How I Treated My PCOS and Hormonal Acne with Spearmint Tea

One in every 10 women in India suffers from PCOS. I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2008. The usual symptoms – acne, hirsutism, missed periods etc. But, I was not overweight, which is perhaps the most common symptom. I was put on a lot of allopathic medicines – metformin, estradiol tablets etc. The hormones artificially induce bleeding every 21st day. I had had enough! I switched to homeopathy. Homeopathy was good. It cured the underlying causes instead of the symptoms. Over a year, I slowly started getting regular periods and my condition improved. I took an ultrasound scan to confirm that PCOS had gone. Yay! But, then in 2011 I started missing my cycles. I took a scan to find that it was PCOS again. Sigh!

I did my bit of research to discover the horrid fact that PCOS can be treated, but not completely cured. So, did that mean I had to keep popping pills for the rest of my life? I was very dispirited. I started searching all online forums and sites created to help women with PCOS. I was on the lookout for natural remedies because I did not want to continue relying on medicines. I came across many options – fenugreek, saw palmetto, chaste tree, milk thistle, licorice etc. I dug deep into each one of them. Most of them had side effects like putting on weight, external estrogen etc.

The safest of them all was Spearmint– it is dried mint leaves, after all! (Not to be confused with pudina which is peppermint). Spearmint is produced in India and so I thought “Nice, easily available!”. But no – there were no spearmint tea sellers in India. How very sad! I had to get tea imported from some country which imports tea from India. Oh, the irony!

I ordered my tea bags from UK.  There are other brands, but they offer a blend of spearmint with green tea or jasmine tea. This is 100% dried spearmint leaves. It is also caffeine free.  There is also another brand which offers 100% spearmint. I am going to try this the next time. If you can grow spearmint in your garden, that would be the best thing.

My Drinking Pattern:

1. I dip a tea bag in a cup of water that has a temperature of about 80 degree Celsius.

2. Everywhere it is asked to steep tea bags for about 5 minutes (that is only so that it doesn’t become too strong and unbearable to drink), but I keep mine for an hour or so that all the goodness is extracted. It tastes very minty, that’s all.

3. I repeat this twice a day after breakfast and lunch.

What Spearmint Tea Does:

Spearmint tea basically helps by controlling following hormones:

• Free Testosterone, the hormone responsible for acne and hirsutism is reduced by about 30%.

• Luteinising Hormone (LH), the hormone responsible for triggering ovulation when it surges mid-cycle is increased by around 30%.

• Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), the hormone responsible for the proper maturation of ovarian follicles was increased by around 15%.

Results:

About 2-3 months after I started taking this tea:

  • I got my periods which had stopped completely prior to this. From then on, I have menstruated every month. I take no other medicines or supplements other than this.
  • As an added benefit, my acne too has cleared up so much! I can actually notice a difference if I stop taking the tea (I once had to, because the shipping was delayed).

I have been drinking spearmint tea for over an year now. This is one of the best things to have happened to a woman like me, who suffers from PCOS!

  1. I suffer from PCOD and this post is so useful for me Anjana 🙂 I want to try spearmint tea as soon as possible. but i wanna grow my own spearmint, how should i go about it? I had not put on weight before pregnancy, I weighed not more than 60, but it’s after pregnancy, that I bloated up 😛

    1. Even I have PCOS and I hate it! I weight around 53 kgs and I went to a very reputed Endo and he put me on an OCP and it made me gain so much weight and I still have not been able to lose it! I too wanna try this tea, and have searched for it everywhere, but just can’t seem to find it. It would be great if you could do a post on how to grow it at home. 🙂

    2. I haven’t tried growing it yet. I always buy and stock cartons of tea bags. If you can find spearmint seeds, then that’s a better option than buying tea bags.

      1. @Anjana… Hi first of thanks a loooot for sharing such personal experience gonna b helpful and informative for many. Thanks alot.. It’s commendable. I m sailing in same boat vd pcos…. Frm mny years back. Having regular periods frm begging and now skin is improving enough vd time but facial hairs r there and hair thinning too. But Pcos has drastically effected my ovarian health…… Egg formation nd thn ovulation, al hv gt disturbed. Need some help for that…… Plz.
Plz suggest which spearmint tea brand to order?????

    3. Hi, Jomol you can find spearmint seeds available on line… in less than 150 INR… Or if you want its tea in India you can find it at Indiamart.com. 🙂

      1. Hi Sheetal,

I tried Indiamart.com for spearmint seeds but could not find anything relevant.. do mind sharing the link.
Also have u used it urself and find it beneficial ? I have PCOS and I am overweight but I have tried reducing it but no help.. I have facial hair and have regular periods but don’t have proper flow..

