately and then mix them together with honey and apply on face.  As usual, clean after it starts to dry and don’t rub it vigorously while taking off with water.  Honey and lemon juice mixed with almond oil and milk powder is also a good bleaching pack.

5. Ubtan

ubtanUbtan, the world’s first known skin whitening product, is a body application used for the beautification of the body. I searched a lot for simple ubtan recipes, but apparently there are many recipes for different needs; however, I could find the two most common recipes that are used on brides before the marriage ceremony.  Here are the two recipes:

Bridal Full Body General Beauty Massage Ubtan Recipe

Ingredients
4 Tbsp. Chickpea Flour
2 Tbsp. Almond Oil
1 Tsp. Turmeric
1 Tsp. Fenugreek Powder
1 Tsp. Wheat Germ Oil
1/4 Tsp. Rose Oil

Method
Mix all ingredients. It is recommended to do the ubtan body scrub every day for 40 days. Use the ubtan scrub to massage the entire body. After the massage take a warm shower to remove. Make a fresh batch each morning.

Bridal Facial Massage Ubtan Recipe

Ingredients
1 Tbsp. Almond Paste
1 Tbsp. Cashew Paste
1-1/2 tsp. Pistachio Paste
1 Tbsp. Malai (skim off boiled milk)
1 Tbsp. Wheat Germ Oil
1 Tbsp. Rose Water
1/4 cup Red Lentil paste
Chickpea flour (to thicken)

Method
Grind the nuts in a blender on high until pulverized, then add remaining ingredients. Use as a facial massage. Let dry then wash it off. Pat face dry with a clean towel.

6. Dried Orange Peels with Multani Mitti, Honey and Lemon

dried orange peel

Orange peel face mask with multani mitti, honey, and lemon removes tan and brightens skin tone.  I used to have this orange peel face mask regularly as a teenager to control acne also.  For this face pack, you need to dry orange peels directly under the sun and powder them and mix it with multani mitti and honey.  You can store the multani mitti and orange peel stored in container and it won’t get spoiled for a long time.  Orange peel powder with multani mitti helps to reduce excess oil from the skin and clean dead cells making the skin appear brighter.  The honey in the pack will keep the skin from drying.

7. Oatmeal and Tomato Face Pack

oatmeal

I had seen this skin whitening face pack’s recipe in Rads blog. Although its quite messy, the end result is smoother and brighter skin.  You can check out the recipe here.

Tomato acts as a natural bleaching agent which of course wouldn’t give you any side effects.  Oatmeal removes dead skin cells doing gentle exfoliation without making the skin dry and is known for its moisturizing properties.

8. Papaya and Honey

papaya honey face mask

I love everything that has papaya in it.  Papaya is an excellent source of vitamin A, E, C and antioxidants.  Papaya has become known as a leading ingredient in skin whitening products because papaya has a natural enzyme called papain, which promotes skin renewal and cell turnover. It helps in exfoliating the skin to reveal newer cells, and has restorative properties that soften the skin.  Papaya can be used with honey to get a clean, smooth, and radiant looking skin.  My skin responds best with this face pack.

9. Rakthachandan (Red Sandalwood)

red sandalwood

Red sandalwood is extensively used in Ayurvedic preparations for skin whitening and removing scars. It is an astringent and a cooling agent and is used in several skincare preparations. It is used in the treatment of pimples, acne, wrinkles etc. It is a bit difficult to find this wood. Nowadays, packaged red sandalwood powder is available at all places.

How to Use Rakthachandan for skin Whitening

Rakht chandan

Rakhtchandan

If you can get your hands on Rakthachandan bark, then it should be scraped on a stone to get a pasty red substance, which can be applied on the face directly.  Powdered rakthachandan can be mixed with water or rosewater and applied on face to get a brighter and clear skin.

    1. Sonam my sister used it for a while..she used it instead of her regular night-time moisturizer. For a while it seemed like her skin was looking good, but I think it’s best used once you have sorted out any active acne problems and then use this only for dealing with marks left behind. It is an oil and is a bit greasy..so I would really not recommend it for anyone who have an ongoing acne problem. ?:)

        1. Oh nooo Sonam..it is very good..for marks..and my sister’s skin looked so good…but she had not really solved her acne problem…should solve that first and use this for the marks.

  23. I have used banjara’s kasturi turmeric and I must warn that it simply yellows the skin and does nothing….at least this was my experience….I found it to be a horrible product……

  24. I wish we Indian women would learn to accept our skin tones & be pleased with who we are. As a race we are among the most beautiful women in the world, yet we jeopardize our health & beauty by trying out all sorts of bleaching techniques due to our obsession with “fairness”. Can’t we move past this & into actually appreciating ourselves for who we are instead of being fettered by our insecurities with skin color?

I’m an NC 50 in MAC, refuse to try to whiten my skin & my husband thinks I’m beautiful the way I am 🙂

  25. I have tried kumkumkadi thailam and it didnt work as there were lot of swelling on my face when ever i tried it.
