7 Tips To Prep Your Skin for Foundation

Hi ladies,

A perfectly applied foundation is everything and I literally mean this. We all know how heart-breaking it is to see that cakey, patchy and oxidized look on our face after we apply our base makeup. Despite all the efforts, it happens with us most of the times. It is due to the few initial mistakes we do while prepping the skin for makeup. Today’s article has some tips which you will find helpful in getting that flawless base every time.

foundation basics

1. The compulsory CTM routine

None of the expensive foundations would work if your face is not properly cleansed, toned and moisturized. You must never start with an unclean face because that way your skin wouldn’t hold the makeup for even an hour. Toning might be optional for some but it a must if your skin’s pH balance is not right at the moment. Without moisturizing, you are calling all the troubles on your face. If you don’t want extra dry flaky face or the “oil-factory look”, moisturize with a nice product meant for your skin type.

2. No rubbing

face washing

If you rub your face harshly while cleansing and moisturizing, this will not let you have a perfectly prepped skin for foundation. Rubbing harshly irritates skin and sometimes makes it bumpy in a matter of seconds. Also, if your skin is dry, rubbing accentuates flakiness.

3. Treat thy zits

Even if any zit is about to pop, let it happen on its own. Don’t squish it to have a flat surface because it will leave a permanent acne scar. Rather apply salicylic acid or any other prescribed spot treatment to tone it down. If you have acne prone skin, apply moisturizer which calms your redness and bumpiness. Rose water ice cubes also help for this purpose and they also tighten up your pores.

4. Prime well

Using a primer helps your foundation is so many ways. It makes foundation stay longer, look smoother and also keeps oil at bay. Primers can be used in combination like on areas with pores use a pore-filling primer and on dry areas use a hydrating primer.

5. Colour correct

color correcting

Colour correcting can make a whole lot of difference on how your foundation looks on your face. That redness, dark circles and dull areas need to be corrected with green, peachy/orange and yellow correctors respectively. Choose right consistency and while color correcting remember less is more.

6. Wait after every step

You need to wait at least 5 minutes after every step; right from cleansing to color correcting. Let your skin soak up everything and then see how well your foundation blends in your skin. That “made-up look” is mostly a result of haste while piling on products one after the other.

7. Eye makeup first

If you are going to work with darker pigments, it is better to do eyes first and base later because they might fall on your cheeks and mess up all that hard-work. You can use sticky notes, tapes, and place lots of loose powder under your eyes to keep the mess off your face but it is better to the foundation after eye makeup. Most of us tend to rest our hand on your face while drawing eye liner, so that way too, your foundation might get messed up a bit. Do the base after eyes for your perfect foundation look.
