“My sun sets to rise again.” – Robert Browning
No matter which part of the world you live in, what type of climate and which season of the year, you always need to wear sunscreen. Yes, maybe the SPF factor will be different, but we cannot and should not do without, as the sun is one of the main reasons that causes premature skin ageing. You know as kids we’ve always been told to go play in the sun for that much required vitamin D. As much as we love those bright sunny days, the harsh sun rays (ultra violet) actually gradually attacks the skin’s elastin causing skin aging; even before we age. So, someone at the age of 30 could have the skin of a 40 year old or vice versa, if they have protected their skin well.
Skin cancer can occur too if the skin gets prolonged sun damage. Also, many of us (including me) often forget to wear sunscreen when it’s cloudy or in winters thinking that the sun’s not at its harshest, so why bother. But, that’s sacrilege as the harmful sunrays are always in attack mode, even when we don’t know it.
Having said that, we all know there are dozens of sunscreens/sunblock’s in the market that will prevent damage with sustained usage. A sunscreen should, without a doubt, be one of our HG’s of skincare. Anyways, we should choose a sunscreen based on our individual skin types and consider the SPF count too, depending on which part of the globe we are in. On that note let’s quickly evaluate the requirements of both dry and sensitive skin:
Now, dry skin is supposedly parched skin that demands moisture, lack of which makes it dry and often flaky and inflamed at times. Dry skin tends to feel tight especially post washing, or even throughout the day and at any time of the year. This happens because the skin loses too much water or natural oils. So, we need to ensure that when choosing a sunscreen for such skin, it must contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s) such as Lactic acid, Glycolic acid, Citric acid etc… to restore the damaged cells in our skin. Also, it should contain oils to replenish the lack of moisture. You will need to look out for super hydrating ingredients such as Aloe Vera and Glycerin for instance. Dry skinned people tend to wrinkle faster, so apt nourishing ingredients is key! Do avoid the spray forms as they mostly contain alcohol, which will dry you out further.
