The winter is soon approaching and the climate is something our skin loathes, as it brings along a lot of skin issues like dry, chapped and under-nourished skin. So, here I have a list of few simple steps you need to follow to make sure your skin is taken good care of. All the steps I am going to list down are quite effortless, so you don’t have to go out of the way to do anything for your skin. So let’s get started.
1. Opt for the Right Cleanser:
Cleansers or face washes can really dry out the skin, due to the harsh chemicals in them, hence you need change to a cleanser that contains more moisturizing ingredients in it. Try choosing something that does not contain glycolic or salicylic acid as major ingredients.
2. Moisturize Moisturize Moisturize!!:
Try not to have a gap of more than 30 seconds after you cleanse your skin. It is not just important to moisturize, but moisturizing right after you wash as well. Applying moisture to damp skin, helps seal that dampness into the skin. Choose a moisturizer that contains natural, nourishing ingredients. Go for an oil-based rather than a water-based one, as it can help your skin retain moisture in the winter season.
3. Avoid Hot Water:
It definitely feels great to take a hot water shower in the winters but try and stay away from hot water at least, especially for the facial skin in the winters. Try washing your face with lukewarm to normal water to avoid stripping out the natural oils off your skin.
4. Moisturize at Night:
While it is definitely important to stay moisturized during the day time, to avoid an unpleasant scene of your skin, it can be way more beneficial, if you let your skin rest in the warmth of overnight moisture. So, pamper those dry areas like hands, feet, elbows, and knees. Apply a generous layer of any moisturizing lotion or cream and help this moisture retain better until morning by wearing cotton gloves and socks.
5. An extra layer of Protection:
Add an extra layer of protection to your skin by wearing gloves and scarves to protect skin from cold breeze.
It is a common myth that winters being the cold season, do not bring in the need for a sunscreen, which is totally not true. Winter is actually as damaging as summer sun or even more actually, so apply a safe option like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to any exposed areas before you step out.
Get rid of the dead cells in the winter. The moisture can’t get in, if the dead cells form a strong layer over the skin, no matter how much product you slather on. Find an exfoliating mask and use it on your face and your hands, as well as gently on your lips, then follow immediately with moisture to lock the moisture in.
8. Homemade Packs:
Using cleverly and carefully chosen ingredients in your face packs made at home, can help you take care of the moisture needs of your skin in the winter months. Use moisturizing ingredients like olive or almond oil, avocado, yogurt, honey, bananas, and aloe vera.
9. Hydrate on the Inside:
Try consuming foods that are high in water content, to keep your skin hydrated from the inside. Try fruits and veggies rich in water content. Also, consume foods rich in vitamin C and zinc to support the healthy production of collagen and elastin. Also consider an omega-3 supplement, or consume more fatty fish and flaxseed to give your skin the building blocks it needs to appear supple and smooth.
10. Drink Water:
Winters can make you feel less thirsty, due to the cold climate but you will still need to supply adequate amount of water to your body and keep it well hydrated on the inside. So force yourself to drink as much water as you can, to keep your skin healthy and moisturized naturally.
So, don’t you think these are just the simplest things you could do to take care of your skin in the cold and dry winters? All the steps are more or less a part of our daily routine and do not demand much to be incorporated in our daily life. So gear up, take care of your skin ladies!
