I don’t know if its the golden packaging or the hype around the products, but I want to pick more YSL stuff. This month, at the YSL counter, I was confused between YSL’s Perfect Touch Radiant Brush Foundation and this exfoliator. The former comes with a detachable brush applicator and I thought it was quite unique, but this exfoliator looked equally promising with golden gel. Eventually, I zeroed in on the exfoliator with the promise made to the SA that I would pick the brush foundation on my next trip 😛 Let’s find out more about this exfoliator for now!

My Take on YSL Top Secrets Granule Free Natural Action Exfoliator:
You know how much I love exfoliators – my favorite ones till date are MAC’s Volcanic Ash Exfoliator, Clinique Exfoliating Scrub, and Lotus Herbals Pomegranate and Plum Energizing Skin Polisher. All the three products that I have mentioned above are granular in texture – the MAC one has volcanic ash with sugar, Lotus has pomegranate seed granules, and Clinique one has a gritty and grainy kind of texture. So, you see, I need to “feel” the exfoliation process. I am not a fan of mild scrubs though I know harsh exfoliation can be harmful for acne-prone, sensitive and oily skin. Exfoliation is a necessary step to achieve flawless skin. Regular exfoliation aids in sloughing off dead cells from your skin that make your face appear dull. A good exfoliation reveals healthy and smooth skin. When I read the description about this YSL exfoliator, I saw that this was granule free and claimed to be good for even sensitive skin, that’s when I got intrigued. The SA also told me that many models use this exfoliator to keep their skin flawless, I obviously didn’t buy that 😛
Talking about the fragrance – it’s a nice perfumed scent which lingers throughout the exfoliation process. I am not against perfume in skin care products, in fact, I am of the opinion that pleasantly perfumed skin care products have a “feel good” factor when you use them, what do you think?
Coming to the packaging, it’s all golden – typical YSL packaging. This exfoliator comes in a tube packaging and is a honey-colored thick gel with lots of golden particles. I really wondered how this exfoliator was going to work and whether this whole “gel texture adhering to the epidermis” was just a gimmick because it was all gel and not a bit gritty. I proceeded to apply it on thoroughly dry skin and upon contact with the skin, the golden gel spread easily on the face, and formed an oily layer. You need to massage this oily layer on the face for a few minutes. The oily layer is not sticky and you can move it freely over the skin. There’s not much that you feel – it’s just like applying any lightweight oil on your face. But once you massage it more with a bit of water, the oily layer turns into a milky emulsion, which washes off very easily leaving no greasy layer on the skin – just clean, visibly bright, and touchably soft and smooth skin.
Massaging is very important here – first massage on dry skin then follow it up for a few more minutes with a bit of water. The effect is similar to what you would feel after a good cleanup minus the stretchy and “sucked out” feel. The best thing is that in the absence of abrasive granules, it exfoliates the skin well without stripping off the natural oils from the skin making it radiant. For hardcore scrub lovers, who like well-rounded granules and gritty particles in their scrub, this product will be a disappointment. I like my scrubs to be a bit coarse and granular, and for me, this exfoliator does not match up to MAC’s Volcanic Ash Exfoliator or Clinique’s Exfoliator. Though I still see and feel soft, supple, and smooth skin after using YSL exfoliator, that “something” I get with physical exfoliators is missing.
Also, just a bit is required (the amount shown in the picture is what I require for one-time use). This way, it would last me for over two months easily.
I should mention that this exfoliator is great for people with sensitive and acne-prone skin types because there are no harsh granules that would cause redness or inflammation or dry out the skin. Just massage in the golden gel and see it turn from an oily consistency to a milky emulsion and rinse off to nicely exfoliated skin.
Frankly, I think it’s a bit overpriced the average effect it shows and then there are no great ingredients either, except for Chlorantha Bark Extract which regulates sebaceous glands and scavenges free radicals.
Also, this exfoliator is not at all effective in removing whiteheads or blackheads.
I would not recommend this exfoliator to you if you are okay with granules in your exfoliators. It’s just an average exfoliator, nothing great to spend Rs. 2250 on!