        Any advice would be helpful..

        Thanks in Advance..!!

        1. If you do not have proper flow, you should see the doctor before attempting any self-medication. You can ask your doctor whether you want to be treated with medicines or with alternate therapy.
I was diagnosed with PCOS and my doctor told me it’s tougher treating PCOS in people who are skinny. In overweight people, most people are told to lose weight and they find great relief. You mentioned you are overweight. Did you try gym and a proper diet together? For how long? If you fell you didn’t put in enough effort in losing weight, you really should try again!

  2. such a refreshing and informative post Anjana! super thankful to u!
I am fortunate to not have this issue and have a baby very early in life but this would help a lot of my frends

  3. I haven’t tried growing it yet. I always buy and stock cartons of tea bags. If you can find spearmint seeds, then that’s a better option than buying tea bags.

  4. Super informative post Anjana, though I am not overweight but facing all other symptoms and hence making frequent trips to doctors. 🙁
I am gonna try this for sure. Nothing better than a sure shot home remedy. 🙂
Thanks a lot for the article 😀

I am suffering from PCOS from the last 7 years I am 21 year old.. 🙁 I am on homoeopathy treatment but as soon as I stopped taking pills I missed my period… I never understood why it happened with me I am just 38 kg so may be underweight. From the last 3 month I’ve not got my periods in spite of pills… Doctor is saying keep taking pills but I am now buck up .. It’s been 7 years and I am still suffering from PCOS… Please Can I know the cost of it and link of the respected websites…. Hope to get revert soon.. 🙂

  7. Nice post anjana. I understood that spearmint is dried mint. But do you recommend juicing out fresh mint leaves strained, mixed with hot water?

    1. Janani, I have mentioned that fresh leaves are definitely better than tea bags. Boil the leaves in hot water and consume it. But make sure they are spearmint leaves and not peppermint(pudina) leaves since spearmint leaves aren’t easily available in the market.

  14. Hi Anjana,

Thanks for the post. Is it recommended to have spearmint tea every day?. For people who want to become pregnant what is the best period to have this. I have searched all around and found during ovulation period but do we have any specific days like after 15 days of menstruation or so?

  15. Thank you for your article!!! I am so glad that the spearmint tea worked for you. My daughter has PCOS and I did not want to give her medicine that probably would not agree with the other problems she has. I know they would want her to take pills for the rest of her life with harsh side effects while they get rich. I knew there was a natural option out there. I am so glad that a tea may do the trick. Natural tea is so much better for you anyway. Thanks for taking the time to write this. I hope this helps her. This has been a problem for over a year now. Thanks again!
    Chritine

  16. Hye anjanna, me too have PCOS. I have lots of hair all over my body. I just want to ask, does drinking spearmint tea help reducing your hirsutism problem? Hope I get respond from you 🙂

  17. Hi Ladies,
After reading so many comments that people are willing to try it to treat PCOS, i am just curious did anyone actually start it? Its almost an year since this article was posted.
Has anyone cured there PCOS and got pregnant?
I have PCOS since 15 years and ttc now, so trying every possible treatment.

  18. Hiii, I’m suffering from PCOD since the last 4 yrs & extreme hirsutism..its the worst phase..I’m totally fed up of this! I’ve heard abt Spearmint tea before but wasn’t sure..thnx for the info..
BTW, I had a query..can u plzzz share the site from which u ordered & also I wanted to ask whtr I have to take these for the whole of my life??

  19. I am 27 and pretty sure i’ve been suffering from pcos for the last 4years. Before i turned 23 i was pretty good at eating right. no fast food, sugar, dairy, etc. After 23 i started college and i work 40+ hours a week. I started living on iced coffees, fast food, sugar, caffeine, and just bad food all around. plus i hardly get exercise since i work 3rd shift and go to school during the day. so basically i’ve gained 50 pounds, have acne on cheeks and jawline, and an overgrowth of facial hair and body hair. What i’m confused by is that alot of people dont address the issue that what we eat effects are hormones. dairy has added hormones in it as well as alot of meat and like mentioned on other sites, insulin effects your hormones. So sugar, carbs, processed stuff raises the insulin and in so doing triggers all these hormonal imbalances and problems. I am going to try this spearmint tea as well as peppermint since i hear that works as the same remedy.

  20. Hey can you mention the brand of spearmint tea that you bought.
Since the ones i am getting online are all mixed with other herbs, it would be great if you mention the link as well.
