Avoid These Ingredients in Makeup Products

In the current scenario, all of us become extra cautious about staying away from harmful chemicals that easily make their way through food, but we tend to ignore potentially harmful chemicals in makeup products that we apply on our skin, eyes, and lips! We all keep asking each other to stay away from chemicals, but we are never too sure about which particular chemicals to stay away from. Since makeup is indispensable for most of us, we are listing down some of the harmful chemicals that you must stay away from when it comes to makeup products.

1. Synthetic Colors:

Commonly Found in: Almost every makeup item!

Did you know these colors are made with coal tar and petroleum? These synthetic colors are very harmful and can cause skin irritation and diseases like ADHD. These colors are used in products that are supposed to make us pretty, but these colors and such products need to be avoided at all cost. You can find these in hair dyes too. If any of your cosmetics has a label called FD&C or D&C, stay away from them for they may cause cancer too.

2. Parabens

Commonly Found in: Almost every makeup item unless they state so!

Aren’t we all aware of parabens, already? These are the preservatives that prevent the growth of bacteria, yeast and mold in cosmetics. But, parabens apparently possess estrogens that may, in the long run, increase the risk of breast cancer. Parabens are often used in everything from toothpaste to face wash to all sorts of makeup products.

3. Chemicals in Sunscreen

Dermatologists cannot emphasize enough on the importance of sunscreens. Sunscreens typically act to prevent the absorption of UV rays by our skin, but it has become truly impossible to claim which one is the best for you. Since not all formulas are created equal, it’s better to do a patch test. Seriously, when it comes to sunscreens, you cannot really judge the ingredients by just looking at the list. How good or bad a sunscreen is for you depends on the fact that how the amalgamation of all the ingredients reacts on your skin. Still it is best to avoid Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Retinyl Palmitate, Homosalate and, of course, parabens.

4. Artificial Fragrance:

Commonly found in: Almost every skincare and makeup product!

The term ‘fragrance’ or ‘perfume’ is usually listed as a compilation of many chemicals on the ingredient list. In the cosmetic industry, over 3000 chemicals are present that can be used to create fragrances in cosmetics. Fragrance these days are widely added to skin care products so that they appeal masses but these fragrances are really harmful for your body. Each time you apply a fragranced product, you develop chances of getting skin irritation, runny eyes and other common
allergies.

5. Formaldehyde

Most commonly found in: Nail polishes, eyelash glue, hair gel, deodorants, soap, etc.

This is a colorless and flammable gas that’s being used in cosmetics widely these days. It’s also often used in the production of fertilizer, paper, and plywood, as well as used as a preservative in antiseptics and medicine, among other products. These days, it is widely being used in skin care products and makeup too. From hair loss to skin allergies to cancer – this widely used chemical can cause hamper your health and beauty both.

6. Triclosan:

Commonly found in: Foundations.

Triclosan can be absorbed easily by your skin, nose and mouth, although in a small amounts. It is typically used in toothpaste and soaps, and can affect pregnant women and children a lot. This particular chemical can easily lead to Endocrine disruption. Stay away from it too.

7. Talc:

Commonly Found in makeup powders.

Talc gives powder products a silky and smooth texture and also as a filler in blushes and foundations. It absorbs oil and reduces greasiness on the skin. Talc is thought to cause respiratory trouble and breathing problems in certain people.

8. Mineral Oil:

Commonly used in: Lipsticks, eyeshadows, etc. This oil helps to lock moisture and prevent skin from going dry. However, it also clogs pores because it is obtained from refining petroleum.

9. Lead:

Commonly found in lipsticks. Lead is banned in many countries for use in cosmetic products because it can alter enzymes inside the body. It also disrupts the normal functioning of brain and its signalling system. If you need to totally avoid one ingredient, it should be lead.
