Kat Von D Shade + Light Eye Contour Quad – Sage Review

Hello everyone,

I am a huge fan of Kat Von D’s makeup line. I have had a great experience with all of her eyeshadows including the original Shade + Light eye palette. So, when she released these new shade + light eye quads, having high hopes, I got them as soon as I could.  This review will be on the Kat Von D Shade + Light eye contour quad in “Sage.”

What it does:  Step up your contoured eye looks with the Shade + Light Eye Contour Quad. Featuring four specially curated palettes with matte shades, these quads spotlight Kat Von D’s high pigment, silky, and blendable eye shadows in a covetable, coffin-shaped palette. Bring out the best in your eyes with a neutral base, and then use the contour, define, and highlight shades to create your ideal eye shape. Each quad includes an easy-to-follow how-to insert, illustrated by Kat Von D, so you can lift, define, widen, and narrow eyes with color.  It is formulated without parabens, sulfates, and pthalates.

My Experience with Kat Von D Shade + Light Eye Contour Quad – Sage:

Packaging:  Kat Von D’s packaging is always so cool and edgy just like her. These eyeshadows come in plastic coffin-shaped box. The box does close securely, but it feels kind of flimsy and very lightweight. It has a decent-sized mirror inside which I like.

Texture and Feel:  I was surprised to see how incredibly dusty some of the shadows in this quad were. The quality feels different, slightly inferior to the original shade + eye palette, which I am not too happy about. Though I didn’t experience a whole lot of fall out when I went to apply these shades. The eyeshadows are quite smooth and velvety to touch, my only issue with them is that they kick up a whole lot of powder when you dip your brush in.

This particular quad was not as dry feeling on my lids compared to the “Rust” version.  I am able to build up the shadows to good opaque intensity without it making my lid look dry and chalky.

Pigmentation and Shade:
Base: This is a warm peachy yellow shade. I find this shade to be quite useful and versatile. This shade pairs very well with the green shadow next to it. I love using this not only as an all-over lid shade to set a primer; it is also great to blend out in the crease. This shade is also great if you were to create a neutral soft eye, just put it all over the lid with soft warm brown in the crease and you have such an easy everyday eye look. This particular shade was also very dusty and kicked up a lot of powder.

Define: A gorgeous forest green shade. This “Sage” variant is designed for brown eyes and it indeed makes my brown eyes pop. I love this shade of green; it has great pigmentation and was easy to layer up to full opacity. I did find it a bit difficult to blend out and diffuse in the crease as the more I would blend the patchier and uneven it looks. This particular shade was not as dusty as the other but I did find that this particular eyeshadow creased quite easily on me.

Contour: This is a grey-olive color. I find this color very unique. This shade also complements all the other colors in the palette. Pigmentation was good and I use it to blend out the crease or as a transition color. This particular shade was also a bit dusty.

Highlight: It’s a nice creamy beige highlight. This shade was the most chalkiest and dry feeling of the bunch. It has decent pigmentation but had to be built up to pop.

Staying Power:  The shadows wore well for about 6-7 hours without fading with a primer, but I did see some major creasing with the dark green shadow.

Overall, I had high expectations from these eyeshadows having been impressed with the Orignal Shade + Light quad, but I was left a bit unimpressed. I wouldn’t call these bad eyeshadows as they do work well, have good pigmentation with smooth velvety texture, and also the colors are so well coordinated that creating an eye look is a no-brainer, hence even great for beginners. But they were a bit too powdery and difficult to work with for my liking. So, for me, these are not the best, but definitely not the worst; falling somewhere in the middle.  You can work with them if you put in some effort and this set of colors indeed looks so gorgeous on brown eyes.

In the EOTD, I have used “base” all over to set primer first, then used “Define” all over the lid, “Contour” in the crease and “Base” as a transition shade. I have applied “Highlight” over the brow bone and the inner corner.

Pros of Kat Von D Shade + Light Eye Contour Quad – Sage:

  • Gorgeous set of shades, perfect for making my brown eyes pop.
  • Good pigmentation.
  • Minimal fallout when application (provided you tap off the excess from the brush first).
  • Well-coordinated color makes creating eye look very easy.

Cons of Kat Von D Shade + Light Eye Contour Quad – Sage:

  • Slightly cheap feeling packaging.
  • Some shades are very dusty and powdery, and kick a whole lot of powder when you dip your brush in.
  • I saw major creasing with the darker shade in this palette.
  • Some shades were difficult to blend. They started looking patchy and uneven when blended though they work great when you layer them.

  1. Love the eye look Neha! But pretty bummed about the quality of these mini ones – was really hoping to get one of these but I guess I will pass. Thanks!
