ColourPop Succulent Ultra Matte Lip Review

Hey lovely ladies,

One last ColourPop lipstick review for you – you have already seen swatches of this gorgeous shade when I had reviewed Stila All Day Liquid Lipstick in Tesoro for you earlier. If you thought Stila Tesoro was bright, this one will make you get your shades out! It is the shade “Succulent” from ColourPop Ultra Matte liquid Lipstick range. Let’s see if this worked for me or not.

Product Description:
ColourPop was born, raised and made with love in the City of Angels (aka Los Angeles) so we can react quickly to the latest and greatest trends and get them in your fabulous hands stat. We take the phrase “if you can dream it, you can do it” to a whole new level and specialize in making killer makeup in every shade imaginable at prices everyone can afford. We think that whole barrier between fancy and affordable is absolute nonsense. That’s why all of our products have luxury formulas at prices that won’t break the bank. Have an idea for a great shade? Shoot us an email. We love feedback from our customers. We find inspiration everywhere from the catwalk to YouTube and can turn what’s trending now into a shade tomorrow. PS. We are 100% fur baby friendly, bunny approved, and only test our products on humans – the ones in our HQ to be exact. We Never Test on Animals, Made in the City of Angels.
US $6

Colourpop does have International shipping option (including India). They charge about $25. Once in a blue moon, they do offer free shipping internationally – you can sign up for their social media page and keep track of it that way. However, please note that International parcels can attract customs charges – which can vary from 30-43%. Alternatively, you can buy the product from Instagram sellers as well. Either ways, by the time you get it in India – its not gonna cost you $6.

Lip gloss kind of packaging – with silver detailing. The shade name is written at the bottom but since the tube is transparent, its fairly easy to make out what colour it is. Unless you have them in a plethora of shades. It comes packaged in the standard Colourpop white outer box. The applicator is a doe foot applicator – refer pics. Makes for easy and precise application.

My Experience with ColourPop Succulent Ultra Matte Lip:

Color: The shade “Succulent” is a bright orange red – even brighter than Stila Tesoro. It’s the kind of shade which catches instant attention and draws you in – assuming you like bright shades. As far as the shade goes – it would look bright and pretty on any complexion – as long as you are comfortable sporting vibrant hues. If not, steer clear. I have started appreciating neutral shades and dusky pinks and peaches, but I still find comfort in such bright shades, especially when you are in a hurry because the #theMandlaBoys are standing on your head eyeing the clock every 2 minutes. You basically have to apply this and your makeup is done! You don’t need to spend hours on eyeshadows. You can thrown in a black liner/kohl and some bronzer, and you are done!

Texture:  This is the reason I was not reviewing this product since ages. This is officially “the worst” liquid lipstick in my kitty! Clarification – I still love Colourpop lipsticks, but this shade here officially wins the award for the worst lipstick ever! The texture is fairly liquid and seems to apply evenly. However, as it starts to settle and become matte – it starts to get really dry, patchy and the colour starts to settle into the lip lines. I can elaborate on how bad this looks and feel – but as they say – a picture is worth a 1000 words. One look at the lip swatch, you will understand all that is wrong with this one.

So, it kind of starts from a really bad position. If that wasn’t bad enough, it actually gets worse. Just like the Hindi movie Bodyguard – bad to start with and then when you think it has reached rock bottom, a whole new level of low appears!!! Don’t get me started on that one! Back to the lipstick, it’s fairly drying on the lips and looks very very patchy. As time goes on, it starts coming off from the inner portion of the lip. There is no residual stain. So the portions which come off look even more horrendous especially because it’s such a bright shade. All in all – it’s an absolute no go. The only way you can make this work a little – by using a lip liner underneath to give an appearance of evenness. However, it still won’t help too much with the way it wears.

Pigmentation: I don’t know how to put this – the pigmentation is good but if the application is patchy and the pigment collects into the fine lines, it becomes counter productive. Having good pigmentation with this quality does not help.

Lasting Power:  I feel it’s moot to talk about the lasting power because you obviously you wouldn’t want something like this to go on your lips – let alone stay there – in all its patchy glory. Anyway, it gives about 4 hours wear, post which it starts breaking off from the inner portion of your lips. Eating/drinking will expedite the wear down process. And as is the case with liquid lipsticks – oil in food will start breaking it more quickly. Also, as with most lip colours, eating/drinking will effect the non-transference capability of the lipstick.

Pros of ColourPop Succulent Ultra Matte Lip:

  • A stunningly bright shade.
  • Lightweight texture.
  • Decent pigmentation.
  • Easy to apply with the applicator.
  • Decent packaging.
  • Easy to identify colour from the tube itself.
  • Fairly transferproof.
  • Not tested on animals.
  • Fairly quick dry time.
  • Colourpop ships Internationally now.
  • No taste or fragrance.

Cons of ColourPop Succulent Ultra Matte Lip:

  • Fairly drying post application for the first couple of hours of wear.
  • Applies patchy.
  • Gets more patchy with wear.
  • Pigment sinks into fine lines.
  • Wear time of about 4 hours or so.

IMBB Rating:
A 1/5 product.

I can’t remember when I gave a product this dismal rating! But this officially is the worst lipstick in my kit! Colour pop has a gorgeous array of shades to chose from, please steer clear of this one.

Do I Recommend ColourPop Succulent Ultra Matte Lip?
Seriously? I need to answer this? Well, if you like patchy, uneven lipstick – go for it! Maybe for Halloween! Because it scared the hell out of me when I looked into the mirror a minute after applying this.

  1. KK although it looks worst I must say the color compliments you totally..had the cons not been there I guess it would have looked super actually is that kind of shade where only this one product could suffice the makeup need for the time..need to find this kinda shade someplace else..let us know from your large stash of loveables if there is anything that goes close to this color 🙂

    1. I know, had the texture been good, this is such a lovely shade. Just perks up the face instantly. I’ll have a look in my stash and let you know if i have a dupe for this.

    1. You will not believe it Jomol! Mr Mandla will come and mention that its time to leave. Ill say – i’ll take 2 minutes more. After that every 5 minutes one of the little Mandla boys will come and say – Papa is saying lets go! 🙁

  2. I also had this one but it looked too bold on me and then I gifted it to my sis. 😀 She now uses it just for Insta pics. I do not like how Colourpop formula keeps fluctuating. I like ultra satin range better.

PS: #theMandlaBoys Chronicles always make me go ROFL! 😛

    1. I think if you layer it with lip pencil and just wanna take pics – its workable. But not if you want to step out wearing this! Ya – there isn’t consistency in the Colourpop formula. You can’t just pick a shade coz you like it. You have to check how it performs.

#theMandlaBoys sure know how to entertain! 😉
