ColourPop Clueless Ultra Matte Lip Review

Hey lovely ladies,

Back with another lipstick review – yes, still a liquid lipstick! Yes, a lot more reviews still on their way! Yes, I’m addicted! Yes, I need intervention or a psychiatrist! 😛 Moving on…Today’s pick is from the Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip range. If you have been reading my lipstick reviews and have seen the reviews of “Bad Habit,” “Lumiere2,”
“StingRaye” and “Scrooge” – you would know two things – one, the Colourpop Ultra Matte formula can be inconsistent; and two, I actually like the formula – at least most of the time. So, let’s see how “Clueless” worked for me – or not…

Price:
US $6. Colourpop does have International shipping option (including India). They charge about $25. Once in a blue moon, they do offer free shipping internationally – you can sign up for their social media page and keep track of it that way. However, please note that International parcels can attract customs charges – which can vary from 30-43%. Alternatively, you can buy the product from Instagram sellers as well. Either ways, by the time you get it in India – it’s not gonna cost you $6.

Packaging:
A lip gloss kind of packaging, with silver detailing. The shade name is written at the bottom but since the tube is transparent, it’s fairly easy to make out what colour it is. Unless you have them in a plethora of shade, it comes packaged in the standard Colourpop white outer box. The applicator is a doe-foot applicator – refer pics, makes for easy and precise application.

My Experience with ColourPop Clueless Ultra Matte Lip:

Color: The shade “Clueless”, is described as “dusty mauve pink.” To me, it looks more mauve pink – not too dusty. I’d say Lumiere2 was more of a dusty mauve than this. I was hesitant picking up this shade because it seemed a tad bit too light and maybe something which would suit Caucasian skin tones better, but I did want to pick a couple of light n*de pinks and I thought ColourPop was still a more reasonable price point for experimentation. In most of the pictures online, it seemed quite light, bordering on pastel pink, but I still took the plunge, maybe it was the shade name which caught my attention… I used to enjoy the movie with this name “Clueless”! It was kind of cute, till Sonam went ahead and made a remake of it and totally spoilt it for me! 🙁

Anyway, back to the lipstick, I am happy to report that the shade isn’t too pastel and works okay for our medium skin tone too. I think it looks a tad bit pastel when you initially apply it; however, as with other Colourpop shades, the colour deepens a bit post applictaion. So, it loses its “pastel-ness” and becomes a gorgeous mauve pink. However, do note that it is a tad bit cool toned, so go for it only if you are comfortable with cool toned shades on your face.

Texture:  This lipstick shade is from the initial launch from Colourpop – so it is with the old formula, which means, it’s a pain! So, I got this lipstick a couple of months back and was super excited to expand my Colourpop range while experimenting with lighter shades. Till that time, my experience was kind of limited to KVD, New Colourpop formula, Huda Beauty. So, when I tried this, I was ready to cry within 15 minutes of application! It was so drying. When you apply, it’s fairly thin and liquid, but once it sets, you feel the stretch. This made me understand why a set of people hate Colourpop because they are the ones who tried the initial formula. However, as the day went on – something weird happened. The formula actually felt more comfortable with wear. No, the comfort wasn’t because the lipstick started wearing off or breaking down. The lipstick was still intact, but by about 4-hour mark, I was actually okay with the formula. Strange? Yup! Very! Anyway, I forgot all of it and put this aside because there were newest players in the market – like Stila, Kylie, etc. However, if you would have read my review on Stila Tesoro and Kylie Spice, you would now know how drying those formulas were. So, when I came back to testing this Colourpop lipstick again, I realised one thing – I did not find the formula as drying. No! It’s not that the formula isn’t drying, it’s just that the formula isn’t as drying as the others I had tried recently. You get that? So basically, it’s more comparative than absolute. Bottomline, formula is still drying, it feels tight post initial application. However, with wear, it gets comfortable – strange but true! I’ve never experienced than before. I actually kept retrying it just to ascertain whether it was a one-off thing because of something I had used a night before on my lips or it was the lipstick, it most definitely is the lipstick!

Pigmentation: Pigmentation is fairly good. Despite the colour initially looking pastel, it went on fairly evenly and covered the pigmentation well. So, what you see is what you get. The pigmentation of the wearer’s lips is not going to change the colour post application.

Lasting Power:  The product lasts about 7-8 hours through light snacks – that is if you can live through the initial round of dryness! The beauty of this shade is that despite being a light pink, it leaves quite a prominent pink stain. So much so that even when you take it off fully, your lips will be distinctly pink for a few more hours.

As is common with the long-wearing formulas – oil will break down the product – be it cleansing oil at the end of the day or the oil in your food. You can easily do a touch up – it will not look patchy. You do not need to remove the entire lipstick and reapply. Eating would cause the lipstick to wear down from the inner portion of your lips. However, since the stain is so distinct, even when it wears off the centre of your lips, it does not look bad.

Pros of ColourPop Clueless Ultra Matte Lip:

  • An interesting shade.
  • Lightweight texture.
  • Decent pigmentation.
  • Easy to apply with the applicator.
  • It applies smoothly and evenly.
  • Decent wear time – around 7-8 hours.
  • No feathering or bleeding.
  • Decent packaging.
  • Easy to identify colour from the tube itself.
  • Fairly transfer proof.
  • Does not flake.
  • Does not go patchy with wear time.
  • Does not make your lips look prunish.
  • Not tested on animals.
  • Colourpop ships Internationally now.
  • Leaves a stain behind.

Cons of ColourPop Clueless Ultra Matte Lip:

  • Slightly drying post application for the first couple of hours of wear.

IMBB Rating:
A 4/5 product.

Given an option, I would rather pick something from the newer Colourpop formula than the older one. I think the shade is pretty but may not work for darker skin tones, it would accentuate the coolness and paleness in the shade.

Do I Recommend ColourPop Clueless Ultra Matte Lip?
Honestly, I’m torn. I hate the initial drying but I do like that it gets comfortable subsequently and stays put. Though I am enjoying the shade, I don’t think it would be everyone’s cup of tea.
