Fenty Beauty Precision Makeup Sponge Review

Hey gorgeous gals,

Taking a quick break from lipsticks to review a makeup tool for a change. Today’s review is on the Precision Makeup Sponge by Fenty Beauty. I have been using it for over a month now. So, let’s find out how this one performs.

Fenty Beauty Precision Makeup Sponge

Product Description:
A three-sided makeup sponge designed without latex—perfect for applying and blending all formulas.

What it does:
Know how to play all your angles. This plush, three-sided makeup sponge takes blending to the next level with triple-threat precision. Use the slanted edge for controlled stippling, the mini-moon edge for targeted coverage (perfect for the under eyes), and the rounded end for all-over buffing. No matter the formula—liquid, cream, or powder—the Precision Makeup Sponge lets you customize your coverage as it delivers fast, easy, seamless results every time.

It is formulated without parabens, sulfates, and phthalates. Rihanna wanted to ensure the texture and bounce of the sponge was just right, and that the angles were perfect for both buffing all over and getting into the difficult corners of the face.

Fenty Beauty is 100 percent cruelty-free.
Price:
$16 ($4 cheaper than the HG of makeup sponges – the Beauty Blender).

My Experience with Fenty Beauty Precision Makeup Sponge:

Packaging:  The product comes packaged in a cellophane pack encased in a cardboard box with the typical graffiti print.

Shape: First things first – despite the name, the product is definitely lacking in “precision”. Have a look at the pictures – the sponge has 3 distinct sides:
the curved surface – similar to the original Beauty Blender.
the flat surface – similar to the RT Miracle sponge.
A quarter moon edge – similar to absolutely no other popular sponge! 😉

Size: I had been using the Real Techniques Miracle sponge for quite some time. In comparison, the Fenty Beauty one seemed quite small, but when I compared it to my Beauty Blender – the size of the Precision Sponge is exactly the same when dry. And when it is wet, it too swells up – just like the Original Beauty Blender.

Texture:  The sponge, when used damp, is extremely soft. I am going to go out on a limb and say that it might be even softer than the Beauty Blender – and that is unheard off. However, it may not be a good thing…I’ll come to that in a minute.

Usage:
Can be used wet or dry

Experience: First, let us discuss using the sponge keeping in mind the different shapes. The rounded portion works fine – we have been using it with the Beauty Blender for a while now – no complaint there! The flat side is actually an advantage over Beauty Blender – and is very reminiscent of the Real Techniques (RT) Miracle Sponge. I have been partial to the RT sponge for this reason because I do prefer the flat surface it offers for blending in the foundation. The third surface – the mini Moon edge seems fairly pointless (pun-intended!!) Most sponges out there have a pointed tip because it really does help in getting into the nooks and crannies of the face, especially the under eye area. However, the Fenty Precision sponge does not have it and have a mini half moon shape instead which doesn’t work as well as a pointed edge would. You really need a pointed edge for “precision”!! Sometimes you are left asking – why fix something which isn’t broken? And the answer better not be – Well, for the heck of it!!

Coming back to the softness of the sponge – I feel that once damp, it is actually even more softer than the Beauty Blender. However, like I said earlier- it isn’t necessarily a good thing. I get the distinct feeling that I end up using at least one extra pump of foundation when applying with this sponge. It seems to soak up the product. So, as a remedy, what I end up doing is applying foundation with my fingers or with a flat paddle brush and then using the sponge to just blend it in. This is a technique which is used by some professional MUAs for a flawless finish. And the sponge does work – the end result – whether you apply foundation directly with it or blend already applied foundation with it – in either case is flawless. However, both scenarios aren’t really ideal because neither am I agreeable to lose my $50foundation into the sponge; nor am I agreeable to use another tool (a brush) for application because then, I need to increase my application time and also have one more thing to wash!!

You can use the sponge for application of your liquid or cream base products; cream blushes and highlighter and even your loose powder (soft application or baking).

I keep the sponge clean by washing it with the Beauty Blender solid. One thing which I notice when every time I wash it – and from the first time I washed it (before using it) – it feels slimy when being washed. I thought it would go away with regular washing – it hasn’t! It kind of irks me.

To sum this up for you:

Pros of Fenty Beauty Precision Makeup Sponge:

  • Easy to use, even by a makeup beginner.
  • One tool, multiple uses.
  • Gives absolutely beautiful, flawless foundation application.
  • Applies cream blush effectively.
  • Soft on skin.
  • Gives more control over the application.
  • Portability for travel.
  • Softer than Beauty Blender.

Cons of Fenty Beauty Precision Makeup Sponge:

  • The “precision” pointed end is missing.
  • Eats up the product to a certain extent.
  • Feels slimy while washing.

IMBB Rating:
3.5/5

When it coms to any new makeup sponge – we instantly compare to the BeautyBlender because it is pretty much the benchmark for standard of what we need from a makeup sponge and most sponges fail due to the lack of softness. While the Fenty Precision Sponge measures up in softness, I cannot ignore the other cons because they are substantial for me.
Would I Repurchase Fenty Beauty Precision Makeup Sponge?
While the sponge is ever so slightly cheaper than the Beauty Blender, I do not think that I will repurchase. I’d rather pay the couple of bucks extra and get the Beauty Blender instead.
